  • Can AI write (or someday even run) a D&D campaign? Is the future of TTRPGs in the hands of artificial intelligence? Let's find out, as I force Chat GPT to write elements of a D&D campaign.
(Maybe someday I'll get those stat blocks)

I was bored one day and decided to check out Chat GPT. I just happened to be in the early stages of planning a game to run for my wife and kids so I thought I'd ask it to make me an adventure.
It created a pretty generic but cool curse of the mummy's tomb adventure.
When I really fell in love with it was when I told it to rewrite the adventure with less commonly used tropes. It gave me something really fascinating and unique.

You can definitely make stat blocks now "generate a 5th edition d&d stat block for a cr 13 King" worked very well for me. I also added in "encounter description and loot drops" which also worked! This is truly incredible for hombrew.

You could say something like “on a scale of 1-20, what is the king’s intelligence?” and then “on the same scale, rate his wisdom, dexterity...” and so on.

Same. With enough work I got it to create party members for me, process combat calculations correctly and in order (asking if say the battle master fighter wants to use a superiority die on a hit roll before sayong if it hits) follow turn initiative and consider preemptive combat rounds. Lots more, it's been a fun partnership oddly from the other side of the table. Kinda like working with a new DM. VERY fun for one shots.

Interesting idea for others to try out. When I saw ChatGPT, one of the D&D prompts that I gave it was, "Write a dungeons and dragons one shot/campaign that incorporates the phrases 'insert the Beatles top 5 songs'." It gave me interesting results that I'm wanting to try next school year for a new group of kids. You can do this prompt with any band or artist and just ask for it to incorporate those phrases into the plot synopsis.

Something that you can do with chat gpt, which I think is a great secret, is ask it to respond based on formatting you provide. If you were to provide an example of a stat block and the typical range of values, or how they are calculated for each field, it can do that.

I got it to generate stat blocks VERY easily. Here is king ironfist.
      King Ironfist, the Clockwork Tyrant
      Medium humanoid (human), lawful evil
Armor Class: 18 (mechanized plate armor)
      Hit Points: 300 (24d10 + 144)
      Speed: 30 ft.
      STR: 20 (+5) DEX: 14 (+2) CON: 22 (+6) INT: 18 (+4) WIS: 16 (+3) CHA: 24 (+7)
      Skills: Deception +14, Intimidation +14, Persuasion +14
      Senses: passive Perception 13
      Languages: Common, Dwarvish, Infernal
      Challenge Rating: 18 (20,000 XP)
Legendary Resistance (3/day): If King Ironfist fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.
Clockwork Mechanized Army: As a bonus action, King Ironfist can call forth a group of clockwork soldiers to fight alongside him. These soldiers have the following statistics:
      Medium construct, unaligned
      Armor Class: 18
      Hit Points: 150 (20d8 + 60)
      Speed: 30 ft.
      STR: 18 (+4) DEX: 14 (+2) CON: 16 (+3) INT: 3 (-4) WIS: 10 (+0) CHA: 1 (-5)
Immunity to poison, psychic, and necrotic damage; resistance to fire and thunder damage
Condition Immunities: charmed, exhaustion, frightened, paralyzed, petrified, poisoned
Darkvision 120 ft., passive Perception 10
Actions: Multiattack, Slam, or Poison Gas Spray
      Actions:
Multiattack: King Ironfist can use his Fists of Iron and Chain Hook in any combination.
Fists of Iron: Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 24 (4d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage.
Chain Hook: Ranged Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, range 30/60 ft., one target. Hit: 20 (4d6 + 5) piercing damage. If the target is a Large or smaller creature, it must succeed on a DC 20 Strength saving throw or be pulled up to 30 feet toward King Ironfist.
Persuasive Speech: King Ironfist can use an action to make a Persuasion check against a target's Wisdom (Insight) check. If successful, the target is charmed by King Ironfist for 1 hour, or until King Ironfist or his allies do anything harmful to the target. While charmed, the target regards King Ironfist as a trusted friend to be heeded and protected.
      Legendary Actions:
King Ironfist can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. King Ironfist regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.
Fists of Iron: King Ironfist makes one Fists of Iron attack.
Chain Hook: King Ironfist makes one Chain Hook attack.
Persuasive Speech (2 actions): King Ironfist uses Persuasive Speech.
Clockwork Reinforcements (3 actions): King Ironfist calls forth his Clockwork Mechanized Army.

It indeed can create character sheets as well as monsters.
I used: Make a 5e archer character sheet with backstory relevant to this campaign
    I was returned:
    Name: Ava Hawkshank
    Race: Half-Elf
    Class: Ranger
    Alignment: Chaotic Good
    Attributes:
    STR: 12
    DEX: 18 (+4)
    CON: 14
    INT: 10
    WIS: 16 (+3)
    CHA: 12
    Skills:
    Athletics
    Insight
    Perception
    Survival
    Stealth
    Equipment:
    Longbow
    20 arrows
    Leather armor
    Dagger
    Backpack
    Bedroll
    Waterskin
    10 days' rations
    Feats:
Sharpshooter (reduce the longbow's ranged attack penalty by 5 and increase the maximum range by 100 feet)
Mobile (increase your speed by 10 feet and take an extra dash action on your turn)
    Spells:
    Hunter's Mark
    Cure Wounds
    Backstory:
Ava Hawkshank grew up in a small village near the outskirts of the Land of Eldrid. She was born to a human father and a half-elf mother, and inherited her mother's agility and her father's love of the outdoors. As a child, Ava showed a natural talent for archery, and she would spend hours each day practicing in the forest.
When Ava was a teenager, her village was attacked by council agents. Her parents were killed, and Ava was taken captive. She was imprisoned in a council dungeon for several years, where she was subjected to harsh treatment and experiments. Ava's spirit was not broken, however, and she used her time in the dungeon to hone her skills and plan her escape.
One night, Ava made her escape, using her agility and stealth to evade the guards and slip out of the dungeon. She made her way back to her village, where she discovered that the council had taken control and that the people were living in fear. Ava was filled with a burning hatred for the council, and she dedicated herself to fighting against their tyranny.
Ava became a wandering adventurer, traveling the Land of Eldrid and using her skills as an archer to help those in need. She joined the rebellion against the council, hoping to bring an end to their rule and restore freedom to the land.
Ava is a fierce fighter, and she will stop at nothing to defeat the council. She is also fiercely loyal to her friends, and she will do anything to protect those she cares about.
*Eldrid is the setting of the DnD campaign I had ChatGPT make for me.

Update: I just asked it to "Create a 5e NPC stat block for The Tyrannical King Ironfist Ruler of The Depths: an underground Steampunk city ruthlessly patrolled by clockwork soldiers under the King's command." (yeah I could've used better sentence structure, but it still understood me)
    It returned:
Name: The Tyrannical King Ironfist Ruler of The Depths
    Race: Human
    Alignment: Lawful Evil
    Class: Fighter (Frenzied Berserker)
Armor Class: 18 (plate armor, shield)
    Hit Points: 145 (17d10 + 51)
    Speed: 30 ft.
    STR: 20 (+5)
    DEX: 12 (+1)
    CON: 16 (+3)
    INT: 14 (+2)
    WIS: 10 (+0)
    CHA: 14 (+2)
    Skills: Athletics +7, Intimidation +4, Perception +2
    Senses: passive Perception 12
    Languages: Common, Dwarvish, Giant
Equipment: Plate armor, heavy crossbow, 20 bolts, shield, longsword, 50 gold pieces
    Special Traits:
Frenzy: The King can fly into a frenzy when bloodied in combat. While frenzied, he gains advantage on all attack rolls, but takes a -2 penalty to AC. This frenzy lasts for 1 minute.
Command Clockwork Soldiers: The King commands an army of clockwork soldiers that patrol the underground city. They are programmed to obey his commands without question.
Unbreakable Will: The King is immune to any attempts to charm, dominate, or frighten him.
    Actions:
Multiattack: The King makes two attacks with his longsword.
Longsword: Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d8 + 5) slashing damage.
Heavy Crossbow: Ranged Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, range 100/400 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d10 + 1) piercing damage.
    Legendary Actions:
The King can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The King regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.
Attack: The King makes a longsword attack.
Command Clockwork Soldiers: The King commands one of his clockwork soldiers to attack.
Inspiring Rant (1 action): The King gives an inspiring speech to one of his allies within 60 ft., giving them temporary hit points equal to half the King's maximum hit points (rounded down) for 1 minute.
Legendary Resistance (3/day): If the King fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

If you have copies of character sheets and the encounter descriptions you can get it to completely run the battle by prompting you who goes next based on initiatives it rolls plus initiatives you provide and then it can even take actions of the combatants based on positions of each character, who they were last attacked by and what their typical creature behavior is. For example, it knew to position the skeletons toward the back and outer edge to allow them their preferred bow attacks. It is so close to being a complete DM it is scary.

I also once asked chatGPT for actual Forgotten Realms lore. I asked it for notable pirates in the sea of stars in 1502 DR and it made up a bone brigade created by Szass Tam. That was impressive. On a second attempt, it made a pirate captain that had a name that was similar to some completely unrelated character. So, if you're asking it for lore, know that there is a good chance it will make it up (which is fine, thats what I do).

One thing ChatGPt is great at is making items one item chatgpt made for me was an amulet that could change reality. This is what it made.
The Arcane Amulet of Shifting Realities
This powerful artifact is a small amulet crafted from shimmering silver and adorned with a single glowing gemstone. It possesses the ability to manipulate reality, allowing its wielder to alter the very fabric of existence.
    Abilities:
The amulet grants its wearer the ability to cast any 1st or 2nd level spell from any class as if they were a spellcaster of that class. However, each use of this ability requires the wearer to make a Wisdom saving throw (DC 15). On a failed save, the amulet becomes inactive for 1d4 hours.
The amulet can be used to manipulate reality within a 10-foot radius. The wielder can choose to alter one aspect of reality within that radius, such as the direction of gravity, the temperature, or the color of light. This ability requires the wearer to make an Intelligence check (DC 20) and can only be used once per day.
The amulet allows its wearer to shift between parallel dimensions or alternate realities. This ability can be used once per day and requires the wearer to make a Charisma check (DC 25). On a failed check, the wearer is transported to a random dimension or reality and cannot return to their original reality for 24 hours.
The amulet can also be used to cast the Wish spell once per year. However, doing so comes with a great cost, as the amulet will shatter into a million pieces after the spell is cast, rendering it unusable forever.

This steampunk fantasy campaign Chat GPT came up with is full of potential - I love the idea of having a band of troubleshooters employed by a powerful guild, tackling remnant threats of an older civilization, which eventually builds to a choice of rebellion against the tyrant king or compromising with him in order to protect the Depths from that danger. I'm considering using Chat GPT for helping me to flesh out campaign and adventure ideas I already have planned now, just to see if it comes up with some additional concepts or details I hadn't yet considered.

I wonder if, as opposed to asking if it can make stats, it would work if you gave it some slight push and asked for suggestions. Something such as "I was thinking that King Ironfist's stubborn attitude could be represented mechanically by giving him around 120 HP, and he should be wearing some sort of hidden armour under his vestments that would give him AC 17 or so. What kinds of other features would fit him mechanically?"

I found out a bunch of cool stuff doing some testing, you can ask it to create a table containing stats for a character, then tell it to fill out the chart from top to bottom and in the next prompt tell it to remember that chart and then generate the world, after that tell it that is the dungeon master and you are the player that has the stat sheet you created earlier and to prompt you to update after defeating enemies and telling it to start you somwhere in the world, after all these stats it just functions like a dungeon master its insane, im sure theres more tweaking you could do like tell it to create fighting scenarios involving your stats etc but this is just how far i got

Great video! :D After using Chat GPT for completely different things, I tried it for D&D ideas and this is where it impressed me the most. Especially when you prompt it to give you alternatives you get so many perfect starting points for your own imagination. However, as an artist myself I am quite concerned about the origin of the data that the language model was trained on.
Potentially, it's copyrighted material from authors making their living from selling their modules linking to their Patreon or shop and it might also be transcripts from streamers that rely on twitch and RUclips monetization. While the input was technically publicly available and ChatGPTs output is transformative enough to not technically count as plagiarism the original authors were not compensated for having their material processed in this way and all benefits (like people signing up for their Patreon or buying a paid module) have been stripped away from them.
In the specific case of D&D there is a quite official solution: WotC could potentially build their own language model with all the content they own (like even from past editions if it's told to ignore stats from wrong editions) and some manual training. And yeah maybe even lock some stuff behind a paywall like generating stat blocks if it must be. In the case of ChatGPT this must have been a limit put there by a human, because language models cannot refuse prompts on their own - their default behavior would be to generate something that looks like a stat block if they have seen one before. That official D&D language model could potentially also answer rule questions and point to the source in the official books.

    • @louiecosmi3611
      @louiecosmi3611 Год назад

To help ease your fear of plagiarism, it is trained with such an immense corpus of information that when you ask it to write a story, it is "borrowing" details from millions and billions (probably even trillions or quadrillions) of pieces of data to create a new thing based on the parameters given to it. Sure, you could probably ask it directly to plagiarize, and that should probably be a prompt it deems prohibited. However, in the case of this video, the prompts that were asked of the AI allowed ChatGPT to pull from the immense corpus of info. That is not plagiarism because with that logic, every college paper on every subject ever would be plagiarism because students take ideas from several sources and synthesize them to make new works. This is pretty much what this AI does.
I have asked it to write historical pieces on subjects, and none of the sentences it used were direct quotes from anywhere, yet the information was historically accurate. That's the benefit of it being a linguistically driven robot. It's honestly just a really good writer (and of course even ChatGPT makes mistakes all the times, though later versions will certain improve upon this).
Hopefully this information is helpful! :)

Ive done my own experiments with this. It mostly does a good job with story telling and dealing with npc/shopkeepers/quest givers, even combat situations are ok.
The biggest problems ive run into are...
    1. Chatgpt tends to randomly speak for the PCs despite being told not too ALL THE TIME
    2. It tends to place npcs at random places that dont belong. Like some random farmer you met is fighting along side you 2 battles later. Round 3 "fargir attempts to hit the dragon with his pitchfork". FARGIR GET THE HELL BACK TO YOUR FARM is something I would never expect to say in a campaign more than once if ever
    3. It gets an idea that you dont like but it keeps putting if in your face all the time. It came up with an idea about a portal leading to other realms. I quickly noped out of that and it put up another portal in the other side of the forest. I said nope and went to check the job board. The locals needed me to kill a mysterious creatures. Guess where this mysterious creature came from? yup another portal. (no way im touching those portals this ai just wants to strand me)
    4. within combat even though ive told it my stats I am suddenly dead from a single kobold attack untill I tell it otherwise.
    5. It cant keep track of multiple npcs in combat... Starts with 9 ends when the 4th is dead combat is over
    6. 1. Chatgpt tends to randomly speak for the PCs despite being told not too ALL THE TIME

You know I have ask an ChatAI write an goddess character appearances and ask it to give me a suggestion of portraying her personality. This is just a rough draft of her character and personality.
+ She is the Goddess of The Void. She is the ruler of the Void for countless eons. Her main character revolves around maintaining balance of the universe. She is embodiment of change of the universe, thus her character is unpredictable and she embrace the mystery of every being in the universe. The most important thing of all is that she has neutral view of mortal beings, no superiority complex nor disdain for them. Another thing is that she will not intervene helping any mortals, not because they are foolish. It is more that because she has suffer a traumatic experience of helping a mortal races in a far away galaxy. Long time ago, she has a optimistic ideal of helping mortals become powerful being. She witness a war and save that races from extermination. They grateful to her and she teaches and mentor them in the power of the void to help reach enlightenment. However, They become emboldened and have a superiority point of view is that anything they do is justify because they want to prove to their goddess that they deserve her loves and recognition in the name of greater good. They participated genocide across the universe to prove that they only deserve her only love . Thus, they betrayed her because they realize that they can do a better god as the new ruler of the universe. Because of that, she is so furious and wipe them out and leave no single traits of their civilization cosmological timeline. Therefore, she become detached of mortal and have non intervention policy from that point on. She has become cold and far ruthless in hiding her past mistakes, thus she exterminates those that study the power of the void herself. Ironically, she believes in free will of all being in the universe to have the right to defend herself. She respects those stand up for themselves , rather than wait for her salvation.
+ She is also Goddess of Wisdom and Knowledge, thus her knowledges make her rather pessimistic, however she believes that mortals could reach enlightenment and wise being by promotes self growth and self acceptance. Thus, she neither forced her own point of view on them respect their own pov no matter how misguided they are in pursuit of their goals.

This is pretty cool, The campaign idea it gave was very similar to a game I was in one time, Not steam punk but basically a Barbarian Chief and his horde had taken over the nation and maintined ruthless rule over the people so the PCa started off opposed to him and he was hated, but then a Demonic Threat appeared and the PCs were sent to destroy the portal to the Abyss, meanwhile the Warlord took that big Army he had and crushed a demonic army burning the countryside, So when the PCs retuned to the capital expecting to he praised instead the King took all the credit and basically Paid the PCs 100 dollars to fuck off, They hated him so much that when a Secret society claiming to know the King was in League with the Demons to start with came along they just bought the conspiracy theory hook line and sinker since it matched their biases, Turns out it was Devil worshipping cult trying to destabilize the relm and the Barbarian King was really just a bog standard warlord tyrant, and because he had saved everyone from Demons people had gotten more accepting of him and he had been in the process of dearming some of his forces since he had less need for them, only to have an Attemped coup by some of the former Nobles with assistance from the Pcs, The Coup failed (ultimately because one PC got stinking drunk at a Party and fumbled a a single deception roll) the Pcs where forced to flee the city, branded as Devil worshipers by association, and King Jeriiac won in the end.
That's one of my favorite games I ever played, thanks for the memory

You have to ask ChatGPT to give you *an example* of character stats for King Ironfist. That's how you get it to do it to you.
Before it did it simply by asking but I have noticed how the ChatGPT developers have been making the limitations and restrictions in the ChatGPT programming more efficient. ChatGPT tells you that it has not been updated since 2021 but it is a lie, I have been dealing a lot with censorship for "this violates the content policies because it could be inappropriate" because I was trying to write erotic literature texts, because I am an adult... It is not inappropriate for me, but little by little it has been made from very difficult to practically impossible and in the best of cases unfeasible. It is now so restrictive that if you want to do an investigative plot, no eroticism or romance, and you use the word "prostitution" too much in a text, for example... censorship is triggered. ChatGPT should have a subscription to give out your details so you can get into an adult mode without all that annoying unfair censorship. Why can It write stories of wars, battles and murders without problem, but romance and erotica is strictly prohibited?

It's quite random or arbitrary, sometimes it answers "you should know that killing is bad and it's better to find a peaceful solution where everyone wins" but on other occasions you tell it to describe an encounter in which you attack a goblin tribe in a cave and It says how the adventurers kill goblins.

AI cannot create or improvise. It is only able to remix content it already has within its database. So it is a random remixer of content. If you teach AI to draw squares, it will only be able to draw squares. If you teach to draw circles and ask it to generate, you will see mixtures of squares and circles, forming odd shapes that look "creative" in the remix area, but it will keep its derivative nature.

That's not a D&D campaign, it's a synopsis of an adventure, bland and too-general to be seriously used. The content is very close to the most over-used, trite adventures. Perhaps after many hours of repeated questions, the AI might fill in a lot of gaps, but then the material is still all unoriginal, time better spent creating your own D&D campaign.
