that princess minerva sounds amazing. My friend Loved Shadowrun to death!!! I still remember my first time playing the game as he was sitting next to me. I died to the first enemy since I missed SO MANY TIMES!
Great video!! Love Phantom 2040!! I ignored it at the time of it's release but discovered it a few years ago and really enjoyed it!! Star Control 2 is awesome! Played it on the 3do and finished the whole game!👍👍👍
Awesome video. Most of the games are not particularly interesting to me, but I looked at the description of each. The author has a talent for talking about retro games. Marvelos!
The Firemen 2 Pete & Danny on PS1 is great, it's in Japanese, but with a little effort and patience you can play the whole game. On Snes there is also another very similar firefighter game called Ignition Factor (from Jaleco). Other firefighter games are PS1's Rosco McQueen (from Psygnosis), in 2004 on PS2 there's Firefighter F.D. 18 (by Konami), and on PCs there's a firefighter RTS franchise called Emergency, which has several games.
I honestly wish that Armored Core had a game that was a combination of that Medabots game that is in the video, the Assault Suit games (a.k.a., Cybernator, Metal Warriors, etc.), and a Metroidvania for the GBA. Were that done right, that would have been an awesome game to play.
A solid list of games. Two more to add: _Crusader of Centy_ (or _Soleil_ in Europe) is a Mega Drive / Genesis Zelda-like where the main character gets familiars. Each familiar grants a special ability, and some abilities can be combined. The story, while short, is also a strong point. _Super Hydlide_ is a MSX action RPG that was ported to the Mega Drive / Genesis. Like most other MSX games, you'll need to find a manual for it, as it's complex enough to need one but lacks much in the way of in-game hints. Even with a manual it's not for everyone, but an interesting attempt at a complex action RPG none the less.
@@st1ka The Mega Drive version both looks and sounds (slightly) better; then again it was released two years after the MSX version, so it's more of a remaster than a straight port.
Another great selection St1ka. The funny thing is while I do agree and love the Genesis version, the current iterations of Shadowrun are based on the SNES entry and even include Jake Armitage who is the main character of that version. Your character finds him, funnily enough, at the start of the game in a morgue paying homage to that entry. Also, I loved Phantom 2040 except here in the states I think they aired the episodes out of order.
@@st1ka If were going pedantic with this, the SNES version is heavily referenced and is canon for the latest Shadowrun games whereas the Genesis version is more faithful to the source material. The pen & paper RPG game.
@@StriderVM Yep I think that's an accurate assment. In the end, the Sega version has almost no story and it requires you to read the manual, so I can understand how someone who is just download a rom might not be into it
*Acktually*, Kyrandia seems to require only a 8088, it really is a 16-bit game! (The same for SC2) OTOH, I do disagree about the GBA being "16-bit". On the right hands, the GBA could do as good as the Saturn! Heck, add some dither transparency to this Medabots and you could see it on the shop, right next o Panzer Dragoon!
@@st1ka maybe comparing to the CD32 would be more fitting; particularly since a lot of the AGA games were either OCS enhanced ports or new, original, games still made with the OCS mindset and aesthetics
Heck, the 3DO would also be a good one. Both consoles use ARM processors, after all! It should be noted, however, that the 3DO had polygon capabilities, while the CD32 was simply a faster (in some operations only) A1200
Fun video and good choices. I've been meaning to check out Shadowrun on Genesis and your review convinced me (and also let's me know how to get started :-) and Phantom 2040 also looks like it very much worth playing.
@@RyutheWeredragon Well, that’s in part because it’s basically canon to the metaplot of the novels and the books, given that it’s about Jake Armitage. Genesis is like a campaign run in the setting. It might be legitimate, it might not.
Remember to read the manual for the Sega version, it really helps. Also, you should spend the first hour or two doing easy quests like escort missions to build karma ^^
@@RyutheWeredragon Yeah the SNES version is the more popular one, but I think it's because the Sega version has a greater barrier to entry. Anyone can pick up on the SNES' rules and controls. The Sega version requires you to read the manual and you start out WAY underpowered at the start. The good thing is that towards the end you pretty much become a demi-god
I’m a long time 16 bit PC gamer, and my favorite one of all time remains Hero’s Quest aka Quest for Glory 1 (EGA), but outside of that, Betrayal at Krondor, Phantasmagoria, Odell Down Under, Chip’s Challenge, Depth Charge, Archon: The Light and the Dark, Knight Games, Robotron: 2084, Dig-Dug, Burger Time, Digger, Cyberia, Full Throttle, Lemmings, Zaxxon, and many various DOS ninja games were what captured my childhood attention the most!!
@@st1ka I 'll give credit on some 8 bit for sure I wouldn't want to have not had. Mario Bros 3, Chip N Dales Rescue Rangers, Ninja Gaiden, even more basic titles like Rampart. And Silent Service the massively amazing sim tittle for it's time to hit a console. Check that one out if you get a chance and know that it takes two Nintendo Controllers to get the most out of it. But as such it makes a great CO OP game to play with someone for submarine operations.
Technically Sega Genesis is 32bit platform also. Motorolla 68000 is 32bit CPU with external RAM bus width 16bit. It's like Nintendo 64 is 9bit console, because it's RAM connected with weird 9bit bus~
@@st1ka I think you're confusing "retro-looking" with "16 bits". :) The GBA may not have dedicated 3D hardware but "number-of-Ds" is a different metric than "number of bits". Bits represented way more than a 90s console marketing gimmick: number of onscreen colors, resolution, processing speed (well, how fast data can be processed, not how fast the CPU runs), amount of addressable (thus, available) memory, both in terms of RAM and ROM, etc... A 16-bit system cannot do what the GBA can, not without severe concessions (Also worth mentioning the PS1 has a processor running 2x as fast as the GBA (about 1.50-1.75x for the Saturn), but the GBA runs over 5x faster than an SNES - the comparison seems even *more* unfair when comparing it with retro consoles...). Playing devil's advocate though, the GBA sound chip has two 16-bit processors, so I guess you could make a case for that? In the same way the Jaguar with its two 32 bit processors was a "64 bit console", I guess? :P
@@rollanddev I mean I get what you mean, but comparing PS1 games with GBA is still unfair to the system. Whereas GBA games feel much more at home on a 16-bit video. :P
Some good points there, even one good quality & often overlooked Amiga game! If you want more, try: X-Out, Disposable Hero (side scrolling shooters) Banshee (vertically scrolling shooter, very bitmap bros -like graphics, but not) Walker (kind of Operation Wolf with movable mech) Virocop (dual stick shooter, that's also kind of platformer) Super Stardust (best Asteroids clone, also DOS version available) Slamtilt (by the other team, that could do quality pinball games)
I used to watch The Phantom cartoon and the Robocop cartoon when I was a kid. I don't remember anything about the The Phantom cartoon, but I remember watching it. Also Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century. I wasn't a kid when that came out, but that theme song was crazy good.
Sega Genesis Shadowrun's cover is the 1e TTRPG cover, by Larry Elmore, and it's one of the best RPG covers in existence. Without making it x-treem, it manages to show you: typical party composition, typical adventure, typical bad guys, and where you'll be when you're dealing with all three. It's pitch perfect.
LOTS of somebodies do, there's a trilogy of modern sequels on all modern consoles, computer OSs, and Android and was even an online game on Steam for a while but it's defunct now...
Regarding the two Shadowrun games: The SNES game is based, loosely, on the Shadowrun novel, "Never Deal With A Dragon". The Genesis game is based on the Shadowrun tabletop RPG. Just a bit of information for you.
The Genesis version wasn't even started until a late beta version of the SNES was presented to FASA staff and they didn't like how the game system was built. They found a company and got them to make the Genesis version with a scratch made script and engine in less than a year that was closer to the tabletop game.
Fun fact: Fantomen (The Phantom) is a very popular Comic series here in Sweden, we even had Live Action tv shows of him, so I believe a lot of people from Sweden have seen and played the Phantom 2040.
Ironically enough, Android Assault was one of the first Sega CD games i ever played. A friend i knew in grade school had one and that was one of the games he had. I absolutely loved it and i have it in my own Sega CD library now.
OH, I'd forgotten about it, but I played "Powerdolls" it was surprisingly fun, but could get very difficult, especially as I wasn't able to look up any sort of tactics guides for it. It was kind of like BattleTech.
I played the heck out of SNES Shadowrun. My brother and his friends played the Sega CD version. I got to the point where I would max out my firearms skill before I left the starting area (SNES). It was worth it to not worry about missing for the whole game.
Before watching this, I thought, "If Dungeons and Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun is not in this list, it would be a tragedy", knowing full-well that it wouldn't be. Imagine my surprise when it was!
The Ignition Factor was another fire-fighting based game that came out on the SNES. It uses a less cartoonish style and focuses more on strategy, preparation, and timing. Bring too many things and you won't be able to run, take too long and you'll lose access to parts of the level that become unsafe, forget the right kind of extinguisher (chemical, electrical) and you won't be able to put out different kinds of fires.
Oh man, in the intro I saw a clip of Run Sabre and I was really hoping you were going to talk about that game. My little sister and I used to play that when we were little, but we could never beat it. It was awesome because it was a 2player co-op game on the Snes, that we could both play simultaneously. Not a lot of games offered that capability but some did. It was fun we both enjoyed it, and even there was a boy and a girl main character so it was perfect
Star control 2 ‘s multiplayer was the best ever. We played at work on their network back in the day. The ships each had another ship that would always win it. It was a real challenge to pick three ships and win all three rounds. Very exciting and you were never sure who was going to win. I could not get enough of the multiplayer. Don’t think i every player the single player part.
With dungeon crawler like no other for 16 bit you should rather speak of Hired Guns than Debuggers, as it was just a crazy game - up to 4 player co-op, inventory management, oppressive atmosphere... It was stunning.
If you're still reading, I suggest Fist Samurai for the Amiga (NOT the SNES version, avoid that), it's a quite original puzzle platformer that also has great visuals, combat and music.I recently played it trough and trough and I can say that it still holds up today. Also: Harlequin, another Amiga puzzle platformer.
@@st1ka in the SNES version they removed all the puzzle elements, it's just a run of the mill platformer (they also removed a lot of bosses). On the Amiga you have to find a number of magic bells and use them to solve puzzles in order to advance. It's also kind of a metroidvania, sometimes you have to backtrack to use a bell or to find a passage (some walls are breakable).

Shadowrun - The Sega Genesis version is the only one I ever played, and I loved it. Looking at the SNES version, I'm glad the Sega one is the version I picked since I had both consoles. My favorite part was the hacking sequences! You could be successful, or you might find you didn't have the right tool(s) in your cyberdeck, and needed to upgrade it (If you played as a decker). The visual representation of system hacking was very cool. I'm also certain CDPR had the Sega version of Shadowrun in mind when they created Cyberpunk 2077.

Excellent video! My personal favorite was Power Dolls. I do not understand why it was not more popular. The graphics look good for the time and Power Dolls has a strong tactical gameplay. Featuring permadeath is something not commonly used in mecha turn based games. The fanservice is rewarding but not too risqué(39:23). I guess the steep learning curve and lack of tutorial turned off most players.
I just found out a keygen used for Adobe Products use a song from the Phantom 2040 SNES Soundtrack. Keygen music always slaps, but I did not know it was from this hidden gem of a game!
I have played Phantom 2040 (rented from Blockbusters), Medabots GX, Shadowrun, Star Control 2 and The Firemen (I bought with Tetris Attack) Fun memories :D
I remember playing Firemen back in the day and it was fun. The feeling putting down the fire was somewhat satisfying. It's quite difficult, though, and I couldn't finish it.
I recognize Legend of Kyrandia 2. I don't remember anything about it, but I used to really like point-and-click, and... yeah, I remember that cauldron flush sequence. Pretty sure I beat it in a vague "Didn't I beat that" kinda way.

I have seen the Anime OVA of Princess Minerva, it's quite a wild 2 episode series that was made to promote the manga.
I need to watch it. I know the anime exists, but I've never seen it.
The anime shows how she recruits her gang.

Amazing list! Nice to see Kyrandia get some love.
Kyrandia 2 and Dune 1 taught me the English language lol
@@st1ka Damn, that's so awesome. I always wanted to learn another language like that, but feels so intimidating. Dx
To be fair, when you're a kid and your choices are English or not playing games, you kind of make due xD
@@st1ka Ha! Good point. xD
@@st1ka - Dune was so excellent on Sega CD, it got me into the movies, the books, the other games, and Islam...why not?
Good work, St1ka! I don't know the games, but they do look interesting.
This video even features purple chest wizards.😁
haha it does
Princess Minerva, an RPG that reflects your current armor? That is fascinating. Though the attire style I am convinced at the time is a case of "Yes teh style is ridiculous so we are gonna out ridiculous the other"
Android Assault was a favorite for Sega CD for sure. The Shadowrun series is a lot of fun. I would love to play Princess Minerva.
I'd love to own Android Assault ^^
Android Assault/Bal-Arma (whatever its alternate name is) deserved an SNES/NSFC or Sega Genesis/Mega Drive port as well. I would also like to see a Ultimate Edition of Darius I and Darius II for the SNES/NSFC, too.
Medabots AX still has a special place in my heart, Medabee version is the 1 i have
It's such a great game!
St1ka, you really are impressive when you bring out these hidden gem videos. I'm a huge fan of rarely played games, and its rare for me to have even heard of more than a few titles per video.
Firemen really caught my eye in the trailer. Great looking game
Hope you'll enjoy it! :D
that princess minerva sounds amazing. My friend Loved Shadowrun to death!!! I still remember my first time playing the game as he was sitting next to me. I died to the first enemy since I missed SO MANY TIMES!
Shadowrun is such a fun game. I love it
Great video!! Love Phantom 2040!! I ignored it at the time of it's release but discovered it a few years ago and really enjoyed it!! Star Control 2 is awesome! Played it on the 3do and finished the whole game!👍👍👍
I wish had a 3DO. It's a really underrated system
the Kyrandia games were always a favorite of mine, back in the day. Great that you added it to your selection!
Awesome video. Most of the games are not particularly interesting to me, but I looked at the description of each. The author has a talent for talking about retro games. Marvelos!
Thank you ^^
Fun fact: Ruff and Tumble are the names of the two protagonists in the PS1 game 40 Winks
01:05 You' re not the only one.
Awesome TV series from the creator of Aeon Flux and Alexander Senki, Peter Chung.
👍
Yep! It's such a good show! :D
Never thought i'd ever see anyone else who'd played "Phantom 2040". Bravo, thanks for covering that game!
I aim to please ^^
The Firemen 2 Pete & Danny on PS1 is great, it's in Japanese, but with a little effort and patience you can play the whole game. On Snes there is also another very similar firefighter game called Ignition Factor (from Jaleco). Other firefighter games are PS1's Rosco McQueen (from Psygnosis), in 2004 on PS2 there's Firefighter F.D. 18 (by Konami), and on PCs there's a firefighter RTS franchise called Emergency, which has several games.
There is also Firegirl: Hack`n Splash Rescue DX, a 2,5D rougelike platformer (multiplatform but only as download available).
I actually didn't know the Firemen had a sequel until recently.
Medabots, the anime, is actually based on the Medarot games for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color.
whoa! the games came first?! Are they good?
@@st1ka Its basically Pokémon, but with customizable robots
@@MagmaMKII ah so it's like the GBA RPG
I honestly wish that Armored Core had a game that was a combination of that Medabots game that is in the video, the Assault Suit games (a.k.a., Cybernator, Metal Warriors, etc.), and a Metroidvania for the GBA. Were that done right, that would have been an awesome game to play.
A solid list of games. Two more to add:
_Crusader of Centy_ (or _Soleil_ in Europe) is a Mega Drive / Genesis Zelda-like where the main character gets familiars.
Oh wow, I didn't know Super Hydlide was on the MSX. which version is better?
@@st1ka The Mega Drive version both looks and sounds (slightly) better; then again it was released two years after the MSX version, so it's more of a remaster than a straight port.
@@Meximagician ah interesting!
Shadowrun is CRIMINALLY underrated. Play it at all costs. It’s one of the best games I’ve played.
agreed! Such a good game
Yeah, I've noticed the SNES game had a bigger impact, but I think it's because the Sega version has a greater barrier to entry.
@@st1ka If were going pedantic with this, the SNES version is heavily referenced and is canon for the latest Shadowrun games whereas the Genesis version is more faithful to the source material. The pen & paper RPG game.
@@StriderVM Yep I think that's an accurate assment. In the end, the Sega version has almost no story and it requires you to read the manual, so I can understand how someone who is just download a rom might not be into it
I totally watched Phantom 2040, and was amazed to find out it was based on a comic from the 40's
right?! It's just a shame the 1940s comic doesn't have any of the cyberpunk elements.
@@st1ka - Cyberpunk existing in the 1940's would've been VERY prophetic science fiction!
@JohnnyProctor9 but how awesome would it be? :P
*Acktually*, Kyrandia seems to require only a 8088, it really is a 16-bit game! (The same for SC2)
OTOH, I do disagree about the GBA being "16-bit". On the right hands, the GBA could do as good as the Saturn!
Heck, add some dither transparency to this Medabots and you could see it on the shop, right next o Panzer Dragoon!
Yeah I get that, the issue is, that I feel comparing the GBA to the Saturn or PS1 isn't fair. so I had to bump it down to the 16-bit gen
It should be noted, however, that the 3DO had polygon capabilities, while the CD32 was simply a faster (in some operations only) A1200
@@DanielMonteiroNit Ah yeah, but CD32 games are basically Amiga 500 games which... again... 16bit xD
@@DanielMonteiroNit Oh the 3DO I do place firmly in the 32-bit generation
always a good day when there's a new Stika vid to relax to.

Fun video and good choices. I've been meaning to check out Shadowrun on Genesis and your review convinced me (and also let's me know how to get started :-) and Phantom 2040 also looks like it very much worth playing.
Both Genesis & SNES Shadowrun are great.
@@endymallorn Though I recall SNES's has the edge up in the fandom.
Those are indeed some great games. I might actually add Hero's quest to the list for a sequel video
Great video St1ka! Thank you for showing me new jems and things to try!
Glad I could help! ^^
16 bit is where true modern gaming began . I'll feel this way despite playing even before the OG NES.
I understand that, though I do love 8bit gaming too
@@st1ka I 'll give credit on some 8 bit for sure I wouldn't want to have not had.
Great choices :D
Is it too early to complain about GBA being 32-bit?
Hehe. Yeah it's 32 bit, but I feel it's unfair to compare the GBA to the PS1 and Saturn for example ^^
The GBA may not have dedicated 3D hardware but "number-of-Ds" is a different metric than "number of bits". Bits represented way more than a 90s console marketing gimmick: number of onscreen colors, resolution, processing speed (well, how fast data can be processed, not how fast the CPU runs), amount of addressable (thus, available) memory, both in terms of RAM and ROM, etc... A 16-bit system cannot do what the GBA can, not without severe concessions
(Also worth mentioning the PS1 has a processor running 2x as fast as the GBA (about 1.50-1.75x for the Saturn), but the GBA runs over 5x faster than an SNES - the comparison seems even *more* unfair when comparing it with retro consoles...).
Android Assault is so good. The soundtrack is in my top 10.
It's a game I'd really love to get. If nothing else, I need to mod my Mega Drive Mini 2 to run it
I still like Black Hole Assault better, lol! 😆
Love me some hidden gems

The Firemen is fantastic. There's a sequel on the PS1 that lets you co-op, with player 2 controlling Danny (the axe-wielding partner)

Some good points there, even one good quality & often overlooked Amiga game!
If you want more, try:
X-Out, Disposable Hero (side scrolling shooters)
Banshee (vertically scrolling shooter, very bitmap bros -like graphics, but not)
Walker (kind of Operation Wolf with movable mech)
Virocop (dual stick shooter, that's also kind of platformer)
Super Stardust (best Asteroids clone, also DOS version available)
Slamtilt (by the other team, that could do quality pinball games)
oooh thank you for the recommendations :D

Star Control 2 has been rightfully called"Your Favorite Game Developer's Favorite Game." It's a must-play, one of the best games of all time.
haha, I didn't know that, but I kinda love that description
Man oh man, I wished to play Super Famicom - Princess Minerva back in the days XD That was my absolute dream game.

That makes sense, because damn, I love that cover
0:25 “…fall through the cracks…”
Well played, sir.
hehe
SOMEBODY ELSE REMEMBERS SHADOWRUN? I used to play it all the time on the Super Nintendo, thus subliminally turning me into the cyberpunk I am today.
yes I rememer :D
LOTS of somebodies do, there's a trilogy of modern sequels on all modern consoles, computer OSs, and Android and was even an online game on Steam for a while but it's defunct now...
Regarding the two Shadowrun games:
The SNES game is based, loosely, on the Shadowrun novel, "Never Deal With A Dragon".
The Genesis game is based on the Shadowrun tabletop RPG.
Just a bit of information for you.
ah that makes sense
The Genesis version wasn't even started until a late beta version of the SNES was presented to FASA staff and they didn't like how the game system was built. They found a company and got them to make the Genesis version with a scratch made script and engine in less than a year that was closer to the tabletop game.
Fun fact: Fantomen (The Phantom) is a very popular Comic series here in Sweden, we even had Live Action tv shows of him, so I believe a lot of people from Sweden have seen and played the Phantom 2040.
Sounds like Sweden is my king of country
Ironically enough, Android Assault was one of the first Sega CD games i ever played. A friend i knew in grade school had one and that was one of the games he had. I absolutely loved it and i have it in my own Sega CD library now.
Jealous! I'd love to get Android Assault
I still prefer Black Hole Assault over Android Assault personally...

I watched The Phantom when it was on TV too. Billy Zane's best work outside Titanic.
OH, I'd forgotten about it, but I played "Powerdolls" it was surprisingly fun, but could get very difficult, especially as I wasn't able to look up any sort of tactics guides for it. It was kind of like BattleTech.
Oh yeah, Power Dolls is super difficult
Medabot GX is an awesome game! Unfortunately, I can't beat it when i was small. May have another trial someday!
I lost some 10 times before I won my firt battle. It takes a while into get into the groove of things.
I played the heck out of SNES Shadowrun. My brother and his friends played the Sega CD version. I got to the point where I would max out my firearms skill before I left the starting area (SNES). It was worth it to not worry about missing for the whole game.
I have to admit, I'm not a big fan of the Sega CD version. I do love the Genesis version though :D
Whoever owns the rights to the PC-Engine version of "Princess Minerva" should think about an English translation for PC and consoles.
I'd love that.
Before watching this, I thought, "If Dungeons and Dragons: Warriors of the Eternal Sun is not in this list, it would be a tragedy", knowing full-well that it wouldn't be.
Imagine my surprise when it was!
Haha
The Ignition Factor was another fire-fighting based game that came out on the SNES. It uses a less cartoonish style and focuses more on strategy, preparation, and timing. Bring too many things and you won't be able to run, take too long and you'll lose access to parts of the level that become unsafe, forget the right kind of extinguisher (chemical, electrical) and you won't be able to put out different kinds of fires.
I might use it for another 16-bit hidden gems video should I make a sequel video ^^
Yeah I was officially going to feature that game and a few others but ended up cutting them for time
The fake ecstatic laugh gets me every time 😂
Hey, I know you from gamefaqs from years ago. Awesome to see you still kicking it and in such a good fashion. Very nice list. Keep on truckin'!
Oh wow, that was a long time ago haha
Star control 2 ‘s multiplayer was the best ever. We played at work on their network back in the day. The ships each had another ship that would always win it. It was a real challenge to pick three ships and win all three rounds. Very exciting and you were never sure who was going to win. I could not get enough of the multiplayer. Don’t think i every player the single player part.
I used to love the multiplayer back then. These days though, I prefer the campaign :P
Also: Harlequin, another Amiga puzzle platformer.
oh, interesting. I had only played the SNES version. How does the Amiga original differ?

I guess the steep learning curve and lack of tutorial turned off most players.
if I had to guess, I'd say the lack of a proper tutorial killed it
