I feel more than rusty when shooting the 6x6 square format. But here is the vid regardless of the images. Thanks to everyone who voted over on instagram to see the pov vid. Let me know here in the comments if you would find a follow up vid discussing the images valuable or not. Cheers
Nick, that is how many of us react but we easily forget that what we see, is already framed to the point that we can "extract" what we like at first glance. Is not that easy in "the wild" (having a much wider angle of view), and no viewer seems to realize this.
I loved these shots! Loved the on cam video, too, very cool to watch someone else’s thought process unfold. Particularly loved the treebranch/window frame, the ladder, and the enter on sign. Of course I keep thinking of the other shots I liked... I love the well framed ordinary, but when I’m out, I tend to not always see it somehow. The shots all have nice geometry and I love the square format. More!
Michael Prewett hey thanks man! I really appreciate that. The square format does work well for finding balanced geometry in. Ill be exploring the square format more moving forward.
I‘d love to stroll around in this hood. The reflected light and the shadowplay are fantastic. I love shooting 6x6 and I would’ve seen similar things like you but chosen slightly different angles.
dude! I loved every single image except for the very last one on tri-x. This encourages me to go out with the Mat-124G and enbrace the harsh sunlight and strong shadows or even try something completely different like pulling HP5 for extra low contrast photos (I watched the livestream as well yesterday). Thanks for sharing! Also I would love a follow up where you talk about what you don't like about some of the images. Keep it up :)
Marvin Klein hey thanks Marvin! I appreciate that. Would love to see what you shot with the Yashica mat. Fell free to send your results over on Instagram, or tag me when they get posted. And I’m glad you enjoyed the livestream. Those are some of my all time favorite conversations! As of right now I’m planning on recording the follow up vid tomorrow, breaking down my thoughts on the images 😊
Yes, that's the lens! Or "BO/\HA-3" as it's written in the cyrillic alphabet. It's a copy/clone of the Carl Zeiss Jena Biometar 2.8/80 which was the standard lens on the Pentacon Six.
From Tri-X, the image inside with the stairs - brilliant! The portrait of your friend was also very nice. From the HP5+ roll I liked very much the golden characters on the window and the last frame of the roll (the outside ladder). In some I missed the gray tones. I mean, I like very much high contrast B&W but not to the extreme of having only black and white in the frame - the girl on zebra is such a frame.
Nice work, I liked the image of the underground area and the private property sign. I found it interesting the HP5 images had more contrast and I didn't notice the grain. While I am in Toronto tomorrow I plan on burning some FP4+ through the Pentacon might even push it two stops ;)
Some great shots and with one of my favorite camera systems. I would recommend trying a Pentacon Six if you get the chance. Same lens mount but there is just a bit more fit and polish to the design and build quality.
I love the black and white film quality of the photography. I'm expecting to see more videos to learn about Kiev 60 to see you do color film photography and portraits to see what it's like of those who maybe interested with the Kiev 60 ttl. I'm excited to get it soon.
I actually like the images. The exposures seemed to be just how I like them. I am getting ready to start a zine project that I have been thinking about for a long time that is going to require that I push film because of the lighting situation I will be in. I will either be using HP5+ pushed to 1600 or Delta 3200 pulled to 1600. I would like to know your technique on processing HP5+ and TRI-X pushed to 1600. I have not had a lot of luck doing that and tend to stick with box speed or actually pull processing. Those images looked really good from a grain perspective and I would love to be able to get a similar look. What developer and dilution do you use? Any particular agitation techniques? Stop bath or water?
John Gregory hey John! Your project sounds so fun. How I go about pushing HP5... I expose the film at 800 speed. Develop at 1600 in HC110 dilution B. I agitate for 10 seconds every minute. Hope that helps
Nick Exposed Excellent, I will shoot a roll of this weekend. I have been thinking about ordering some hc110. Been using rodinal and have some issues with black specks on my negs. Very frustrating. I have a fresh batch of D76 mixed up and will try it with that then run another roll through the hc110 when that comes in.
Man I was expecting much worse based on your instagram story. I really like a lot of these! The standout for me is the ladder shot. I'm a sucker for ladders much the same way you are with chairs haha
That's quite a tank of a camera, a new part of your arsenal? I don't understand your hesitancy with these photos; the image quality and compositions look quite fine.
Andrew Criswell thanks buddy. Yea these were the first rolls I put through the camera. A tank indeed. I guess it’s the square format. I’m so use to seeing in 2x3 that 6x6 is a challenge to get excited about. 🤷🏻♂️
Hey Nick quick question: when you push HP5 to 1600 are you also pushing when developing? I wanted to try shooting at 1600 as I have some HP5 "laying around" and I just picked up a Nikkormat w/ a Nikkor H 50mm. I'm geeked! Love your videos, they have helped me think about my own creative process and how to execute. Have a great weekend!
This must have been such a heavy setup! The 6x6 format feels odd to me as well, 2:3 ratio is so much more common. Anyways, leaving the comfort zone is always beneficial. Your channel seems to benefit greatly from those photo walks, do then more often! Keep it up
haunchofmammoth thanks so much. I plan on sharing more POVs in the future for sure. And surprisingly the setup didn’t seem too overly heavy while out walking around. I’m sure if I was out for another hour or two I would have definitely noticed. Haha.
I saw a Kiev 60 advertised on eBay a few weeks ago where the seller mentioned the weight (and consequent ability to use it as an improvised weapon if necessary) as a positive selling point. I suspect however he wasn't being entirely serious.
You did fine. Square format never looks right to me either, after shooting 35mm so much. It's a mind game my brother. I'm going to run into you one of these days. I shot in the snow today, at lunch, historic Ypsilanti.
Nick Exposed Nick, I just look for a Cross in 6x6. That is my viewfinder grid in my mind. Im not an expert but I did that when I was painting. You can't miss me, I'm a big man.
Could be interesting to see some feed back why you click the shutter at that specific time or why that scene drew you in. Also more POV vids!! Trying to do the same feel it needs commenting need to get the nerve to talk to camera while I am out and about. Hope all is well.
Dude how’s it going I would like to know how you get the camera I have Holga and it’s been good but the thing is I would love this medium format in order to have more control. So how did you buy it how was the process??
Colin Nugent both are fantastic. I shoot hp5 more frequently because it’s cheaper than tri-x in 35mm when bulk loading. I don’t see a giant difference between the two otherwise. (Obviously there are differences, but it’s not significant enough to really pluck hairs over)
It's way more cheaper than Pentacon Six, not bad anyway, I have shoot several times with this camera with Biometar lens, they have a cool result for a very cheap medium format SLR. Nice review Nick, really Love it.
With Ilfotec DD-X you can EASILY push HP5+ to ISO 3200 (1+4 for 20 min.), and will get great sharpness and shadow details, also in bad light, even at night (within reason). We know that some people don't like DD-X, because they find it gives not enough contrast, but contrast you can always add in post. And grain? There is enough grain for me at ISO 3200. I found that with DD-X HP5+ @ ISO 3200 even matches FP4+ @ ISO 125 when it comes to details! Try it for yourself.
You were a bit too critical I think with these, man. I liked a lot of them! The first stood out for me, as well as the triple window opening thing under the road (?) and I was curious how the row of car shot would come out and was pleasantly surprised on how great that one came out. You did just fine, though, a follow up video would make sense for sure. Can you explain what exactly was throwing you off with these?
Maybe I'm missing subtleties but I like these pictures. With the high contrast you can flip back and forth in your head between seeing pure shapes and seeing recognizable objects. And I'm a sucker for half-reflections and strong shadows. If you do the follow-up I'd like to hear most about what you feel is lacking in these pictures (if that doesn't bring you down). There was one shot you took of a woman walking towards you. I saw some tree branches reflected in the slanted window sill to the right. I was mentally willing you to wait until the girl came closer so you could compose a shot with her sharing the picture frame with the branches but you went for something different and hit the shutter early (2:37 - 2:51). (3:20) I like the pattern generated by the brick wall and the pavement revealed by the light, especially where the two planes meet. (4:12) A lot of purity and clarity in the imagery contrasting with the everydayness of the subject. Like the geometry of 5:15 and shooting the "Private Property" sign like it's in jail is funny. I know it wasn't intended but the reflected telephone poles made me think of the crosses (5:58) on Calvary since the photo came right after one of what I took to be a church doorway. 6:00 was elegant and 6:03 was complex and satisfying.
I meter by eye not off the meter in the camera, so I can manipulate exposure to be consistent with 1600 iso rather than 400 iso. Gives me faster shutter speed and more depth of field to work with. Plus the contrast and grain addition that comes when pushing film stocks. All of which is to my visual preference. Hope that helps.
Not sure what you expect your keeper rate to be, but 1-3 "good" shots from a 120 roll is a pretty good rate. Anyway, I would be interested to here your thoughts on how the Kiev impacted your creative vision (or not), the format, the speed of working, the size, etc. I know you don't do gear shows normally, but gear has an impact on the creative process.
I always push to 1600. For a few reasons. One it gives a nice grain structure (I love grain in my work). Two it allows me to go from shooting outside bright sunlight to indoors dim lit all on the same roll of film. And lastly for the settings I like for street it gives me plenty of dof while still shooting fast shutter speeds. Not really necessary in this instance. But for a lot of my other work it makes a giant difference. I’m a simple man, so I prefer to consistently run with these parameters so metering by eye is a snap.
I use lately zodiak 8b and I’m hooked on it I get 13 frames clean 100% German version goes for 6.000 if only to use zodiak 8b worth of buying this camera body 🍻 cheers
If you're not used to shooting square (6x6) format, it can be difficult to figure out compositions. You've got a whole lot more space to fill than with 35mm or even 6x7. Also, I hate to say it, but in this case shooting at 1600 may have worked against you. With the Kiev, your slower top shutter speed forces you to shoot at the smaller f-stops (f16-f45). You can't play with depth of field near as much when you do that. I tend to shoot 6x6 & 6x7 at ISO 100 so I can control my depth of field. Just a thought.
James furtado yea I’m remembering that I’m not much of one either. Haha. I like it better for certain portraiture. Which is what I got the camera for originally
I actually really like the shots. Why aren't you so thrilled about them? Shoting 6x6 medium format has a very diffrent feel to it compared to 35mm. So cool choices of high ang low lights. It creates grearmt contrast. I have my analog photography vlog too. Stay cool bro.
Thanks for the kind words! Im glad you enjoyed!
I found it interesting how I saw things on the video that I would have photographed that you didn’t! Fascinating.
David Wiewel that’s probably the best part. Haha. Seeing the differences in visual interest
Nick, that is how many of us react but we easily forget that what we see, is already framed to the point that we can "extract" what we like at first glance. Is not that easy in "the wild" (having a much wider angle of view), and no viewer seems to realize this.
The windshields at 4:11 is beautiful
Dav Gats Thank you so much! That was one of my favorites as well. I appreciate the kind words
By far and away the best image for me was the first one with the round table and it’s shadow. Excellent interplay between light and dark!
I absolutely loved that one of the cars lined up! It looked so surreal
Thank you! That’s much appreciated 😀
I love the walk around videos, if you could continue to make these types of videos that would be great!
baysidekicksass I’ll definitely be making more in the future. I have a playlist on the channel with a few others if you haven’t seen it.
I really miss doing a photo walk like this, I just don’t feel inspired lately, a very strange feeling. I love your photos, all turn out really great!
Leica Dad thanks so much dude! I find that just getting out and moving, gets me inspired. Hopefully it will do the same for you.
Nick Exposed thanks, I think that’s exactly what I need to do!
I loved these shots! Loved the on cam video, too, very cool to watch someone else’s thought process unfold. Particularly loved the treebranch/window frame, the ladder, and the enter on sign. Also, sweet tune. Love the jazzhop. 👌
Michael Prewett thanks dude. Same here! Jazzhop is so fantastic
Yes, Do a follow up!
david4god78 thanks buddy! I’ll do one this weekend. 😊
I really like the shot of the ladder leading up to the roof. Great lines!
117Arman thanks so much. That was definitely what drew me too the scene in the first place
Just watched all your POV videos, really enjoyed it. Great channel.
Thank you so much, Kenny! I enjoy making the POV videos, and am glad to hear they are enjoyed :)
Is it weird that I liked a lot of these photos
toofy ahmad haha thanks Toofy! I appreciate that. I guess I have a difficult time liking square format
Nick Exposed I freaking love Square format maybe that’s why I liked them
Had a few Kievs over the years. What a fun, clunky, weird camera... the 30mm fish eye is a wild ride if you can find one!
reid haithcock oh man, the fish eye would be wild for sure. It’s a nice camera.
Love the shot at 4:12, a real inspiration for my POV stuff. Keep it up!
NobeGaming thanks so much! I really appreciate that
I really like those photos! Thinking of getting a Kiev 60
Loved all the pics!
Thank you Nick! Really nice photos! Love to look for shadows
Keigo Moriyama shadow games are my favorite!
Nick Exposed looking forward for others^^ and inspired me! Will do my best to do similar
nice shots brother crisp as
beau pfeiffer recordings 😊 thanks brotha
I‘d love to stroll around in this hood. The reflected light and the shadowplay are fantastic.

nice composition skills, the Kiev 60 is super underrated!

Nice to see such a cool camera in action! Btw, I assume you used it with the Volna-3? Can we expect a review soon?
VicTheVicar Volma 3? Is that the lens? I can’t promise a review. But I will consider it.
Yes, that's the lens! Or "BO/\HA-3" as it's written in the cyrillic alphabet. It's a copy/clone of the Carl Zeiss Jena Biometar 2.8/80 which was the standard lens on the Pentacon Six.
VicTheVicar ah yes. Then that’s the one. A great lens. Seems to be very sharp.

Hey thank you for the kind words. I’ve since sold this camera. So I will not be doing any more videos on it. It’s not a camera that fits my shooting.
I actually like the images. The exposures seemed to be just how I like them. Man I was expecting much worse based on your instagram story. I really like a lot of these!
The standout for me is the ladder shot. I'm a sucker for ladders much the same way you are with chairs haha
Really liked the windscreen shot. What’s that attached to the cold shoe ? I’ve literally just received a Kiev 60 and some HP5
Man I wish you would've caught that fire hydrant at 02:55 - interesting to see how you work with a different format than your usual m2 set up!
The last one of the first roll is worth watching the video over and over again! Is it possible to get a little print of this? 🙌
you still planning to do that indesign tut?
That's quite a tank of a camera, a new part of your arsenal? I don't understand your hesitancy with these photos; the image quality and compositions look quite fine.
Andrew Criswell thanks buddy. Yea these were the first rolls I put through the camera. A tank indeed. I guess it’s the square format. I’m so use to seeing in 2x3 that 6x6 is a challenge to get excited about. 🤷🏻♂️
Hey grand rapids, still want to move there from Wayne county.
Hey Nick quick question: when you push HP5 to 1600 are you also pushing when developing? Хорошая работа...
Why push to 1600 given the light conditions and what you were shooting? What am I missing?
Richard G grain, contrast, and high shutter speeds. I shoot everything at 1600 or above 9/10
Nick Exposed Well, I suspect you had plenty of shutter speed...
Yes! Photo walks are the shit! I looove them and the quality of nicks pov videos is insaneee 🙌
You did fine. Square format never looks right to me either, after shooting 35mm so much. It's a mind game my brother. I'm going to run into you one of these days. I shot in the snow today, at lunch, historic Ypsilanti.
jdebultra I hope we do run into each other! And I agree, I see in 2x3. I find it difficult to get too excited about square format.
Nick Exposed Nick, I just look for a Cross in 6x6. That is my viewfinder grid in my mind. Im not an expert but I did that when I was painting. You can't miss me, I'm a big man.
jdebultra shoot me a message over on Instagram and I’ll get you my phone number. We can set up a time to grab coffee
What's your opinion on HP5 vs Tri-x?
Colin Nugent both are fantastic. I shoot hp5 more frequently because it’s cheaper than tri-x in 35mm when bulk loading. I don’t see a giant difference between the two otherwise. (Obviously there are differences, but it’s not significant enough to really pluck hairs over)
dude shot at 06:02 is amazing i would love to see that printed 100% do a follow up
It's way more cheaper than Pentacon Six, not bad anyway, I have shoot several times with this camera with Biometar lens, they have a cool result for a very cheap medium format SLR. Nice review Nick, really Love it.
Thank you. And yea its definitely much cheaper than the pentacon six, and for the price the camera performs extremely well!
A little off topic, but what city is this?
With Ilfotec DD-X you can EASILY push HP5+ to ISO 3200 (1+4 for 20 min.), and will get great sharpness and shadow details, also in bad light, even at night (within reason). We know that some people don't like DD-X, because they find it gives not enough contrast, but contrast you can always add in post. And grain? There is enough grain for me at ISO 3200. I found that with DD-X HP5+ @ ISO 3200 even matches FP4+ @ ISO 125 when it comes to details! Try it for yourself.

6:00 was elegant and 6:03 was complex and satisfying.
how did u push 2 stops on the kiev, it goes up until 400 iso on the dial
I read "Nick Exploded" and i was for a short moment really worried about try pushing HP5 to 1600
Haha. Thats great!!!
I'm not into the video more than a few minutes but I have to ask why you were pushing the film on a bright day?
I always push to 1600. For a few reasons. One it gives a nice grain structure (I love grain in my work). Two it allows me to go from shooting outside bright sunlight to indoors dim lit all on the same roll of film. And lastly for the settings I like for street it gives me plenty of dof while still shooting fast shutter speeds. Not really necessary in this instance. But for a lot of my other work it makes a giant difference. I’m a simple man, so I prefer to consistently run with these parameters so metering by eye is a snap.
I use lately zodiak 8b and I’m hooked on it I get 13 frames clean 100%
German version goes for 6.000 if only to use zodiak 8b worth of buying this camera body

Hipsterville doesn't look so fun.
I’m not a fan of 6x6 myself
James furtado yea I’m remembering that I’m not much of one either. Haha. I like it better for certain portraiture. Which is what I got the camera for originally
I actually really like the shots. Why aren't you so thrilled about them? Shoting 6x6 medium format has a very diffrent feel to it compared to 35mm.
