it's me. on youtube now. exciting right? here's a video about the rise and fall of the modern mullet. i love mulelts. tiktok: jimmy.penfold insta: jimmy.penfold
This is the perfect synopsis of the mullet. I always felt like we saw such a resurgence of the mullet in 2020 because men who normally had to have clean cuts for the workplace. They had a chance to finally experiment with their style since they were all remote. The first reference photo I ever saw was Billy from stranger things. Great work!!
Men's cuts in 2015 were so boring. Just side part after side part with a skin fade. Tons of hair gel Occasionally generic long hair. It got played out.
Gen z loves taking things that we're considering uncool and tacky and making them cool by virtue of being young and for the youth. The best counter culture and way to separate ourselves from millennials. Fanny packs, socks and sandals, short shorts, big clothes. Even body hair. I love my unibrow and facial hair. I'm 21 and thought it was weird how millennials were obsessed with "it being so last year".
@@johnindigo5477 you're giving gen z way too much credit, gen x and millennials used to thrift clothes, wear their parents clothes and experiment with hand me downs and torn up clothes just because they were young too
it so was. I remember I used to watch this scene kid called tabs24x7 or something like that, her hair tutorial video. and in the video she described it as a 'high fashion mullet'. it was (and is) my dream hair......
Interesting. Having grown up deep in the Australian mullet culture most of the examples you showed (especially in the history section) don't really strike me as proper mullets at all. Also interesting to hear an international perspective on the "mullet trend". In the urban centres of Australia there was a slight uptick in the number of young, trendy types wearing mullets; but throughout most of the country the mullet's popularity seems to have been pretty consistent since the 70's, amongst footballers and people whose style is mostly informed by footballers.
Righhht the mullet a couple of years back was the first time ever not saying "uhh idk shorter I guess?" at the barbershop so no way I'm gonna switch again immediately
@@Debrugger nah I grew my hair out to like just under my chest and ended up hating it but loving the modern mullet and I decided to cut it all off lmao
Thanks for the explanation and history. I'm Canadian grew up during the height of the mullet in the 80's and the style was taken to the extreme by our hockey players. I think it's still often referred to as 'hockey hair' in Canada to this day.
omg jenny pls make more videos like this! the youtube format definitely suits you just as well as the instagram/tiktok stuff - as a long time fan of your barbah work it’s lovely to be able to sit down and drink a coffee while hearing some info about my (unfortunately) favourite haircut lmao
Ok so I live in the Pacific Northwest so i never saw this style of mullet around here much, the dominant mullet around here is the portland lesbian mullet. Sort of longer and shaggier always with curly hair. I still see it tons its a good haircut.
im currently rocking the skullet(shaved totally bald, no guard on top, shoulder length curls in the back, plus some curly disconnected sideburns for flavor) and it has been so so fun . i was doing the modern mullet for a while and i was just so tired of having the same goddamn haircut as every other queer person in my college town . stupidest haircut and best style decision ive ever committed to
The mullet i always think of first was my elementary school gym teacher's. She was big and confidant, reminds me of the bakery owner in Kiki's, but blonder. Long curly back, short sides, and all her hair in the front curving and pointing upwards.
Aunty Jenny what do you think about the pompadour (from the 50s ) with a mullet and also Id love to know your opinions on pompadours as a mullet expert yourself since theyre basically just a mullet but for the front (any ways happy to have you on youtube love your ig reels)
is it possible to send you an Instagram dm with a few pics of my current hair I have been extremely insecure about my head shape for a long time now and I am so confused about what haircut to get. I live in Denmark so getting cut by you isn't possible but could I pay you in some way for an opinion on what haircut would suit me?
i had a mullet before 2019/2020 then buzzed it all off over lockdowns and now 2024 i have a long curly redneck mullet again i was cool before it was cool and now im learning i am now uncool before it was cool and thats cool
I feel like that saying about trends dying super fast if they come up super fast is almost always true. There’s very few exceptions, and when we’re talking about the modern mullet, it already had many haters including me. Unlike certain brain rot terms that have persisted in a trendy way. The mullet had hater, and it only had one group of people doing it, which were hippy white men who also added on the pedo mustache, and you’ve got only one group of people and a ugly ass stache ugly on ugly was bound to fall off. The modern “mullet” that was decent was the Jay Jo, but some people including me don’t really think it was a mullet, the back of the head was slightly grown out, but I think a mullet really has to be grown out instead of it just being a couple inches longer. But yeah, the modern mullet was used by some kinda condescending influencers and they just looked annoying. I don’t know how else to describe it. Many other hair cuts look way better than the mullet and pedo stache combo
I havent cut my hair in a year and basically have a big ginger afro, kind of. What styles would you recommend for someone that cba to get their hair cut loads, maybe like 2 or 3 times a year?
Thank you! I will try, I’m normally better at eye contact in my TikTok’s but because this one was so long I had a hell of a script! Appreciate the love and advice :) ❤

the rise and fall of the modern mullet and the barbers from mars
gonna keep getting a modern mullet anyway, it took me years to come out of short back and sides so im sticking with the mullet until like 2027

Thank you so much! :)
Very cool and informative video.
I really like fashion trends, especially on hairs. Can't wait to see what the next big thing's going to be!
I guess it takes me 6 years to get onto a trend. I'm growing my first mullet... but I like the mod cut too, I might get a crossover!
