This kind of thing drives me nuts in these videos. Makes a claim that people would say "oh yeah I hate that kind of thing" and easily jump on board with but it's like semi-accurate. Feels click baity almost. Nkt exactly but similar.
The entire Battle Network Series, as a whole, is criminally underrated. Every game of the Battle Network series and Star Force series deserve a review. Still, I'm glad that the Battle Network series is finally getting it's just recognition, and I hope this will intrigue newcomers to enjoy the dynamic storylines and ever-progressing gameplay, as I did.
I beg to differ. MMBN 4 deserves a lot of things, most of them unkind, but not a review. To my mind, it's the only main game that marred an otherwise terrific series.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't think I'm alone in this. Part of the problem is that the content is spread across three different games (the first run and two NG+) to get all the unique opponents in the tournaments. The enemies are stronger (and replace older, weaker ones along with the chips they drop), and things like the locked/blue data and shop inventory are updated. If you're like me, and rush through to get all six Double Soul transformations, you miss out on a lot of content. I'm not 100% sure on this, but I think some of the upgrades in the locked/blue data are just lost forever if you don't get them on the appropriate run. And, y'know, being forced to complete the game close to three times to get something as basic as all the Double Souls is padding to an extreme degree.
Unpopular opinion I like Battle Network 4 more than the first game gameplay wise story of 4 was really bad but I prefer the actual gameplay over 1 by a longshot.
Hub Pie I would like to suggest you take a look at Tri Wing, a multiplayer MMBN game currently being developed that recently was successfully Kickstarted. You can follow the active development in Vincent Veak's channel.
I was like: "wtf?!? Jirard made a video on Mega Man Battle Network, holy shit!" *instant like and favorite* This series is one of my all time favorites :D
I can't believe he crapped on the game and didn't even strategize with the code system and kepted on using shitty chips like cannon 1 when he was already in the later parts of the game. The reason he found it so difficult was because he was using everything in different codes so he was only using one chip every time the gauge filled. If he built his chip deck with a bunch of matching codes he could use a ton of chips every turn and not just tickling the boss with his pea shooter 90% of the time. And if he added the chip "FstGauge" there would almost be no down time. He would have known about this if he just done read and remembered the tutorial instead of just skipped it by mindlessly pressing A.
Warped Sand Completely ridiculous that he was tanking damage instead of dodging. And why was he moving from a guts wave when there was a hole in front of him? Fustraiting, but he got through it, so...
Gotta agree. 2 is just so much better than 1 ever was. 3 was great...5 was awesome, 6 is the best. I feel...as if something's missing. But that can't be right.
There was a DS port of the first one, with an added crossover to the Star Force series, and an extra chapter, too. Simplified code selection, and some bugs removed. But you never heard of it, it was japan only :
Because... they could do that? And so they did? Just like why most games are in 3D now? In any case those games were at the least on par with Battle Network. I was critical of the change in game perspective as well briefly, but it works fine if you actually give it a try.
Yes thank you of informing me that they could do something so they did. The point being, it was a trash decision, ruined the battle system, looked ugly as all hell, it was slow, difficult to see and in every possible way mechanically and visually the isometric 2D was better. I've tried it, MMBN 1-3 are among my favorite games of all time, that junk on the DS was an abomination.
17:10 "This truly is random" *gets a busting level of 2* I realize you went into this game relatively blind but in your review you state things that are outright wrong all throughout. I know we've been fans along time and ofcourse we know the mechanics of the games but it seems you didn't even try to figure it out. Misinformation is a plague and you should do your best to avoid spreading the plague. I hope you try battle network 2. If you do, save yourself some agony. Jack into everything, collect HP memory. You need it I think. Change your folder and drop weak chips like cannon as you get useful chips throughout. Choose 1 or 2 chip codes and stick to only them and asterisks for your folder. You'll hit your opponent with atleast 3 chips. Then by the time you do that, you can recycle your 'hand.' Chips are certainly not random drops and are based around your busting levels. Which goes up with fast deletion, multi deletion, and goes down with using your buster (which you used as your primary weapon) and getting hit. Later series add new customization and styles. Later on you can use other navis (bosses) souls after you beat them, which combines with lackluster chips to create devastating effects. I must tip my hat to you for your dedicated patience. I can't imagine playing through the end game bosses with beginner level chips and the buster. Must've been agony.
I played the game blindly and it does have issues. One, The Internet itself is a god damn maze I mean Battle Network 4 wasn't perfect but at least that one didn't have internet that looked the damn same and had uniqueness on the Internet overworld. Secondly, fuck the blackout stage and screw that one boss where he had those two damn ball throwing assholes on his side that makes it almost impossible to dodge the damn bombs when going into WWW. The story I do not get his argument at all it can get a little flat or cheesy but its much better than 4's by a longshot. Gameplay felt more of a grind from all the fighting. It's a great game but I know this sounds weird but I preferred Battle Network 4 overall because advance the story you need good gameplay and this one lacked that aspect. I remember being frustrated at BattleNetwork but this game would have shamed Battle Network 4 on difficulty.
@@nah4467 you also have to remember that this was the very first entry into the series where they had no idea what they were doing. It had a lot of issues but they were never enough to outshine the good. I have always found MMBN1 to have the worst network map in the series but they at the very least realized it was an issue and worked on it for later releases. Some of the bosses were far from perfect (Looking at you, Colorman) but with 19 bosses in the game, there's going to be some bad ones. Even the later games couldn't avoid this but there were much better mechanics by that point, making these fights more forgiving
The first BN game has HEAVY first game syndrome. 2 and onward fix most of your complaints. More post game. More/better chips. Better chip drop rate (3 introduces the collect program to guarantee a chip drop). More of a reason to fight enemies because of the style system. Better program advances (Body Guard is your best friend). And more of a reward for completion (like hard mode or a new final boss).
1) Chips are not gotten by random. its base on how well you complete the battle. this is seen by the busting level at the end with rank S as the highest. 2) Program advances are not very strong?! 2XHero says hi... 3) this game is hard? thats because you are not playing the game to its fullest. I can S rank bosses by 1 shoting them using 2Xhero and other powerful program advances. i had no issues with any of the bosses and i was only 13 when i played it. All in all, making a review when you only have so little hours invested in a game isn't fair. Just because you got everything, doesn't mean you truly understand the game.
Well remember he usually plays classic Megaman and Megaman X, and he's trying unsuccessfully to compare those two games (which are one style of game) to Battle Network (an entirely different style of game). He's using his prior knowledge to play this game, but his prior knowledge is based off an entirely different playstyle.
@@alicestar5187 I started MegaMan with the X series and I still was able to adapt to Battle Network's mechanics very easily when I started with Blue Moon at around 12 years old.
When he says the Program Advances suck, I think he mostly only used GCannon1 (from playing 3 Cannon’s with different codes) which is a mediocre Program Advance since it is one of the first you can use in the game...
Fun Fact in the dub of the anime they completely erased his first name and just called him Chaud Blaze while the japanese kept his original name as Enzan Ijuuin or Enzan Engine which to be honest would be a kickass name for an international secret police agent.
The Life Aura chip was most likely just meant to be used for multiplayer, which you neglected to mention. That's part of the draw in general to collecting all the chips, being able to build stronger folders to beat your friends in battle.
tbh, the biggest thing I disliked is the change of the internet look. I mean, I get it, but I really enjoyed having the narrow paths representing what I assume to be cables between computers with having obvious boss fights. Navigation seemingly sucked(because the thin roads were confusing), which is why they changed it, but it allowed for so many customized versions of the internet that werent just a different background and a different color palette. I mean, I know they did it in the future games too, but not at the level of difference that was in BN1.
I played battle networks 3-6 as a kid and I’m restarting on the first game since I never got to play the series’s front he start. And I can agree that the first one is by far the shittiest one compared to literally the rest of them. But damn am I still having fun
@@GaryGlass1 it was the first of the series... Shouldn't be much of a surprise that it kinda sucks gameplay wise. I played 5 and 3 first.. still find 4 and 5 to have the best overall gameplay and progression. (3 and above benefit especially from the Navi cust) 6 was a bit too easy at times.
This _was_ the first entry in a new series after all, so you cannot expect it to be perfect, because that is why sequels exist, to further improve upon the foundation.
there is a big difference between a game with some issues and a huge disaster hint: if the game actually got a bunch of sequels, chances are it was the former
A lot of the issues you have with Battle Network 1 are fixed in later games(such as escaping battle). Also the program advances are definitely worth considering due to the damage you get from them (Guts Shoot, Double Hero, etc...) While the chip folder is RNG, you do at least want to build one with a singular chip code theme to try to maintain consistency and move fights along quicker. If your chip folder is basically an "alphabet soup" in terms of chip codes, expect to die a lot.
anyone with 'some' experience with TCG get the concept of cutting down the RNG with multiples of the same card , or in this case, chip. Altho they're cards in Starforce I think? There's SOOOOOO many strategies, combos, and Program advances in these games , i can't even keep track, but pros are really good at em and I can only watch with awe and slight envy cuz im not smart enough or can remember them all.
@@drakke125Channel Starforce has Battle Cards, correct. Life Sword is still my favorite program advance because it's SO easy to build (all 3 sword chips are just good on their own) and then it does 400 damage in a huge area. That's enough to wipe boards if you use an areagrab.
The later games are WAY better than 1 and 2! You totally gotta play 3, 4, 5 (Double Team Version), and 6! Some of the best gameboy games ever made for sure!
Never really had a problem with megaman battle network. All attacks are pretty easy to dodge, not really sure why you are having such a hard time with the random mobs. (edit)Alot of the scenes you used in the video just shows you standing in their path of fire without even trying to dodge.
Danny N There's a trick I'd always use with Bass, especially in the later games. If you pause and unpause your game rapidly you can see where Bass' rapid shots are going to hit because the squares light up yellow. You can then dodge accordingly.
my complaint isn't even that he isn't "good enough" it's that he asserts that the battles and chips (both collecting and drawing) are "completely rng", and "you can be one-shotted by bosses" which is patently false. Also overlooking the fact that there are 6 whole secret bosses to find, learn and beat because the final chip can't be used on anyone is absurd to me.
I feel like a lot of the complaints he has about this games difficulty is mostly because he wasn't trying. Just judging from the scenes he showed in the video -He missed a lot of his Battle chip attacks -He would stand in the path of fire without even trying to dodge (most of the time hes just standing still firing his blaster) -He also never once used a "program advance" (combing chips) or talked about it. (edited. he did talk about it. My mistake.) I'm sure hes trying his best to get out as many videos as possible to replace the ones he'll be taking down so I don't really blame him for not trying too hard, but I'm just disappointed that a lot of his complaints could of been solved if he just took his time and played a bit better. Also I hate the fact that he said that he"has to lose the battle" as if implying there was no other way to get around taking damage. 13:40 the scene he showed when he said this showed two enemies (who killed him) using an attack that slowly go across the whole board. For the viewer who never played this game before, this may seem like an impossible to dodge attack (which would justify the point hes trying to make) but he showed that the attack can be dodge at 13:16.
Danny N Jirard did talk about Program Advances, but thought it was just a useless mechanic. There is a point in the video where he uses the Zeta Cannon, but fails to realize he is supposed to keep pressing A to fire it.
Jirard you really need to keep going with the series, at least through BN3. As a completionist you will LOVE the amount of post game stuff in that game. It makes up a solid 30% of the playtime. And the changes to the battle mechanics in 2 and 3 make the games vastly better than the first. BN1 is an ok starting point that laid the groundwork for the series but it definitely doesnt hold up well especially after 2 and 3 basically fixed all the major issues and did everything else better.
I always feel bad since I have a big Love Hate relationship with the 3rd game. I hate how it managed to make the customization mandatory in a lot of places and therefore make netsurfing more tedious on top of some other problems. I was pretty surprised to find out that it was the favourite game for half the fandom, since I honestly enjoyed my time more with 4 overall. MMBN 2 is still the best though, maybe being rivaled by 5.
If you want to experience the true greatness of the Battle Network series, you need to look to Battle Network 2. A brief summary of the series, if you will: Battle Network: The first one. It established the series, but compared to the later games is "meh". Battle Network 2: The first FUN one. This is where the series really took off. Introduced Style Changes. Battle Network 3: Great story, the best post-game, introduced the Standard/Mega/Giga chip classifications. Originally intended to be the final Battle Network game. Battle Network 4: DO NOT PLAY! Replaced Style changes with Soul Unisons. Introduces Dark Chips. Battle Network 5: Home to the very hit-or-miss Liberation Mission mechanic. Kind of "meh" all around but for different reasons than the first game, but uses the things introduced in BN4 better than BN4 did. Battle Network 6: The final game in the series, the story is easily the best in the series because of it, fun mechanics, great music, a good send-off for a criminally underrated series. Soul Unisons are now called Crosses.
I agree with all of that, except battle network 5 being meh, It might be because I loved liberation missions? they added a much needed challenge to the series, and allowed you to play as different navi's for the first time, and had rewards based on how fast you completed them.
The reason I called it "meh" all around is because while yes, I will admit that I too enjoyed the Liberation Missions, the Liberation Mission mechanic was something that you either liked or you didn't. And while, imo, the Liberation Missions were fun, outside of that I didn't really feel 5 was anything special. Also, 5 wasn't as challenging as 3. 5 is made even LESS challenging if you're playing Team Colonel, since in that version, Shadow Chaos is a thing.
I loved Liberation Missions, I know there are people who disagree but I found them more engaging than the puzzles, but BN5 also has plenty of backtracking, that "defeat 100 samurai" rhythm game that can be really annoying for some people (though it's not a huge deal), and that goddamned logistics puzzle in the Japanese castle that ground my progress to a halt on my replay (I don't know how I ever beat it before). The JudgeTree puzzle in BN6 is basically a better version of that castle puzzle. Oh and I don't like that since I bought Team Protoman, the story is non-canon in significant ways. Also Colonel has since become my favorite Navi, I just wanted to learn more about Protoman at the time. :v 5 also gives you the most broke-ass abilities in a series known for giving you broke-ass abilities. So... eh?
I understand where you're coming from about BN4, but I have to admit that it was a good competitive game, and in many ways it helped improve the battle system with the introduction of the Dark Chips & Soul Unisons. It's not a good RPG, but it can be a fun game if you consider that the story exists to get you from one battle to the next. BN5 is just a very different game and I wish they'd done more with the Liberation mechanic and the ability to play as different navis. And, you've ignored Battle Chip Challenge, which I honestly enjoy for the unique spin on the battle system..
Not gonna lie. Watching him whiff most of the chips he used really made me question his abilities. As well as the fact that it seemed he never learned how to make good folders with similar code chips resulting in him using the buster in about 30-40% of the footage
@@Cronosecks I swear how does this guy play classic megaman but is unable to play battle network very well? It’s significantly easier and to me the gameplay is more straight forward while being more unique to each player because of the ability to customize your folder, my first game in the series was battle network 3 and I don’t mean to sound hateful but I swear I played better when I was 9 than he did in this video
You know you’ll have to redo this now, especially with how they are releasing the whole network, prepare for all 11 games and for 20-30 hours each, I’m so excited!
sad, this series was one of the best, yes the first was not that great but try the other one, I felt like listening to a guy telling me zubat is a flying pikachu
Why is the chip system at all being compared to Pokémon. Just because you collect things that do things does not make it Pokémon. It's more like Megaman (what a surprise) where you aquire powers as you play.
Thomas Tsang Because if you read the battle network complete works (an art book/ developer interview) it was litteraly inspired by the Yu-Gi-Oh!/Pokémon games
Thomas Tsang he compared it because you have to collect over 150 of them. And that is seriously tedious, like collecting all the Pokemon in a game or all the Pokemon cards in the TCG..
The sequels hugely improve on the games core concepts, I hope you think about playing them. Great review though, I think you were a bit harsh in some areas, but I chalk those up to different strokes for different folks, cause a few of the complaints you listed were positives for me when i was playing it... The Card combos were great to discover, and always felt powerful to me, the combat even with the RNG was great, and fighting and defeating Bass really was a reward for me. I don't really recall having much trouble with the combat even when I played them on release back when I was like 10 or 11... Also, for the chip drawing each battle, you can Pass and add more cards to your selection, making Combo cards easier to build as well as giving you a wider selection. You didn't mention this and a few of comments you had on the battle system made it sound like you weren't aware of this function or its purpose, like when you mentioned drawing 5 cards at the beginning and coming back to those 5 when the timer came back up... Anyway, yah, the Sequels are much better, and while I played and enjoyed every game in the series alongside my brother, I believe it was 2~3, with the "Forms" and such that were my favorite. I loved stuff like Bug form, where if you glitched out your upgrade board you could acquire a form that had a bunch of RNG effects like granting you temporary invulnerability, or reversing your controls lol... Seriously... play the sequels.
Zayaan Nashrid To be fair, ADD is...weird in 1. You only get the 10/15 chips until you actually pick some chips once, then you have to waste turns again. It's much better in 2/3 when you can dump unneeded chips to permanently extend it for the battle.
Yeah I was watching the video thinking- How did he beat the game using the buster?!? Or cannons?!? I usually found a chip set I liked and rocked it with chips only. Hardly ever used the buster, lol. If I had one complaint about he series, it was the lack of incentive to use the buster. Styles helped with this. And the custom system. I've really got to go back and replay those games! Wonder if we'll ever get a mmbn collection for the 3ds?
Mmbn6 came very close to bn3’s strategy. 3 and 6 are very special to me❤️ blue version and falzar especially though as I kid I wanted gregar. I still have 1-6☺️ and still play them often
BN4 is the weirdest thing. It's almost a bootleg version, except made by Capcom of all people. The art style is different, the plot is weird, it feels really disconnected from all other games... And it was actually a best seller game. Like, wtf.
I actually really enjoyed BN4 and played it the most out of all of them. I mean, maybe because I had to because of the repeating game mechanic, but still fun for me.
Fun fact. These games are the reason I love MegaMan games. Got this with my first GBA and I fell in love with it. And I've played every MegaMan game I've gotten my hands on since.
Jirard, I feel like there's a lot of things kinda off with this review mostly due to a pile of small misunderstandings. Battle Network as a series is really fun single player, sure. But those crazy end game chips are for multiplayer. These games have solid VS play! As a completionist playing solo, yeah, they're not a great reward if the journey itself was a slog to you. As for GETTING chips... well, a lot of the games do make it kinda hard. But as you go in the series there's more ways to get them. Quests, quizzes, chip trading machines, trading with friends... plus I don't think you were aware... your battle ranking affects what you get in battle as well as what you kill last. At least in some of the games- can't say for all of them. So say you want the new chip from the enemy that gives you hammers. Well, you make sure you kill that last after doing a good job in a battle... you're very likely to have it. As for the plot and some of the games less desirable traits... well, yeah, the first game in the series is weaker than later entries. I don't even remember if the first one lets you change modes. Didn't seem like it did. Most Battle Network games let you gain abilities based on bosses and so on. Like a flamethrower buster and more power with fire chips. Plus they expanded the chip libraries and chip selection methods and added equipment systems. But yeah, people probably weren't recommending the very first Battle Network to you specifically when they said Battle Network. All that aside, Megaman Starforce was a great successor to this series as well and PLEASE also play a ZX game. The ZX games are great, it's a shame there's only two of them.
This review would be better if he wasnt trash at this game. None of the things he has an issue with have ever bothered anyone i know or myself. I beat this game at 13 no issues. Its not difficult
@@krsynx A lot of non-english speakers actually know what certain stuff does. They understand most of the game, but dont know all words yet. I was super frustrated at the game because I had to fight Magicman, had no idea how to apply or buy powerups so my health was at around 200 hp(I accidentally bought some and never knew why my hp increased)buster only dealt 1 damage, was slow as hell and couldnt charge, so I ended up relying on chips a lot. I had my entire folder build around the alphabetical order since that was pretty much required. I mean, even without knowing perfect english, the arrows alone in the tutorial were enough to know chips were going to be very important.
...I found Battle Network 4 easier than this game and I know you love personal experience fallacies but some people have strengths and weaknesses on certain genre's. The damn Internet was a damn clusterfuck maze I mean look at how it is now. Battle Network 4 at least had better stages of the internet with unique backgrounds and telling you which one you're even in both in and outside the internet. Sorry, but I think nostalgia blinds just like my forgetfulness on some of the bad stuff on Battle Network 4 Red Version of it anyway. I know Blue Moon annoyed the shit out of me but Red Sun is the better game for Souls like Roll and Searchman and I hate the final boss of it but I think he is much easier than that damn cheap ass bomb squad based boss blocking your path to WWW. But this game does have a really good story but I think this one is overrated a tad bit.
Oh gosh, I'm so excited to see Battle Network on here, I hope he does the whole series. So underappreciated. Dunno if the first game will levae a good impression or not though.
First, your buster is a totally secondary weapon, the main weapon are the chips that you can select yourself in your own "deck". That's a important part of the game; making a good strategy with your chips and don't use the buster as a primary weapon. Also, you should try the BN 5 for the DS, in that game, you don't need a chip to escape, and the graphics are better and the soundtrack is way better with the addition of voice actors. Also, STOP COMPARING THIS GAME WITH POKEMON. Edit: wow after 100(kind of)% the second game I can assure myself the buster is NOT secondary once you get Styles. I guess I was too used to Bn5...
I suppose I should support the huge push for pushing through this series into its later games... The first game does get the core style down, but it really is the inferior game in the series, which is great, because sequels are supposed to either try new things or improve on old things, and the sequels to this game most certainly improve on the original. Also, haven't watched your videos in awhile, and I must say I love the new intro.
Eh I feel like the main reason he didn't enjoy it was because his folder(as far as I've seen snippets of) sucked. Which means battled sucked, which means his experience sucked
3 and 6 are generally regarded as the best, 5 being generally well recieved, 2 is fine, but 1 and 4 are...disliked. It'd be fun to see him suffer through repeating 4 *evil laugh*. Then there's shooting star, which...was hated.
I've seen more people prefer 5 than the rest, in all honesty, but even they admit that 6 is one of the best. 6 was my personal favorite, playing the rest of the series (minus the original. I jumped in at 3, then got 2, then followed the rest as normal. Glad to know I didn't miss too much)
Underrated as fuck, in my opinion the chip system in battle network completely shits on the weapon system in the classic games, bosses aren’t weak to one specific weapon because there are typings and they intuitively make sense
I fucking LOVED Battle Network. I played the hell out of those games, and I grew up with the originals too. But how have you had no experience with the Battle Network series until now? You even have some of the games on the shelf on your set there. >.
Ok, now that I've finished watching the video, I have a few things I'd like to say. 1) If the footage of gameplay in this video is from you, then you are really lacking in strategy and timing with your battles. 2) I could be mistaken, but I believe you can also get the Bass chip from beating Bass, but I didn't see/hear you mention that. 3) Please, please, PLEASE do check out the sequels. If your only experience with the Battle Network series was the first game, then you are missing out. They add so much to the story and improve the battle system so much in subsequent games. Battle Network 3 and 5 were my favorites out of the bunch, but you really need to play all of them to get the full story.
I love the Megaman Battle Network series. But I'm also very nostalgia blind for it. So to me your review was super honest and great to watch. The first few games do have their flaws but overall are masterpieces for the certain type of fan. A lot of the early problems are addressed and fixed in the future installments with some new ones popping up in their stead. But overall I know you'll the series as I and many others do. =] I look forward to watching any future/remake Megaman review video you post up. Keep up the good work Jirard and crew!
I mean, If you're going to make a folder with 15 different codes, it's bound to suck compared to a Folder with one Code with great synergy. (Code R baby)
This games mechanics were extremely unique and really good for the time. It took a leveling up concept and made the user actually have to strategize to get better. On top of that it made it so that your strategy would make your play style very unique and individualistic, which is rare even for today's gaming standards.
Getting chips from enemies is not random, it's based on your performance. If you always get rank 2 (like your video shows) then you will almost always get trash instead of the chips you want. You should try the 4th or 5th game in the series though. Those two (4 technically) are quite good, and address many of the issues you had with this first entry in the series.
Same. I think I liked 2 more for the story, but I have a lot of memories battling a friend of mine on the bus with 3 (we even had the opposite versions from eachother)
Gamercoon 2 is my personal favorite for the same reasons though I can see why others like 3 more for its post-game content. 2's story to me really shines like that rapper in magnet man's scenario or how the final area is so busted from radiation and etc, also Gater PA is my bae
My favorite has to be 6, I play it competitively and the Beast Outs, Crosses and LinkNavis make it my favorite GBA game ever, it's a shame the game was massively cut down because Boktai 3 was never localized, but folks over at therockmanexezone made some amazing patches and codes that let you play the full game.
Ehhhhhhh. As someone who played this game for the first time when the legacy collection came out, but STARTED with battle network 3 and on as a kid and adored them (still do) I can say for certain this is the WEAKEST game in the series. People often say 4 is the worst for some reason, they're all wrong, it's this one. This is the ONLY game where I said "Fuck it" and left, completing THE ENTIRE REST OF THE SERIES before finally going back and finishing the first. Battle Network as a series is top tier Megaman, absolutely. But THAT game in particular? Mmmmmmmmh, have you played it recently? It's INFURIATING in a lot of instances.
Oh wow, see this is what I mean! You're always listening even if we don't even know it. Thanks for the awesome content Jirard, and good luck on your next game! I just wanted to point some things out if you are considering completing the rest of the series. Maybe this can help you decide whether or not it would be worth doing. There are 6 games to get through if you choose to. The Battle Network series gets deeper the further you play. This even gets to the point where the stories of 4 and 5 are physically connected and 5 continues 4's story. The later games only expand on the previous titles. And they get rid of the Escape Chip and actually give you a flee from battles button starting from either 2 or 3, I don't remember exactly. I believe it is 2 however. If you plan to complete them all then good luck... The later games can get a little insane with chips and content. And there are versions starting from Battle Network 3, which usually would be a problem on GBA, because you would need to connect the versions together to complete the chip library, however the Wii U rereleases realised this and have workarounds in the forms of giving you the ability to get all the chips. I'd stick to them to make the process a LOT easier. That being said, Battle Network 5 is a bit of an outlier. The versions of Battle Network 3 and 4 are very similar. They may have different chips and maybe a different secret boss, but nothing extraordinary. Battle Network 5's entire story is different dependant on the game, and all the bosses you fight and the abilities you get, are dependant on the version of the game. There is somewhat of a solution for this however. They made an enhanced DS port of 5 that contains both versions and allows you to have a save file of each game if you want to experience both teams Protoman and Colonel. Or you could just play them separately. Battle Network 6 is the same, both stories vary, but unfortunately if you want the whole experience you'd need both versions because that was all that was released. Sorry if I bombarded you with information, and if you have no plans to continue the Battle Network Series then I apologise again for the unnecessary info. To be honest I wouldn't blame you, because I have tried in vain to complete just one of these games with the ridiculous aftergame content the later entries are well-known for, and they can be daunting. Then again, you ARE The Completionist, and I'm not. Thanks again for the solid content Jirard and the team! You guys work so hard on your videos and it's inspiring.
Nice! You should to play MMBN3. Thats the most polished and enjoiyable one in the series story and gameplay wise. Improves over 1s weaknesses in everyway. They put the run from battle feature as an option instead of just a chip. Added the Navi Customizer and Sytle Changes(Features added in 2) Also lots of * Code chips which are wild cards usable with all the the other chips in the game. And the post game of 3 is one of the best I've experienced in any game Just improved on the battle system in many ways that make it more streamlined and less cumbersome after the first one
Eff it you should just play the whole series! Its awesome. Plus you're gonna get a lot of views lol. Respect for fully completing this one though. Even I haven't completed the first one yet.
This video is kind of bizarre. The focus being so much on the reward not having much use beyond all else and some weird points: 1) Battlechip drops are not random. The higher busting rank, the higher chance of getting the chip. Getting as S basically guarantees it. 2) Battles are not pointless. Money serves as the EXP system and is spent to upgrade your base stats. 3) Base being the reward for 100% is good. Hyper focusing on the chip and not the fight is weird. Bass being in the game also teases the next title which was cool at the time. 4) The chips can be used in VS mode which was and always has been an element of the series Battle Network 1 isn't the best in the series by any means but this video is really odd to me in the direction it went.
At first I thought this was a harsh review until I realized that you only played the first one. The first one has it's bumps in the road. I started with MMBN3 and loved the game. I found it harder to go back to and play MMBN1, but I still enjoyed it. I think you would really enjoy MMBN3. I think 3,4 and 6 were my favorites. Hope you give the rest of the series a try.
I'm so glad you completed one of my favourite game series! And yeah, I think you did a good job on discussing it. I disagree with you on some points, but you made your points nice and clear.
About there being nothing to use Life Aura on, you could use it in the game's multiplayer mode, couldn't you? Granted, the Wii U port might not have the Link Cable capability, but the original has it.
Considering that this game can actually trap you on situations where you're forced to get hit, i don't blame him, and i'm good at this game, but it happens
You should look up one of the included manuals for the game, as it would probably have helped a LOT. Busting Level is important, as well as code-matching your chips in your folder and upgrading it overall. Would have made ur battles much easier, as well as dodging rather than tanking. BN1 is pretty garbo, the others are better in pretty much every way except 4, which is also kinda bad. You gotta treat the game as something separate from the sidescrolling MegaMans, as it is. It's a deck building game made for versus battles with an EXPANSIVE postgame (Battle Network 2 onward, with BN3 and BN6 being the most noteworthy pre Star Force) PLEASE don't give up on this series. They get so much better.
I feel like JIrard like totally missed that there was a Multiplayer component to these games. The point of getting the chips at the endgame was originally so that you could beat your friends. Linking up and fighting your friends was heavily advertised and one of the bigger selling points of the games.
Yup BN6 is great it sucked how they ported/remake the 5th one for the DS but not 6 which is retarded since it's they the best(mostly gregar) bite me!!!!!
6 is a masterpiece as a whole, Falzar has more toys to play with (TomahawkCross and AquaCross babyyyy!!) but Gregar is just cooler with the LinkNavis and Crosses.
Battle Network 3 is WAAAY better than the first. All of your gripes with this game are ironed out and perfected, even. If you revisit this franchise ever, please jump straight to MMBN3: Blue.
The only issue I had with the battle network games is the huge tutorial mode at the beginning. If I had the option to say 'nope i know these mechanics' and just play the game i'd be much happier. I don't need to learn how to battle.
Game 8. Besides, the battle system can have some harder-to-grasp concepts if you don't go through the tutorial, and Dunning-Kruger would ensure a lot of people never go through it even once.
I recall that one NPC tells you about the sword-based program advance skill, which clues the player in on the concept of combining matching chip-types together in order from weakest to strongest in order to get new program advances. Sure, there are a lot of cool and powerful program advances that I'll never discover since I refuse to use guides, but the game does give you enough of a hint to get some use out of the system.
The reward for having that best chip was that you could do one on one multiplayer in the GBA version if you had a friend that had the game. The multiplayer was actually a pretty important part of that game.
Ironically that was the one I had during the GBAs life. I never read while playing games at that time but I remember the game being really fun. I really liked the progression system. Getting money out of battles instead of experience is a good idea. Choosing how you wanted to upgrade in a game was always fun to me. It gave me the choice what I wanted more.
YES! YES! The first BN game was pretty rough, from what I hear. I've only played 5 and 6 (and the current version of the fanmade Chrono X), but MMBN6 is one of my favorite games of all time.
Hey Jirard! I think it’s time to look at the rest of this series, as 3-6 and the star force trilogy are FANTASTIC games. Mechanics get fixed and fun things are added. They are criminally underrated and deserve a fresh look
No. I just played it on the bn legacy collection and the criticisms still hold true. There are a lot of puzzles that are tedious guess work to pad time rather than actually being puzzles. Most notable examples are the passwords with no hints and the battery puzzles which grind the game to a halt while you still have to fight random battles. Thankfully it was the legacy collection so I had access to the max buster which cut out a LOT of chip grinding. I have played 3,4,5, and 6 back on the game and emulators and bn 1 really shows its age in the series. It's enjoyable at times but there's a lot of tedium and lack of good conveyance to the point you have to look up a guide or click every square foot of the game to locate what you're supposed to do. If anything bn 1 was a proof of concept as there is so much that later games added to the battle system and mechanics. For example there are less than 10 unique program advances in the game. Most combos only either give you a stock count of the weapon you used or start a timer for you to spam. Later entries really go deep into asking unique pa that impact the battle
@@JEL625agreed, story was great but the gameplay really suffers from first game syndrome I think one of the things that bogs it down is just how many god damn encounters there are. When I played it on legacy collection it felt like I had at max 15 steps per encounter. Gladly they refined most of these issues in the future games
The first Battle Network is definitely the worst. If you want to try out the series start with Battle Network 3. I tried playing the first one for the first time with the collection as I only had 3 and 5. I couldn’t finish it. It was great for a first entry, but with access to later entries there is zero reason to play it
You asked me to tell you if you did a good job or not, and I mean I'm just one guy on the internet.... You did a great job of highlighting the game and really explaining what it is all about. Ultimately though, the first Battle Network is like Mcdonalds to someone who's never had a Cheeseburger before. Yeah it's cool and a fun experience, but there are better ones out there. Battle Network 3 is fantastic and head over heels better than 1. 2 even is a huge step up from 1. The later games in the series basically build upon 2 and 3, yet often go there own route. Loved getting to take in the nostalgia watching this video, but if you want to really do the series justice, play 2 and 3. Because they are fantastic plays.
44 hours is pretty good! The best (only?) 100% speedrun so far took 10 hours to kill Bass (then 8 more to grind zenny and PAs). The second game is my favorite, a big improvement over the "beta" that is the first game. I know the game well and would love to be a resource should you continue the series. Also, you should look into RNG manipulation ;)
Amazingly, this is one of the few series in history that really does improve with later iterations. I do think you did a great job covering the game, and your complaints were all pretty justified. The first title really shows it's age now, but I do think the later titles are all super strong even by today's standards for a collectable based rpg. Thanks for giving this niche series some attention!
Was wondering if he'd mention the annoyingly high random encounter rate, but then again for someone trying to farm all the chips that's probably actually a plus.
A couple minor corrections. 1: It’s P E T, not pet, 2: ACDC is just a suburb of Dentech city, and 3: Protoman’s NetOp it named Chaud. The Eugene thing is because of a translation mess up since the localization team didn’t take the fact that in Japan uses the family name first. So they changed his family name “Ijuine” to Eugene.
There's a undernet where in some versions of the game, there are cultist, black markets, a graveyard and some navis that say some 'questionable' stuff.
Yeah, it feels like everyone grew up with the original Megaman. I grew up with the Battle Network games and anime. It just doesn’t get the love it deserves compared to the original Megaman.
If you liked Battle Network, you can try the Starforce series, which story sets 100 years later after Battle Network. In fact, the second game of the Starforce series was my first (and only) Megaman game
Joao Vitor, he was rebelling against Chrono, obviously. Jokes aside, starforce wasn't bad. I liked the first one, and the second was ok (from what I remember. Been a while.) But the MMBN series is superior in my mind. Specifically 6 (gregar), and 3 (blue).
As with everyone else saying it, I agree. You should continue the series. MMBN has a high skill cap. Chip strategy and deck building is really big for your playstyle. In MMBN2 there is a "style change" where you actually do evolve a new form based off your gameplay. I'm glad you had fun though!
This is a bad review. I disagree with your opinion. The game was great for its time and was very innovative. It was challenging and a game I couldn't put down once after starting. I feel like you sold out.
I just couldn't get into the Mega Man Battle Network series because whenever I think of Mega Man, I just want a 2D-style platformer instead of a typical RPG with gameplay that is lengthy and complex. :P
Well this is a game with random encounters, annoying enemies, with a random "flee" option, horrible puzzles and a confusing map... i wouldn't blame anyone for putting the game down after Stone man or Elecman's stage, and i love this series but that first game is not for everyone
I said it before and I’ll say it again, if Hollywood wants to adapt a Megaman game they should start with this one. It is set in a somewhat modern world with somewhat realistic characters so they better pull a Detective Pikachu with this one.
Until you complete every game in this series while getting all battle chips and program advances, secret endings and all, then you’ll be a true completetionist because this game series will truest test your skills as a completionist
Oh man, dude. Later games in the series learn so much from its prior mistakes. The series was really created with a lot of love. The fourth one is considered a bit of a bad apple, but the ones after that learned from _that_ as well.
Hub Pie I might have agreed had it not been for 2 things. My nostalgia with 4 and the post game. BN4 was my first, though 2 was my favourite. 5 had these liberation missions, which I didn't like that much,6 was really good as well and then there's 3....I didn't really like 3 for some reason. And going back to 1,there's not much TO it...unless you know Japanese and play Operation Shooting Star. Also nice to see you here,Hub Pie
Hub Pie 4 is pretty bad but the battle system in 1 is so clunky that i have more fun in 4 than in 1 also 3 and 5 are my favorites but 2 and 6 are also cool
Battle Network is a great series, but yeah, the first game is a little rough compared to the sequels. Hope you stick with em
TheLonelyGoomba: "Alone... no one will reply to me... my life is a mistake"
Except for rockman.exe anime it is a terrible show
i actually like that anime .-.
Harry Haryadi did you saw a episode about idol which is heavy that never aired in the west but there was a fuck up CGI filler idol
TheLonelyGoomba sup my mushroom frend
>One Shotted out of nowhere a lot
>Was at 20 health
lol yeah 20 hp in the game is nothing there's enemies that do triple that in damage for an attack
@@nediojon749 late game enemies do 200-300 dmg at times..(bass, and his GX blaster in BN2.)
@@mmm1217 Really? Battle Network 4 Blue Moon was my first in the series and is one of my favorite GBA games. I had no idea it had a bad rap.
@@mmm1217 Lol, Seriously I can get that story wise but in terms of gameplay it's better than 1 at least and not a damn maze.
Oh my god, Battle Network, the most underrated Mega Man series ever, is getting some love on the channel. My life is complete.
Hub Pie I would like to suggest you take a look at Tri Wing, a multiplayer MMBN game currently being developed that recently was successfully Kickstarted. You can follow the active development in Vincent Veak's channel.
I clicked on this video very quickly. Battle Network is my favorite of the megaman series.
Have you seen the Battle Network anime?
I was like: "wtf?!? Jirard made a video on Mega Man Battle Network, holy shit!" *instant like and favorite*
This series is one of my all time favorites :D
Dylan McKaig Same here, 2 & 3 are my favorite ones.
He would have known about this if he just done read and remembered the tutorial instead of just skipped it by mindlessly pressing A.
im actually amazed that he managed to finish the entire game with his folder
ya, i have to say, that is far more amazing than him actually clearing the game.
Warped Sand
Completely ridiculous that he was tanking damage instead of dodging. And why was he moving from a guts wave when there was a hole in front of him?
Fustraiting, but he got through it, so...
I know, right? It seems this guy doesn't really have any sense of strategy or something. Streamlining your chip folder makes things SO much easier.
Agreed, not taking damage and making good folders isnt all that hard so it surprised me how much he complained about the combat.
Life aura and other endgame chips are for when you battle your friends locally.
This game gets real crazy when you’re playing your buddy
You can get life aura from Bass too
This. Drove me nuts during the video so I came to comment the same.
Please play the later games in the series, they get so much better in every single way.
Gotta agree. 2 is just so much better than 1 ever was. 3 was great...5 was awesome, 6 is the best.
I feel...as if something's missing. But that can't be right.
Battle chip challenge, duh. What else could be missing.
They forgot to make MMBN 4 for whatever reason. Hey at least they can count better than Valve, even with a few mistakes here and there.
BN 4 was overall an Ok experience. . . Until you have to play it 3 times over to actually finish the Game!
Or the part where it's glitchy.
I'm still greatly disappointed that there wasn't a 3ds remake
There was a DS port of the first one, with an added crossover to the Star Force series, and an extra chapter, too. Simplified code selection, and some bugs removed. But you never heard of it, it was japan only :
There was a DS version of Battle Network 5 if I recall. May have had both versions on one cart too. Plus there's the Starforce games.
Starforce was absolute trash. Why in the hell was it in 3D?!
Because... they could do that? And so they did? Just like why most games are in 3D now?
In any case those games were at the least on par with Battle Network. I was critical of the change in game perspective as well briefly, but it works fine if you actually give it a try.
Yes thank you of informing me that they could do something so they did. The point being, it was a trash decision, ruined the battle system, looked ugly as all hell, it was slow, difficult to see and in every possible way mechanically and visually the isometric 2D was better. I've tried it, MMBN 1-3 are among my favorite games of all time, that junk on the DS was an abomination.
17:10 "This truly is random" *gets a busting level of 2*
I realize you went into this game relatively blind but in your review you state things that are outright wrong all throughout.
Not only that but he refuses to grab a lot of chips at the same time. No wonder he didn't count his deaths. Probably like 300+ lol.
To be honest, chip drops are still random, even when i got S rank, i still got Zenny, so he is not technically wrong
Yeah... There are many missconceptions .
And more of a reward for completion (like hard mode or a new final boss).
and dont forget, being able to run from battle without using a battle chip
Megaman battle network
one of the most underrated spin off of the Megaman Series
Michael Aiyedun battle network 3 is the best one in the entire series
Michael Aiyedun what about zx
What about X8
I actually prefer the Battle Network franchise, since I absolutely suck at most sidescrollers. And Megaman series is of no exception.
Michael Aiyedun I think that title belongs to StarForce the game that takes place after the Battle Network series in the future.
He's too used to using his buster. Chips are stronger, but he if you can see from his playthrough he focuses mostly on buster.
+Alice Star agree which tis game is not about! which brings back to the point that his review totally missed the mark for this game...
Wow Jirard, you're like, the only person I know who called Chaud by his first name. It's so weird...
HE HAS A FIRST NAME!!? I've been a huge battle network fan for a long time and I did not know that. Kind of sad.
I completely forgot his first name was Eugene so I was taken aback when Jirard said it.
Fun Fact in the dub of the anime they completely erased his first name and just called him Chaud Blaze while the japanese kept his original name as Enzan Ijuuin or Enzan Engine which to be honest would be a kickass name for an international secret police agent.
WHAT THE FUCK!! I've never seen him called Eugene, in the game or Anime. What?
Supernova15 He is only called Eugene Chaud in the first game when he first introduces himself. Every other game just calls him Chaud.
The Life Aura chip was most likely just meant to be used for multiplayer, which you neglected to mention. That's part of the draw in general to collecting all the chips, being able to build stronger folders to beat your friends in battle.
from the sounds of it, i dont think he knew about that aspect of the game.
Lifeaura and DarkAura(which got canned for later games *sob*.)
he mentions multiplayer at 14:20
It's not that hard man, I beat this game as a 12 year old.
Also please play the later entries of the series, they improve EVERYTHING.
yea playing MMBN1 is just scratching the surface!
They also give you new abilities and customization options and it's *amazing*
tbh, the biggest thing I disliked is the change of the internet look.
(3 and above benefit especially from the Navi cust)
6 was a bit too easy at times.
This _was_ the first entry in a new series after all, so you cannot expect it to be perfect, because that is why sequels exist, to further improve upon the foundation.
Nana-Kyoto your like everywhere dang
You'd be surprised how many people tell me that on a daily basis.
Nana-Kyoto I'm taking your comment and applying it to Mighty No. 9.
there is a big difference between a game with some issues and a huge disaster
hint: if the game actually got a bunch of sequels, chances are it was the former
MMBN5DT DS, BABY!!!
A lot lot. Without Folder Synergy, you're dead in the water
Like any TCG; without consistency, you're gonna get bogged down. A lot.
anyone with 'some' experience with TCG get the concept of cutting down the RNG with multiples of the same card , or in this case, chip.
Let's NOT have him play 4 though.
5 is top tier
2 is the best. Tf you talking about?
Double Team is G.O.A.T.ed
I think 4 was the pinnacle of the series but hooooly shit did I love liberations in 5
Never really had a problem with megaman battle network.
Just judging from the scenes he showed in the video
-He missed a lot of his Battle chip attacks
-He would stand in the path of fire without even trying to dodge (most of the time hes just standing still firing his blaster)
-He also never once used a "program advance" (combing chips) or talked about it. (edited. he did talk about it. My mistake.)
I'm sure hes trying his best to get out as many videos as possible to replace the ones he'll be taking down so I don't really blame him for not trying too hard, but I'm just disappointed that a lot of his complaints could of been solved if he just took his time and played a bit better.
Actually, he did talk about Program Advances, but only for a few minutes and he only showed Z-Cannon, nothing more complicated.
Wholeheartedly agree, I can't really enjoy BN1 as much after playing 2/3
Man, he needs to keep going with the series and just... skip 4. He doesn't need to go through 4. No one needs to go through 4.
Wow didnt expect to see pinkreaper here. Love your bn3 lp, sad you never played more battle network games.
Ibcap I only own 3 and 4 and as a general rule I won't LP a game unless I own a copy of it. And 4 is assbutt
They...weren't competing tho. Chaud is an official netbattler while Lan just tries to save the day. (Official is a sort of police In that universe)
Jirard, I'm glad you took Battle Network instead of ZX... Because you NEED to play Zero to understand ZX. Otherwise you'll get confused as all hell.
maxjpz I don't think you'll be confused but the story won't hit as hard
I understand where you're coming from but I want you to really think about the task of completing the first in the Zero series.
Oh, I know that hell. But still, it'd be weird to jump from X to ZX without even glancing at Zero.
Agreed, if he wants to tackle ZX, he should definitely play the Zero games first, especially if he's an X series fan.
maxjpz He could always get the zero collection.
If you want to experience the true greatness of the Battle Network series, you need to look to Battle Network 2.
A brief summary of the series, if you will:
Battle Network: The first one.
5 also gives you the most broke-ass abilities in a series known for giving you broke-ass abilities. So...
And, you've ignored Battle Chip Challenge, which I honestly enjoy for the unique spin on the battle system..
battle network 4 has the best post game, because you can endlessly replay it with everything from your past run, I've done it so many times.
Not gonna lie. Watching him whiff most of the chips he used really made me question his abilities. As well as the fact that it seemed he never learned how to make good folders with similar code chips resulting in him using the buster in about 30-40% of the footage
He couldn't even figure out the charge shot. This video is on par with the Cuphead tutorial.
@@theelike4302 he used the cannon program advance and didn't even use the cannons like what the hell I laughed my ass off
@@Cronosecks I swear how does this guy play classic megaman but is unable to play battle network very well? It’s significantly easier and to me the gameplay is more straight forward while being more unique to each player because of the ability to customize your folder, my first game in the series was battle network 3 and I don’t mean to sound hateful but I swear I played better when I was 9 than he did in this video
I mean if your late in the game you gotta have a letter that you already have as a main.
You know you’ll have to redo this now, especially with how they are releasing the whole network, prepare for all 11 games and for 20-30 hours each, I’m so excited!
morale of the story
The Completionist sucks at J-RPGS?
I wouldn’t call this a JRPG. Reflexes and s are closer to fighting games

It's probably not been played. Sure he has it, but that doesn't mean he's actually touched it.
also BN6 is up there as well lmao
5+6 are clearly the best with 3 not far behind.
sad, this series was one of the best, yes the first was not that great but try the other one, I felt like listening to a guy telling me zubat is a flying pikachu
Why is the chip system at all being compared to Pokémon. Just because you collect things that do things does not make it Pokémon. It's more like Megaman (what a surprise) where you aquire powers as you play.
Thomas Tsang Hell, other than Versions later on, Battle Network is way more like Digimon with having a perfectly communicative program with you.
Thomas Tsang Because if you read the battle network complete works (an art book/ developer interview) it was litteraly inspired by the Yu-Gi-Oh!/Pokémon games
noah solomon Oh wait a minute did they mean the Pokémon card game? Oh shit that actually makes sense.
Thomas Tsang besides haven't you heard that pokemon is duel monsters
But how did he miss the "ADD" function? It's right there in the tutorial. He has to go through the tutorial in the first few minutes of hte game!
Zayaan Nashrid To be fair, ADD is...weird in 1. You only get the 10/15 chips until you actually pick some chips once, then you have to waste turns again.
It's much better in 2/3 when you can dump unneeded chips to permanently extend it for the battle.
Oh damn, I haven't played 1 in so long I forgot that was a thing
Yeah I was watching the video thinking- How did he beat the game using the buster?!? Or cannons?!? I usually found a chip set I liked and rocked it with chips only. Hardly ever used the buster, lol. If I had one complaint about he series, it was the lack of incentive to use the buster. Styles helped with this. And the custom system. I've really got to go back and replay those games! Wonder if we'll ever get a mmbn collection for the 3ds?
Battle network 3 holds a special place in my heart. Had some of the best music and there hasn’t been a combat system like it before or since
You should check out One Step From Eden, it’s a rogue lite that uses this combat style
Mmbn6 came very close to bn3’s strategy. 3 and 6 are very special to me❤️ blue version and falzar especially though as I kid I wanted gregar. I still have 1-6☺️ and still play them often
Well, it's agreed that BN1 is the weakest out of the rest. The sequels get a lot better. Well, except BN4, but yeah...
BN4 is the weirdest thing. It's almost a bootleg version, except made by Capcom of all people. The art style is different, the plot is weird, it feels really disconnected from all other games... And it was actually a best seller game. Like, wtf.
I will say that at least the music in BN4 is pretty good! As for the game itself...had interesting ideas, but...eh...
The main problem is repeating the game 3 times in order to access end game content and the soul crosses that were a bit weak by the end of the game.
BN5 is definetly the most difficult.
I actually really enjoyed BN4 and played it the most out of all of them. I mean, maybe because I had to because of the repeating game mechanic, but still fun for me.
Battle network was my introduction to MegaMan as a kid. I remember when I found out that Mega Man was a robot that I was really confused.
I would imagine ppl were suggesting 3 to him. Maybe 4 or even 5 or 6. But almost 100% whoever recommended didn't mean 1 or 2
to be fair the virtual console version lacks multiplayer
@@skibot9974 ... well, that's silly.

Charles Shoults I beat the game in elementary with 160 HP (didn't know how to gain HP)
@@flameking2178 That's kind of impressive. :0
You sound like a parody of a youtube commenter. It's sad because you aren't.
...I found Battle Network 4 easier than this game and I know you love personal experience fallacies but some people have strengths and weaknesses on certain genre's.
The reason this stays as my favorite series is because the games continues to improve as you progress further.
Why is Chaud's name "Eugene"? I always liked Chaud in Battle Network, but if he was named Eugene, I don't think I would've liked him nearly as much.
It was his first name.
Yeah, Eugene Chaud is his full name, not everyone gets a cool name, probably a way to make up for giving him the best Navi.
Despite the decent name at least he runs a successful restaurant in bikini bottoms where he sells hamburgers along with a sea sponge and a squid.
Jirard's just avoiding trying to pronounce Chaud correctly.
No, I don't know how to say it either.
His Japanese name is Enzan Ijuuin and pretty much everyone in the japanese version called him Enzan.
I always use the buster as my main at least in the first 3 games because the buster is so good in those games
@@bahaedablackaceenthusiast9955 Guts style shredded
@@amadeuszx892 hell yeah it does
You can also flee in the sequel and later, by pressing L on the custom screen (where you draw chips)
Glad to know I didn't miss too much)
Atem Andrew the Star Force games weren’t all that hated, just ended up kinda ignored. Which is disappointing because they all were good games.
"And because I don't understand that the limitations of the chip system enforces strategic choices in battles, I shit on it"
Underrated as fuck, in my opinion the chip system in battle network completely shits on the weapon system in the classic games, bosses aren’t weak to one specific weapon because there are typings and they intuitively make sense
Keep up the good work Jirard and crew!
the battle system rant was bad though
I mean,
If you're going to make a folder with 15 different codes, it's bound to suck compared to a Folder with one Code with great synergy. (Code R baby)
S all the way... Shadowman, Skullman, Stoneman, all S baby!
* code for life
Does Megaman Battle Network have its flaws? Yep.
But so does this little thing called FIRST GEN POKÉMON. And look what *that* grew up to be :P
I'm surprised the Genwunners haven't decided to smite you for saying this yet.
Nich White yeah that's unusual of them
This games mechanics were extremely unique and really good for the time.
Cant wait for the 2nd and 3rd titles, best of the BN series
Gamercoon
My favorite has to be 6, I play it competitively and the Beast Outs, Crosses and LinkNavis make it my favorite GBA game ever, it's a shame the game was massively cut down because Boktai 3 was never localized, but folks over at therockmanexezone made some amazing patches and codes that let you play the full game.
2 is my favorite as well (#Gater4Lyfe), but let's not discount 6. That game is excellent as well.
Real shit, This, was one of the best MegaMan games everrrr
AAAAAARGH! I asked him to play it, and he did!
;)
CactusErebittsu Jesus Christ he commented a winky face and you wrote him an essay lmao
And the post game of 3 is one of the best I've experienced in any game
Just improved on the battle system in many ways that make it more streamlined and less cumbersome after the first one
Eff it you should just play the whole series! Its awesome. Plus you're gonna get a lot of views lol. Respect for fully completing this one though. Even I haven't completed the first one yet.

oh my goodnesss please, Starforce!
darkprotogirl Starforce was underrated in my opinion I vote dangaronpa however.
Why not both? Though I'd like to see Danganronpa first because he just covered BN
This video is kind of bizarre. The focus being so much on the reward not having much use beyond all else and some weird points:
1) Battlechip drops are not random.
4) The chips can be used in VS mode which was and always has been an element of the series
Battle Network 1 isn't the best in the series by any means but this video is really odd to me in the direction it went.
I always wanted you to do this, awesome video! :D
Thanks man

At first I thought this was a harsh review until I realized that you only played the first one. The first one has it's bumps in the road. I started with MMBN3 and loved the game. I found it harder to go back to and play MMBN1, but I still enjoyed it. I think you would really enjoy MMBN3. I think 3,4 and 6 were my favorites. Hope you give the rest of the series a try.

Don't blame the game for your lack of skill
It is, what he's saying there's nothing to use the aura on, since it's the last thing you get
This is what I dislike about Jirard. He always criticizes games just for being difficult when he just needs to stop sucking at them.
About there being nothing to use Life Aura on, you could use it in the game's multiplayer mode, couldn't you? Granted, the Wii U port might not have the Link Cable capability, but the original has it.
Considering that this game can actually trap you on situations where you're forced to get hit, i don't blame him, and i'm good at this game, but it happens
git gud
You should look up one of the included manuals for the game, as it would probably have helped a LOT.
Busting Level is important, as well as code-matching your chips in your folder and upgrading it overall. Would have made ur battles much easier, as well as dodging rather than tanking.
BN1 is pretty garbo, the others are better in pretty much every way except 4, which is also kinda bad.
You gotta treat the game as something separate from the sidescrolling MegaMans, as it is. It's a deck building game made for versus battles with an EXPANSIVE postgame (Battle Network 2 onward, with BN3 and BN6 being the most noteworthy pre Star Force)
PLEASE don't give up on this series. They get so much better.
I feel like JIrard like totally missed that there was a Multiplayer component to these games. The point of getting the chips at the endgame was originally so that you could beat your friends. Linking up and fighting your friends was heavily advertised and one of the bigger selling points of the games.
the virtual console version doesnt have multiplayer

I see your point, but I'd like to counter with #cybeastfalzar FTW!!!!!

6 is a masterpiece as a whole, Falzar has more toys to play with (TomahawkCross and AquaCross babyyyy!!) but Gregar is just cooler with the LinkNavis and Crosses.
You not charging your mega buster is giving me a heart attack!
Crimson Drakenya They finally learned. In Star Force 2...
Which was what...like game twelve or something?
Game 8. Besides, the battle system can have some harder-to-grasp concepts if you don't go through the tutorial, and Dunning-Kruger would ensure a lot of people never go through it even once.
'd rather have it as an option rather than mandatory
Crimson Drakenya Wish Pokémon would add that. I don't need to know how to battle tutorials or catch Pokémon. T.T
Puts cartridge in DS: "Hello welcome to Microsoft Technical Support".
Oh, I get it!
-I don't get it-
What? The DS can play game boy games
I see Zero in the background....! Please let that happen one day!
florestin777 he was planing on doing the spiritual successor or this one for the video. Why do zx before zero? Why?
Maybe he didn't know? That's why I'm glad we have the power of the comments section to let him know.
roguesquadron521 I hope he pays attention to them. I mean you can fight omega and allouette is the resistance leader
Right, exactly. Here's hoping so too.
You think zero.exe is the worst netnavi design
The reward for having that best chip was that you could do one on one multiplayer in the GBA version if you had a friend that had the game.
The multiplayer was actually a pretty important part of that game.
11:11 Those jelly donuts look great!!
Also this game makes me think of superstar saga in concept.
i wish they would bring this serious back i loved it
:)
Come on, Jirard! It’s been 7 months! Now I know you’re a busy man, but it’s been 7 MONTHS!!! Please please complete Battle Network 2!
Unfortunately it’s been 5 years and he hasn’t made a BN 2 video.
You should do battle network 3 blue... Probably the best game of the series. Either that or Cybeast Falzar!
@@thehyperstreamer3258 the secret net
YES!
Basically: he's bad at this game
How So
@@JEL625agreed, story was great but the gameplay really suffers from first game syndrome
I think one of the things that bogs it down is just how many god damn encounters there are. When I played it on legacy collection it felt like I had at max 15 steps per encounter.
Gladly they refined most of these issues in the future games
@@JEL625does it get any better later on? I'm at the very end of BN2 and Gospel is kicking my ass. I feel like dropping this series so bad
The first Battle Network is definitely the worst. If you want to try out the series start with Battle Network 3. I tried playing the first one for the first time with the collection as I only had 3 and 5. I couldn’t finish it. It was great for a first entry, but with access to later entries there is zero reason to play it
I was just the right age when this game came out, loved it
You asked me to tell you if you did a good job or not, and I mean I'm just one guy on the internet....
Antivirus is not enough

Amazingly, this is one of the few series in history that really does improve with later iterations. I do think you did a great job covering the game, and your complaints were all pretty justified. The first title really shows it's age now, but I do think the later titles are all super strong even by today's standards for a collectable based rpg. Thanks for giving this niche series some attention!
I think it needs to be said that the sequels fix a lot of the issues the first one in the series had.
If that's the internet, where's all the pornography?
What do you think Roll's doing when you're not using her as a chip? She and Mayl are obviously camgirls.
There's a undernet where in some versions of the game, there are cultist, black markets, a graveyard and some navis that say some 'questionable' stuff.
Made in Japan. I'm sure they're all "Eighteen."
Ashley Lightheart Those cultists are Cybeast worshippers and made MegaMan go apeshit lol
You must look closer.
When you have only played battle network and not the originals
Also I play mega man zero which was my favorite
Yeah, it feels like everyone grew up with the original Megaman. I grew up with the Battle Network games and anime. It just doesn’t get the love it deserves compared to the original Megaman.
If you liked Battle Network, you can try the Starforce series, which story sets 100 years later after Battle Network. In fact, the second game of the Starforce series was my first (and only) Megaman game
Chrono Rebel 200 years later*
Joao Vitor, he was rebelling against Chrono, obviously.
Jokes aside, starforce wasn't bad. I liked the first one, and the second was ok (from what I remember. Been a while.) But the MMBN series is superior in my mind. Specifically 6 (gregar), and 3 (blue).
@@valletas You sure wasn't one hundred years later?
@@Agent-yw1kj yes
Megaman ZX. So fucking deliciously good and under rated
He sold out years ago, this is just showing it with more limelight.
Well this is a game with random encounters, annoying enemies, with a random "flee" option, horrible puzzles and a confusing map... i wouldn't blame anyone for putting the game down after Stone man or Elecman's stage, and i love this series but that first game is not for everyone
Also the bugs. Fucking GAME-BREAKING BUGS! The coding of this game is worse than BN4.
I hope you review 2,3, and 5. Those are the best in the series.
Elecshield the souls in 4 were probably the best when it came to link cable battles
MMBN 2 & 3 are really the highlights of this series.
I said it before and I’ll say it again, if Hollywood wants to adapt a Megaman game they should start with this one. It is set in a somewhat modern world with somewhat realistic characters so they better pull a Detective Pikachu with this one.
If you're gonna play ZX, you should play the Zero games first. Just trust me
i remember loving this game when i was a kid. i remembered it and looked it up and thats what brought me to this video
Until you complete every game in this series while getting all battle chips and program advances, secret endings and all, then you’ll be a true completetionist because this game series will truest test your skills as a completionist
Frasier is in the Ultimate Megaman Comic at 7:55 on Lan's ass.
Branches75 thanks
Oh man, dude. Later games in the series learn so much from its prior mistakes. The series was really created with a lot of love. The fourth one is considered a bit of a bad apple, but the ones after that learned from _that_ as well.
Yeah.....Battle Network 1 is probably the weakest of the series. 2 is the best, probably
Dude, BN4 is so much worse. That game is incompetently designed and programmed in some instances.
Yea they fixed like everything in Battle Network 2 plus the story isn't just GO STOP WILY it's an original story without Wily which is cool
Hub Pie 4 is pretty bad but the battle system in 1 is so clunky that i have more fun in 4 than in 1 also 3 and 5 are my favorites but 2 and 6 are also cool
Cursedwind: I didn't like the forth game. It was too short!
