Thats an excellent shout on your sleeping bag! I did something similar wity my tent and it brought the size down dramatically
Hi Paul this video is brilliant I’m off to do it again on Friday trying to follow the guidance here to keep things simple.
Absolutely superb content. Really down to earth. Concise and practical. Hoping to do the Coast to Coast and this helps. Agree with you - I hate wet feet so lightweight w.proof boots for me.
Thanks for your comment. I'm actually thinking about trying trail runners on my next hike.
Awesome series from prep through to post trek review, really really great!! Thank you! Has given me some tips on equip I may need to change out, get, toss, etc before I go. I'm mostly concerned about how to keep my pack 20lbs or less plus have enough clothes to get through 2.5 weeks as I'm staying for additional travel after the WHW. I think if I can sort 2-3 changes of clothes at most, I can wear twice and wash and be set. Need to start bringing my pack on my training walks too. 5 weeks to go so I think plenty of time to get myself sorted!
Wow Paul many thanks for the great video what size is the drybag for your sleeping bag I've been struggling to fit my gear into a 68 litre rucksack these tips will make such a huge difference. Very much appreciated
Keep up the good work brother
Hi Paul, really enjoyed your video of whw trip. I did this trip in sept 07 & hope to do it again hopefully next year with my 14 yr son. Think my pack weighed around 12 kg but with help from yourself hope to lighten it to a much more manageable weight. Brought back really good memories of a fantastic walk & meeting like minded people. Blister prevention will be top of my list as I learnt the hard way back then. Keep up the well presented enjoyable vids, ATB Steve 👍
I'm glad you enjoyed my videos and yes make your pack weight as light as possible, it worked for me.
I'm starting the Coast to Coast tomorrow and I will start posting the videos when I get home.
Paul Willcocks good luck on the coast to coast adventure Paul hope you get the weather for it. Just recently found your channel& look FWD to the uploads of the trip. Have fun & enjoy that pint at robin hood's bay ... Cheers
WAS THE MAP ADEUATE
A nice series of videos and I enjoyed watching them. I always like to see what other long distance walkers/backpackers are carrying in their packs. :-)
snowy matrix thanks. I watched load of kit videos before I hiked the west highland way and found them very helpful. I'm always changing my kit to try and reduce the weight.
Yeah me too, I have a video showing what I carry but with no talking in it though (not brave enough!) My pack comes in at 22lbs base weight but I like to carry a little bit more kit than you. :-)
I've just watched your kit video and it looks like you have a lot of nice stuff. Don't worry too much about the weight of your pack, everybody has different ideas as to what you need and what you don't need to take. The main thing is to enjoy the hike.
Great series of videos. If you had to schedule the days and camps again is there any differences you would make ie in 5 or 6 days in total . If so where would you camp ?
Good question. my 2017 WHW hike took me 7 days and my 2020 WHW hike took me 5 days. If I was going to hike it again which I probably will one day I think I would go for 6 days as hiking the entire length of Loch Lomond in one day was hard going on my 2020 hike. As for where to camp it really is hard to say. There are lots of wild camp places along the Way.
I don’t believe I viewed you 2020 WHW Nike video, is it available on you channel page
@@scottrussell6326 no sorry. I filmed the hike but never got around to editing and uploading it.
Great set of videos. Congratulations and thank you for sharing. ATB Paul,
Thanks. I tried to make the type of videos with the information that would of helped me and hopefully help others.
just binged watched your west highland way videos, really well done , some really good info given, as im planning this walk next year , a real help. liked and subbed
one question now tho, for charging your power pack and phone u had a plug, where was you charging this? do camp sites up there have charging points?
Wandering Jay yes the campsite all have power sockets that you can use.
I have just bought a load of new kit, and was wondering. Did you take both the microfleece and the puffy jacket? I seen you packed the puffy, but not the fleece. Thanks in advance
Yes I did take both. I wore the fleece most days at some point, you can see me wearing it in most of my WHW videos.
Thanks Paul. A great series of videos, which has given me lots to think about.
Did you encounter many midges on your hike?
Do you think the condensation issue was specific to your tent or is likely to be the same with all tents?
I know you said that water was plentiful but did you need to use the filter at any point?
Sorry for all the questions 😮
I think the midge season starts at the end of May that's why I started my hike at the beginning of May. So I didn't see any midges at all. If I know its not going to rain in the night I always kept the tent outer door open (except for 1 night) to help ventilate the tent. This works if there is a breeze but when the air is still I always get condensation. I think all tent will get a level of condensation it just depends how well ventilated your tent is. And yes I did use my water filter, not as often as i thought I would need to but it was very handy on have. I would make sure I started each day fully hydrated and every time I stopped at a pub I would ask them to fill my water bottles for me so some days the filter wasn't used.
If you have any more questions just ask. I'm happy to help.
Great thanks for the clarification. Sounds like May 2018 should be my target. I look forward to watching your future videos.
Glad I could help.
Next weekend hopefully I will be wild camping on Dartmoor and in 3 weeks I will probably be starting my Coast to Coast hike. So there should be new videos posted soon.
I have tried to get the same dry bags that you use. I can get dry bags but not as flimsy as urs. (Flimsy may not be the best word, but you know what I mean). Where can I get them from? Thanks
I think this is where I got mine. ultralightoutdoorgear.co.uk/fold-drybag-ul/
What the the size dry bag for the sleeping bag did you use? Thanks
Sorry I can't remember, but I think it could be around 8 litres.
@@PaulWillcocks Thanks
Thanks Paul, which tent was this?

Hey Paul great vids. If you were to do it again would you wear trail running trainers. Sensible me says pack my boots incase but why carry the extra weight if the trails mostly are gravel and the trainers are waterproof.
That's an interesting question. When I hiked the Devon Coast to Coast I wore trail runners that weren't waterproof because I was 90% sure it wasn't going to rain, and it didn't. I did however walk through wet grass that soaked my feet and made my feet very uncomfortable. For that reason I think I would always want to keep my feet dry and trail runners even if they are waterproof will let water in around the top where as waterproof boots are more likely to keep rain out. I wouldn't take both trail runners and boots because of the weight so for me unless I was 100% sure it wasn't going to rain and that my feet were going to stay dry I would use waterproof boots (the lighter the better).

Paul Willcocks cheers Paul. I've watched a few videos now and it seems you were very blessed with the weather. Some even had 6 days of rain and mud for that reason def going for my light weight boots.
yes I was very lucky with the weather. Footwear choice is a personal think and for me I always want to keep my feet dry for as long as possible.
