Alternate ending: Human advanced all the way to the finals and was congratulated on incorporating magic into his combat so well and so quickly. His reply: "Wait, you guys have magic?"
Yeah, I first didn't get it, then it made ALL the sense, Im too much of a nice guy most of the time, so didn't get the innuendo first attempt, I personally would've punched clean couple teeth for a Crocodile Dandy styled hat, THEN rip a tail off the "hinge"
At first, I assumed the twist would be that he didn’t use magic. That the Terran selection was held in private to hide that our martial artists don’t need magic to compete. But this was satisfying in a different direction.
Honestly, given the RPG terms used to described Controllers and Instinctuals, I thought the story was going the RPG route where humans combined practitioners of the two styles into single units that reinforce each others' strengths and mitigate their weaknesses. Basically magical combined arms.

Not just Controllers. I think many, if not all, human Battle Mages could adapt that quickly. However, without the emotional factor, they won't be quite as strong in either category if they focus on the Adaptor magic. But it really is unpredictable what would set one off. Depending on a number of factors, the set off might not have been quite as strong even in this scenario. It would still be a dangerous surprise, though, and lizard boi would have still been hurt pretty bad. Even if Paul had just had a particularly bad fight with his daughter. Among humans, it's hard to find a parent who isn't this protective. Even evil parents who are willing to pimp their own kids will do worse than kill you if you do hurt their kids; even if they allow it for others in their "inventory" and abuse them themselves.
Some humans when enraged don't go berserk like the guy in this story. They go ice cold and calculating, practically turning into super fast battle computers that figures out how to take down the offender in the fastest, most efficient (or painful) way possible, and then executing those plans equally quickly and efficiently. So an enraged human controller could become even a more powerful controller.

there are also those that are so incredibly in tune with their own instincts and soul that controller and instinct merge together, simultaneously using reason and emotion, focus and impulse which while it may not make them as agile as a pure controller or as strong as a pure instinct, nor give them the ability to shift easily, the fact that the two combine would still make their strikes that much more dangerous along with their instinct
You could even add on to the magic system this way by adaptors combining the styles Ex. Psycos who are extemely calm and calculating when brought to rage, could become a "Lethal" type that focus on simply shattering their opponet in a single attack
Yeah that's about how I expected that to go. Awesome little story. But what people don't understand is, when you get to that skill level and someone managed to take you off there's a point beyond a blinding hot rage. There's a point where you can call it a cold rage. A point where the burning heart rate run so hot that a switch is flipped and ice water flows through your veins. In that state, nothing else matters and you will use every tool against the ire of your rage. Whether it be social, jokes, precision, and all that unbridled fury is now your fingertips.
Two things I wonder about the lizardman. One did his tail grow back. Second what did his wife/girlfriend think about his doing it with another female. She may have ripped off something else.
I knew this fight was gonna get south real quick when that lizard mentioned the guy's daughter... I did not expect it to go south so bad that the lizard would be confronted from the north...
You can just imagine Bruce Lee slapping the lizardman and then asking, "What was that?' Followed by Bruce rubbing his nose with his thumb, dancing a bit and then disassembling his opponent.
I was kinda expecting that the human competitor would be something of a hybrid, but I certainly didn't expect that (or the trigger for it). Quite understandable though, this is why you NEVER threaten a human's family.

Yah, that was a huuuuuuuge mistake on the lizards part... you don't threaten children of any kind around humans. Sure one or two might not care or even harm children themselves... however, the vast majority will proceed to rip you (and that small maniority of child hating and hurting humans) a new one at even the slightest threat.
I feel like this would ultimately be a better world for humans, sure shit could go south quick but equally possible we’d have just as many people trained to reign in our own as there were enemies to fight.
and if anyone had bothered to tell paul that not socializing with the other fighters is seen as a grave insult none of this would have happened, he would have probably even apologized.
Two things you most always be careful of and be scared of. 1: The controller a person in control and can make the enemy move how they want, but you never get them angry since they than become a berserker which can not be stopped unless you kill them since they feel no pain and only want to curb stomp their enemy into the ground and make sure they never get up again. The only thing worse is number two. 2: A fighter that lets his emotions control them and lets them lead them in the fight, but when their anger emotions suddenly go cold they become true controller since they now see everything around them, what can be used as a weapon, and how his enemy will move and use those movements against them. When they become cold they can litter see everything and nothing his enemy can do will not be seen and nothing they can do to win. I have known both types of fighters and the truly scary one is the an instintual fighter than become a cold controller since their emotions are now so cold they make liquid oxygen feel hot.
Meanwhile, the lizardman just genuinely heard that his daughter was a nice person and good company, and was trying to give the alien a genuine compliment...
I liked this one up until he crippled his opponent for the taunting he was expecting. Very poor control on the human's part and not at all sporting. Man shouldn't have been in the ring if he couldn't handle shit talking ffs.
