The lyrics were written by the Anglo Welsh poet Katherine Philips known as the "Matchless Orinda" Highly regarded for her poetry and translations in her brief life 1632 - 1664 she died in London of small pox, a few years after Purcell's birth.

Да.. Не слышал ещё барочного композитора печальнее Пёрселла. Даже у Баха, у которого эмоциональная палитра наиболее ярка и обширна, я не находил столь утончённо-декадентских настроений (что, в принципе, не мудрено с учётом его строгого лютеранского мировоззрения). Музыка Пёрселла, на мой взгляд, это лучший саундтрек к чумным шекспировским временам с их изысканностью и флёром тотального пессимизма...

Soledad casual la del sabio y soledad sin trabas la del ermitaño a cuya voluptuosidad se entrega pues siente la plenitud entre seres y lugares que le propician una vida sin conflictos: árboles, montes, ríos, animales domados o alimañas. Purcell elige esta en los versos de Antoine Girard de Saint-Amant, traducidos por Katherine Philips como añoranza idílica, en contraste con la vida cortesana. Aspiración idealizada. Anhelo remoto que, paradójicamente, la música convierte en lamento amoroso: «O solitude, my sweetest choice!/ Places devoted to the night,/ remote from tumult and from noise./ How ye my restless thoughts delight!» / .

It is such a pity that dearest Henry died so young. I am still mad at Frances for locking him out. Imagine all the wonderful works that he could have composed if he did not meet such a premature, untimely death.😢

This reads like such a buddhist dhrupad (North Indian baroque). Very Milarepa. Very Shiva in Repose. It speaks of the trees, connoting not simply relishing the trees surrounding, but as a bodhisattva leaving solitude for enlightened pursuits should the players entreat such. So in its seeding of dharmakaya, in karuna/caritas a study of Right Motivation in finery. I hear many ancient modes, here, and some quite difficult to carry in dharma's pith or timbre, including to the benefit of advanced practitioners. Excellently written.

Coincido con SJuli, esta es la clase de música, junto con Bach, que Scholl debió seguir cantando. Creo que arruinó su exquisita voz tratando inútilmente de ser escuchado por 2000 personas en los gigantescos teatros de ópera actuales, a través de enormes orquestas. Gracias a Dios que grabó muchísimo en su juventud y eso ya forma parte de la historia musical del siglo XXI.
El contratenor con la voz más elegante que conozco, Andreas Scholl cuya voz de terciopelo acaricia el alma, de sublime profundidad y lirismo...para mí, mi preferido.

En temps normal, j'écoute plutôt du heavy métal...
J'aime ce que l'on regroupe familièrement sous le registre "musique classique", mais ce qui me gène c'est que j'ai l'sentiment que les compositeurs écrivaient chacun spécifiquement pour les gens de leur époque, un peu comme les compositeurs de musique pop aujourd'hui, suivant les modes.
Avec cette pièce, c'est come si Purcell avait eu une vision de l'ensemble de l'histoire de la musique , de son époque jusqu'à aujourd'hui, et qu'il ai cherché à écrire une hymne pour l'humanité. C'est comme si cette pièce lui avait été envoyée, dictée, par une force supérieure... Dieu, peut-être.

I greatly love this song but in true English its name ought to be "Aloneness ,my sweetest choice " .In main ,all these latin and greek loanwords needlessy thrust, over the last thousand years , upon the loveliest English speech ring otherwise well when heard in their own latin (italian ,spanish ,portuga,french ,romanianl ) or greek speech background ,but when heard in english or other germanic speech background they truly wound the man's hearing and are a sheer earsore for the listeners.I speak latin and its most strongly linked tongue ,the Italian as well as I speak Greek and I am not against them ,but I am against their words unbefittingly borrowed into English ,other Germanic tonges ,the Celtic tongues and the Slavic tognues.Europe needs all its tongues and not only an uglily blended latino-greco-a little -english tongue ...
