    Lyrics:
    Everything is everything
What is meant to be, will be
    After winter, must come spring
    Change, it comes eventually
I wrote these words for everyone
    Who struggles in their youth
    Who won't accept deception
    Instead of what is truth
It seems we lose the game,
Before we even start to play
Who made these rules? We're so confused
    Easily led astray
    Let me tell ya that
    Everything is everything
    Everything is everything
    After winter, must come spring
    Everything is everything

For a queer and closeted southern kid in a homophobic little town, 'The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill' hit me like a revelation. In 1998 I was just starting to understand myself and needed to choose my place in this world. I make no exaggeration when I say that Lauryn's words on that album, and this song in particular, inspired within me a bravery I desperately needed during that time in my life. My story isn't unique in that no matter our background or what streets we call home, there is power to be found in truth. It transcends race, sexuality, gender and every other characteristic we create to differentiate ourselves; there is no 'target audience' when it comes to the power of music to touch lives. Lauryn Hill spoke truth to an entire generation of us who chose to listen. I am grateful I was there to hear it.

We both shared the same love for Lauryn Hill & loved the same kind of music in general like Sun Ra & Miles Davis to which she asked if I was half black or had family, because of my taste in maily 60 & 70's jazz, blues & funk music, lol. Lauryn Hill was HUGE in Japan back in the late 1990s and me and my girlfriends from high school used to try to sing her songs at karaoke. Even though we didn't really understand what she was saying, we knew that she was saying something significant because she was different from any other singers we'd seen before (she was probably the first Black female rapper/lyricist that became so popular in the Japanese mainstream music scene). We looked up to her so much. A lot of Japanese women in their mid 30-40s still do.

    Everything is everything
What is meant to be, will be
    After winter, must come spring
    Change, it comes eventually
    Everything is everything
What is meant to be, will be
    After winter, must come spring
    Change, it comes eventually
I wrote these words for everyone who struggles in their youth
Who won't accept deception, instead of what is truth
It seems we lose the game
Before we even start to play
Who made these rules? (Who made these rules?)
We're so confused (We're so confused)
    Easily led astray
    Let me tell ya that
    Everything is everything
    Everything is everything
    After winter, must come spring
    Everything is everything
    I philosophy
    Possibly speak tongues
    Beat drum, Abyssinian, street Baptist
Rap this in fine linen, from the beginning
My practice extending across the atlas
    I begat this
Flipping in the ghetto on a dirty mattress
You can't match this rapper slash actress
    More powerful than two Cleopatras
Bomb graffiti on the tomb of Nefertiti
MCs ain't ready to take it to the Serengeti
My rhymes is heavy like the mind of sister Betty (Betty Shabazz)
L-Boogie spars with stars and constellations
Then came down for a little conversation
Adjacent to the king, fear no human being
Roll with cherubims to Nassau Coliseum
Now hear this mixture, where Hip Hop meets scripture
Develop a negative into a positive picture
    Now everything is everything
What is meant to be, will be
    After winter, must come spring
    Change, it comes eventually
    Sometimes it seems
    We'll touch that dream
But things come slow or not at all
And the ones on top, won't make it stop
So convinced that they might fall
Let's love ourselves and we can't fail
    To make a better situation
    Tomorrow, our seeds will grow
    All we need is dedication
    Let me tell ya that
    Everything is everything
    Everything is everything
    After winter, must come spring

She was exactly on time yet the average listener wasn't ready for whig splitting knowledgeable, intelligent music. In 1998 when she dropped this gem. The base, low frequency, so called trap music got more air play and just plain & simple the majority of people weren't really ready for positivity because they're so weak, scared, indoctrinated and socially engineered to settle for less... And you know what they say about that right? The moment you settle for less is the day you get what you settled for. Artist like Lauryn, Indie Arie, Esperanza Spaulding were too positive for the negative controllers of the music industry and the mainstream audience. The same can be said for KRS-one, Public Enemy, Brand Nubian, Yaslin Bey, Khalil Ismail, De_La_Sol and many others. The commercial mainstream music industry is a farce. Proof; Frankie Beverly & Maze have never won a Grammy award.

This song, the intro along with Doo Wop helped put a deeper perspective into my life and views in general,it just made me realize just how grown I’ve become as a man and father.
