I grew up in Minnesota, which besides the great lakes, we are landlocked by the ocean and besides Alaska we are one of the northernmost states. While it still gets up in the 100s°F during the summer, it gets well below negatives in the winter. Theres really only a couple venomous creatures that live in the very southernmost part of the state, like brown recluses and one type of rattlesnake I think. Most other venomous creatures can't survive the cold temperatures i think.
We do know about creatures with teeth though, like fish and snapping turtles and mammals in general. Plenty of creatures with sharp teeth live around and you're generally taught growing up not to stick your hands and feet places they could get chomped on, like holes in either water or land or in trees.
Children there are also generally taught "if you don't know what something is, don't touch it", but more just in an injury sense and less in a chance you'll be poisoned sense. More disfigurement and less death ig.
When I moved to Texas as a teen, apparently all the lessons about what wants to kill you happened in preK and elementary school, I missed that ;(

    • @anonymouse9510
      @anonymouse9510 Год назад +27

@@gwendolynrobinson3900 yeah, I grew up in a major city, in a fairly wealthy suburb (Australia only has suburbs), and we literally had people come in to school every single year to explain various extremely dangerous creatures that all lived within walking distance from our school (my city has huge wetland chains, so you're almost always less than a kilometre away from a massive lake). Like we would literally be told "This is a tiger snake. They sleep on the footpaths in the summer. Don't ever walk in long grass, or you will get bitten. These are Redbacks. You will find them everywhere. Literally. They will crawl up your sinks and hide in your jackets. Be careful." You get the idea. We're taught about almost everything that can hurt us in explicit detail, and almost everyone knows some kind of snake bite first aid. People take it real seriously here.

Ok several points, here we go. First: You're a natural, no fear or nervousness in front of the camera, perhaps it's from playing on stage in a rock band (I'm assuming) but regardless you have great confidence and that is crucial! Second: You know your stuff, anyone that watches an episode comes away knowing more than they did before they watched it. Third: Your delivery is unique, funny, and entertaining. Your timing and placement of one liners and profanity is your meal ticket. Coming from a RUclips addict such as myself I can honestly say I've never seen a "teacher" speak the way you do and it's refreshing and delightful. If my teachers/professors taught lessons with your voculary I would've been entertained enough to pay more attention! Oh and you are very pleasing on the eyes, most educational vids I watch have an elderly (typically obese) professor delivering a Ben Stine monolog which almost puts one to sleep. You are on your game young lady and I think you found your calling. Now as for inspiration for a vid here ya go...were dinosaurs on Earth at the same time as humans? A lot of vids, providing evidence, out there saying people shared the land with those giant terrifying lizards (or birds). I'd like to hear your take on that. Anywho you rock, love your channel and keep up the great work =)

I had a Man ‘o War close encounter on my honeymoon in the Fl Keys while spearfishing, and I was extremely lucky somehow - I was near the surface and noticed blue strings moving across my mask, almost like my own hair would do, I barely registered it moments before I surfaced about 12-14 inches from the floating balloon of pain, and once I recognized what I was seeing, I swam backwards as quickly as possible without ever engaging with a single stinging part. I had a wetsuit on but no gloves, so I know it was absolute chance that I wasn’t stung on my face, considering it was touching my mask glass before I knew what it was! I was way more panicked over the MoW than any shark I’ve seen while diving or snorkeling.

It didn't hurt very much when it first started chewing on me, but when the venom hit, it really burned. The top of my hand swelled up and numbness spread from my hand up my arm reaching my neck. I had mild hallucinations for a few hours, got hella tired and took a deep nap for two hour. When I woke up, it felt like my lungs ached and breathing deeply didn't feel good. The parts that had been numb when I fell asleep hurt. The park rangers were scratching thier heads hypothesizing about what the venom was doing to me, while they ate the breakfast that my mom was serving. The bite took 2 weeks to heal and I have a bump on the tendon on my hand under the bite mark. Later, my mom told me that she didn't take me to the emergency room, because she didn't want to waste an entire day of her vacation at the hospital. I don't know if that is what venom from an octopus usually does, but it is what I experienced. It was my fault for picking up exotic wild animals.
    I love your channel. 😁

I echo the reply here. It’s actually really on your mom for not taking care of her child like a parent should. It’s kind of weird how other animals have this instinctual feeling to run away from brightly colored things, but not us humans. I feel like even if you’re an adult you kind of just want to pick it up. not saying you should, lol, but some of the stuff looks so vivid and cool. But if you’re a little kid, you definitely wanted to pick up the colorful animal.

@@brandonkennedy4160 My mother is a person who is entertained by the suffering of others. Her children were no exception. The more dramatic and extreme the event is, the happier she is as long as it isn't an inconvenience to her. My mother encouraged recklessness in those around her and was excited by drama and stories that came from them. She would regale people with the stories injuries, suffering and near death experiences of her children, but she didn't do anything to prevent it, she encouraged us to put ourselves in danger, but she never took the risks herself. She took credit for our accomplishments as well. She bragged about me doing emergency hospice work for her friend when I was 14 years old for her friend who was dying was advanced breast cancer. At 14 years old, I was stranded in a one room, wood heated ( the wood heater was defective and it was almost impossible to keep the fire going well enough to keep the room warm )cabin with a weakened terminally ill, oxygen dependent women, in a snow storm for three days. The power went out. She told me that if she fell asleep with out the oxygen that she would die. I spent the night listening to her gasp for breath
, knowing that it would be up to me to choose what to do with this woman's body is she couldn't keep herself awake until the power came back on. When the storm broke and my parents were able to retrieve me, I was proud of myself for having the skill to manage a temperamental and staying calm. I was also traumatized. I cried all the way home while my mother ignored me. My mother should have been the one to help her terminally ill friend. She wanted me to pick up that octopus, but would never have done it herself. I have seen siblings lit on fire, broken bones from accidents that could have been prevented and hospitalizations for illnesses that she allowed to become advanced before taking us for medical care. Or a 'this month's/week's favorite animal' with a run down of interesting facts (would be easy to pre-film too)

The standing is part of what makes both yours and Milo's channels so interesting; it helps keep both of you super high energy and really gives the vibe of "what if your professors were cool and awesome". Also, I wouldn't want you to have to redo your set; Diversification: Low-hanging fruits would be 'wtf can I find in my backyard/local park', tier list videos, rants about cheetahs, maybe a cheetah myth video, and reactions to other people's scare videos (i.e. AVNJ and Megalodon videos but for weirder things), or reactions to other people's good videos (i.e. Sam o'Nella's classification video), tell us what a day in the life at the cheetah reserve was like, fun facts about creatures with no context, literally anything you're passionate enough to have this kind of energy about would make an amazing video.

My two cents tho, always do whatever YOU think is best, you’ve built a following because you’re really good at what you do. Format and presentation style are obviously important, and I understand wanting to try different ones out, but as long as the crazy animal facts keep coming, I’ll watch a zoomed in video of just your nose for all I care. My suggestions might be: 1) Maybe do internet quizes speciallized on zoology to see how much you remember from the top of your head? 2) A little spin off of the first one would be to do live twitch and maybe compete with the chat? 3) Maybe a Q&A from your followers like the ones from "'specialist' answer twitter questions", not necessarily from twirtter though. 4) Top tens? Choose from time to time a category and share with us your favs from that category? 5) Maybe stories? From the most wholesome to the most terrorific ones about human-animal encounters? I love how you deliver info, I think it may make you a great narrator. 6) Maybe share with us personal experiences from when you were majoring? Best subjects, most difficult ones, interesting classes that you can remember, how did you get into zoology as your carreer choice?

I know this video is over a year old, but I had to say how important it is to have healthy, energetic, young people (sorry, I'm old - the kind of old when you no longer "trip up", but "have a bit of a fall", yeah it sucks) being aware of, and talking about burn out!! I did not know it was a thing, until I burned out in my early 20s, and have spent the rest of my life thus far struggling with the basics of existing - eating, hygiene, all that jazz - because of Chronic Fatigue/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. I long for the day when all young people go out into the world knowing about burnout, how to recognise it and how to avoid it, and it starts with people talking about it, but people who have life and energy, not knackered old biddies like me, that youth is programmed to ignore for it's own survival! Keep being super awesome (dare I show my age and say totally rad?), your educational style is a breath of fresh air!!

Some immediate ideas I had for some possible videos to sprinkle in between to make the workload less stressful: I’d enjoy seeing you do online quizzes about subjects you think you might know a lot about to “test your knowledge”, or maybe occasionally vlog your experience with putting together and researching for these videos. Maybe do a video about how you got into Zoology and what lead you here (I am genuinely curious). Maybe do a simple Tiktok/short form video series where you scroll through the animal/wild animal tag or get viewers to submit videos and talk about how factual the videos are (sorta debunking/true or false videos). I also quite like ranking/tier list videos, so you could rank animals in different categories either on a serious note (like how venomous animals are) or on a more lighthearted note (like taking different animals and ranking them based on whether or not you think you could beat them in a fight). Idk, maybe this will be helpful, maybe not, but here’s some ideas I thought of anyway. Have a good day! I really enjoy these videos 😊 oh! And keep standing, it works better with your energy.

Glaucus Atlanticus is by far my favorite sea creature! It's so dang cool. And its ability to absorb a man o war's toxins and repurpose them is an excellent evolutionary adaptation. And of course they're very pretty, but as you said- no touch!

Don't worry, take your breaks and don't burn yourself out! If you want to sit because it's straining do so, but I too believe that the energy is much better while standing. Just decide on whatever feels better for you! Or try out both :) The editing is very fun too and I know that takes a lot of time as well. The content is super fun and engaging and very educational and even though I'm not remotely close to working in this field or even having interests in it, I got absolutely hooked by your energy in the shorts, and now here I am, binging all content. ^^ I wish you all the success and hope you have fun with your channel! I'm loving every second of it

Absolutely awesome content! Audio feedback: you are currently picking up quite a bit of room sound. Easy way to solve this is to simply move the mic closer to you by for example using a shirt clip mic, thereby making your voice louder in comparison to the room. You can also add some absorption - "acoustic panels", heavy curtains, a carpet etc - to deaden the room a bit:) Keep it up!!

The Portuguese Man of War is fairly common on the Texas Gulf Coast. We see them from time to time. I’ve never heard of anyone dying from an encounter with one, but I can confirm that its sting hurts incredibly much. Just don’t touch one.

You see them on Padre Island seasonal, so please no Aquarium! LOL I saw a mans leg that was healing and it was gnarly too, from smashing a man o war with his foot and stuff sprayed on his leg.

Nah, dont sit down unless you feel more comfortable that way. I feel like standing up adds to the personality of the vid.
An upload schedule is generally a good idea, though it should definitely *not* be so frequent as to feel stressful. Every second monday or something would be fine. As for Patreon, not sure... Definitely cant hurt. Though its always a balancing act of adding enough value to attract patrons vs crippling the main channel(s). Though it may be amusing to do hatless patron-only videos that are otherwise identical to main-releases. :P
(Seriously though, kinda curious about the hat - is there a story behind it, or did it just randomly become a thing? ^^)

HAHAH this was actually really helpful, thank you! The hatless idea for Patreon is funny. Honestly, I've always been someone who likes wearing hats more. I have a lot of hair (and actually half of it is shaved off so it's easier to manage lol. I have an undercut) and hats/having it up help control it more. I kept with the hat on tiktok because the greenscreen setting looked better with the hat in my opinion, and just kept with the same style here :)

i like you standin up and doin your thing. You give off your own unique vibe doing the videos the way you do and it's incredibly enjoyable! it makes it seem more casual, like you're genuinely standing infront of us and shooting the breeze about some cool animal/plant facts, as if though we bumped into eachother at a coffee shop and started talkin about interests, you give off that vibe and it's great! makes it really comfortable to sit and enjoy the videos because I feel like you're talking to US and not a camera or editor.

I’d love to see a full video over phylum Cnidaria. Such as a breakdown/basic anatomy of the different classes: class scyphozoa (true jellyfish) , class hydrozoa (hydras, Portuguese man o war), and class Anthozoa (sea anemones and coral), and class cubozoa (box jellyfish) which I find box jellyfish to be very interesting and terrifying. As well as giving information on coral bleaching. I think people would find this enlightening and I found it to be one of my favorite units in zoology. I also love your videos btw 🫶🏻

Also, if you feel you’ll get burnt out researching for videos, pls post anything you like, like things you already know, some fun facts or anything! Even if you posted once a month it’d be cool!

This is probably the coolest channel I’ve come across in a while, love the energy, love the facts, love the overall vibe. Zoology was my favorite class in college and I had a bad ass professor, this is giving me a similar feel. If you’re looking for easy content you could try doing some react style stuff to other people on tik tok or RUclips interacting with creatures like this good bad and otherwise in the wild. Would probably be easier and faster than longform deep dive stuff like this, you could even do them alongside each other like a react style vid on the same category. Just ideas though, keep up the dope content can’t wait to see more!
