  • Facebook and Instagram back up after global outage reports; WhatsApp still 'being buggy
UPDATE: Facebook tweeted at 8:06 p.m. EDT that the issue "has since been resolved and we should be back at 100% for everyone." Instagram also tweeted that it was back up. At 8:30 p.m. EDT, some WhatsApp users were still experiencing outages, according to reports on DownDetector.
If you're having issues with Facebook and Instagram on your smartphone, you're not alone.
Early Wednesday, people around the globe began reporting app issues, according to DownDetector, a web service that offers a real-time overview of bugs and outages online. About 8:45 a.m. EST, thousands of Instagram users began reporting that they were having problems.
The hashtags #InstagramDown, #FacebookDown and #WhatsApp have since started trending on Twitter, a result of widespread social conversation surrounding the service interruption.
A live outage map shows that users in the Northeast region of the U.S., as well as London and Berlin, are having issues with the photo-sharing app. Other hotspots include Florida, Georgia and parts of South America, according to DownDetector.
Instagram and Facebook both tweeted Wednesday afternoon that the companies are "working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible."
Facebook, which owns Instagram, began having problems as early as 8:04 a.m. EST. Since then, DownDetector reported over 7,600 outages across the entire eastern half of the U.S. and throughout Europe.

Facebook wasn't immediately reachable for comment.
In the comment sections on the DownDetector website, users sounded off about issues they were having with the apps.
Instagram user @Paerbaer asks, "Is Instagram story not working or is my internet just trash right now?" Instagram user Robin Grima writes, "Can’t upload to story, can’t send pictures in chats and can’t open photos sent. Most people’s icons are blank. Can’t see posts, they’re blank."
Instagrammer Hiroshi28 asks, "Are we surprised that Instagram keeps crashing and being buggy?"
Facebook users were having similar issues.
Facebook user Robert Currier says that "images and very slow here in West Central Florida," while Facebooker Tina Modugno simply says "images won't post."
WhatsApp was seeing similar outage patterns also, according to DownDetector.
MENLO PARK (CBS SF) - Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp users reported issues on all three services Wednesday morning that continued for hours before being mostly resolved in the late afternoon.
According to DownDetector.com, which tracks website issues, the problems started around 5 a.m. Pacific Time and appeared to impact users across the globe, particularly in the United States and in Europe.
Menlo Park-based Facebook, which owns all the impacted social media platforms, posted a message on competing social media platform Twitter about the issues.
“We’re aware that some people are having trouble uploading or sending images, videos and other files on our apps. We’re sorry for the trouble and are working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible,” Facebook tweeted.

While many users were still reporting problems, DownDetector.com indicted that the widespread impact of the issues for all three apps were drastically reduced by about 4 p.m. PST. Facebook users were reporting that uploaded images were visible again, though there were continued reports of messaging and image problems with Whatsapp and Instagram.
Hashtags and hashtag pages were still not functioning as of 5 p.m., according to posts by some users.
Instagram indicated on Twitter that the main problem was resolved at 4:45 p.m. PST.
