Gunjan Utreja: Hello and welcome to New this week on Artistaloud.com the sound of independence. Today on the show I have an artist who needs no introduction. Someone who is often referred as a man with a Golden voice. Todays Barry Tone who could sing in possibly in every musical genre, someone who inspired millions across the globe to pick up a guitar. He was the first ever Indian to actually sign a western music album. Wow isn't that incredible. Please welcome the legendary Gary Lawyer. Gary sir welcome to the show. I am very excited to meet you here for the first time.
Gary Lawyer: Like wise
Gunjan Utreja: I've been told as a child you were very shy. Is that true?
Gary Lawyer: I think its very true. Exceedingly shy.
Gunjan Utreja: So how did it happen that a person who is very shy goes on to become such a great performer.
Gary Lawyer: A lot of singers, a lot of musicians are essentially very shy people. I mean to site an example, from what I've read. Everybody has heard of Freddie Mercury, a legendary performer, a legend composer but I know the family that's why I think I can afford to say what I am saying, I believe he was an exceedingly shy guy to begin with but once he got on stage he was like an explosion.
Gunjan Utreja: A different person all together
Gary Lawyer: A completely different person, it was like a transformation.
Gunjan Utreja: So though you were shy, you were always fond of music?
Gary Lawyer: Music was ofcourse like my right arm. Music is something I more than love. It's a part of your being. I think its an extension from your past life.
Gunjan Utreja: As a child apart from music you were also fond of bikes and kites.
Gary Lawyer: Well that I still am. Kites absolutely, I love flying kites. I guess that's kind of linked to my love of motorcycle and the outdoors. They are both expressions of ultimate freedom.
Gunjan Utreja: So what is it that you love about flying and bikes.
2:04 Gary Lawyer: Bikes I have a very strange attraction to it. I've said this before, if there is anything I love as much as music, probably more, its motorcycle.
Gunjan Utreja: that's a mark of a rock star.
Gary Lawyer: I love motorcycles. I really do. I have been from New York to L.A. on a motorcycle...Amazing.
Gunjan Utreja: Amazing.. that's like east coast to western coast.
Gary Lawyer: its like four days of hard motorcycling and with the throttle wide open.
Gunjan Utreja: Because you love bikes, you love kites and you love music, I am sure a lot of stories would have been involved in creating music while you were on these long rides.
2:42 Gary Lawyer: Absolutely. Every album of mine has at least one song on the motorcycles. There is Mother nature and me, there is a song called Riding, there is so many. Motorcycle and music have been my true great loves.
Gunjan Utreja: When did professional music happen?
Gary Lawyer: You know its so strange. I knew I was going to be a professional musician from the time I was a kid. I didn't know where, I didn't know how, I didn't know when. The kind of thing that was encouraged in a typically Parsi household that I came from. In my background music it was like...
Gunjan Utreja: It helped you a lot.
Gary Lawyer: It helped in a sense that we had a great collection of records and music but it wasn't encouraged as a profession. It was great as a hobby but the moment they knew that this guy wants to be a professional, they said..
Gunjan Utreja: I thought that Parsi's where the ones who ... you know because Parsi theatre was really promoted.
Gary Lawyer: Not music really. Music was not and also when I was growing, you might say I was the Woodstock generation. It was like music was associated with drugs. The moment my family knew that I wanting to be professional musician or that I have started singing, getting into it seriously. They kind of said that 'No, no this boy is totally ruined'.
Gunjan Utreja: He is on the wrong track. So how did you overcome that obstacle?
Gary Lawyer: I think just by doing it the way I did it which was from the heart and soul and then when I started getting acceptance that's everybody starts accepting you.
Gunjan Utreja: Its quite interesting that you said I want to be a rock star, your family thinks...
Gary Lawyer: First of all I never ever thought of a rock star, I consider myself as of a purely western musician. I do a lot of Jazz also. So you know the rock thing might have come from the journalist world I use to do a lot of shows with the great Louis Banks doing Jazz standards. Развлечения
