Oh, yummy! I first learned about gumbo as a child when I watched 'Princess and the Frog' in theaters. Years later, as a college freshman, I was given the opportunity to go down South for a field trip for one of my college course assignments during spring break of that year. It was my first time down in the Southern U.S.. I went with my professor and my classmates. I remember we did stop in New Orleans and I had the gumbo there. It was delicious! I was so afraid it wasn't gonna taste good, but I'm glad I was wrong. I would make my own stock out of crabs, but I can't make it as my mom has a shellfish allergy.
Oh my god this made me feel so old. My first thought was that the movie came out only a couple of years ago then I realised it was over a decade ago now 💀
so lucky. I am from Asia and I have never had Gumbo in my life but I always wish to try it. It's not available anywhere here so someday Im gonna have to make my own.
I like how he taught the rich history of this dish. I love gumbo, either ya ya or seafood way. So glad he showed me how to cut the roux time into 5 minutes! 🍲
This makes a Southern Louisiana boy proud. That’s EXACTLY how ya do it! I’m not a big okra fan myself, so I leave it out. But man oh man, I love me a good bowl of gumbo.
Very well done! Techniques and advice are exactly right. I grew up in New Orleans, and now I live in Paris, France.. Gumbo has been a great way to remind myself of the taste of home since the pandemic hit. I usually go for chicken and sausage gumbo (rather hard to find Gulf Coast Blue Crab here). But we do have Okra. I cannot stress this enough - make your own stock! For gumbo yaya, just roast a whole chicken then throw in the bones and whatever's left from the chicken with some veggie scraps and seasoning. Then proceed exactly as the video says. Roux, Trinity, seasoning, stock, sausage and chicken. So good, I've never seen someone have only ONE bowl.
I made gumbo 4-5 times in my life and never ever I have used blue crab shells to make stock. This is gonna elevate my game 10fold!!! What a great video.
Wow I ❤️ gumbo! Used to make it at a restaurant I worked @. This version is a little different from what we make, the Filé powder was added in not sprikled. So excited to try this version. 😋 Thank you!
I remember when I stayed in Louisiana for about 2 years I was soooooo hooked on the gumbo I had to have it several times a week if not everyday every way I tried was different but was so good I love how he breaks it down on here how to make it with all those flavors thanks o much all the from da SC xoxo 👏🏾👏🏾👌👌💯💯🙏🏾🙏🏾💕💕!!!!!!
I'm Brazilian and I had no idea what Gumbo was until I read a book called Rebel by Beverly Jenkins, it's set in New Orleans after the Civil War and Drake's favourite dish is Gumbo, he talks about it all the time. Anyway, really enjoyed watching the video!
Growing up in Calcasieu Parish, with family on the Gulf in Cameron Parish, we would do seafood gumbo mainly. We’d even pop oysters in it right before serving. SO GOOD! My grandmother would put the filet in the rough. Makes a difference!
Had my first and only bowl of gumbo at an airport in texas. I realize it probably wasn't 1/2 as good as real deal but boy was i impressed. Will def be trying this recipe out! Thank you
I loved this. As someone who grew up in New Orleans, this connected with me so much. I didn't know gumbo had native American roots to it. My dad always uses the Holy trinity of veggies when he cooks. My aunt made some seafood gumbo once and it was delicious. My family usually eats the ya ya version though. I definitely want to try this recipe out. Thanks for giving me a piece of home.
I'm from Chicago I ordered the blue crabs from Louisiana to make this. And followed everything and made twice the amount from here my only struggle was making that roux dark. It was medium dark but it was so delicious still!
Once you taste it, love takes on a whole new meaning! My first taste of gumbo was in my teen years at a little tiny shack restaurant in New Orleans. It was also a history lesson for me as the elderly lady who cooked the gumbo was finishing for the day and felt compelled (her words) to sit with us and explain the soul of what we were eating! That has been over 40 years ago and I have never had gumbo that good again even in New Orleans. I have also never forgotten the lessons that beautiful soul who made that gumbo taught this young white girl!!! I don’t know if she ever realized how profoundly she touched my life (probably did, but I never got the chance to tell her as I didn’t realize it myself until later in my life). All over a bowl of gumbo! I hope you get to experience that!
one of the most simple "Gumbo" in germany and austria is called Brennersuppe, translated into burned soup if you will. You just do an extra thick roux and season it with vinegar. Thats it. From there you can go and add more ingredients if you want, but plane flour and vinegar is a hundrets of years old recipe in rural areas
Okay thank you, I’m going to try making the Gumbo Yaya version bc the hubs doesn’t like seafood (blasphemer), and I have celiac so I’ll swap wheat flour for gf flour (rice flower and tapioca will probably make a good roux). Wish me luck!
Thank you for making homemade stock like a normal person using scraps!!! It pains me to see all these videos using whole veg and throwing it out at the end! Can't wait to try this recipe, thank you so much
Man this is the most comprehensive gumbo how to Ive seen yet! Thank you for properly representing one of our most beloved dishes, much love from the Flatts!
Good evening and thank you for this wonderful moment that you make me live on your channel. It's really friendly and respectful. I can't wait to do it. This recipe is to make it at my home, I want to congratulate you and thank you but also thank all those who contribute to this superb channel and those who come to watch it. With my sincere gratitude and compliments with all my friendship. Nice week ahead. Aimé fron France
I'm from Port Arthur where we had crayfish festivals and crab/shrimp 🦐 gumbo. And yes to Okra, home grown of course. Thanks for your video and memories that it helped revive.
I’m not from Louisiana, but I am the person from Orange and a small town called Bridge city, which they have different kinds of occasion, food and looking at this kind of made me homesick
I LOVE this video, and I love the narrator (Chef Kenneth or Chef Will?) here. Anthony Bourdain said that New Orleans is the most important city for American cuisine. He's 100% right. It's also the ONLY place in the World where you can get this kinds of food at this level. I've had other gumbos and soft-shell crab jumbalayas in the North, and it was AWFUL. Back in January 2020, I was in NOLA for work with many co-workers. I didn't have one bad bite of food my entire 5 days down there. It was amazing.
I'd never heard of Gumbo ever in my life. Thank you internet! I'm from the Uk so all I need is sassafras leaves (whatever they are) and I'm ready to go.
Guys I made this with marinated chicken, air fryer, chicken breast and prawns with chicken stock and all the steps in the video, ITS amazing recipe banging
🗣🗣🗣 I TRUST IT! Yes, gumbo can be made wrong AND THIS IS MADE RIGHT! I'm a gumbo lover and grew up eating this with my Nawlins family and this is it! I'm use to making mine with a chicken stock but I'm definitely trying it next time with a seafood stock. Thank you TASTY for this gem!
And I love how detailed and yet simple this recipe is. One question I have is what do you do with the discarded blue crab and shrimp that you used to make the stock? Do you put it in the gumbo or is it just trash at that point? It looked like you used fresh crab for the gumbo so I was curious.
I have watched many videos on Gumbo, this is my favorite. I definitely. Learned a few new tricks and ingredients. Now being how I live in Washington state I'm going to pass on getting blue crab when I have fresh Dungeness available by just placing out my crab pots. I might even add some clams at the end with the shrimp. But boy howdy this looked great. One last thing. I really enjoyed the voice of the gentleman who did this. Great story teller. Well done. 🌤👍😋🦀🦐🍻

Make it with chicken and andouille sausage! That's what I do for my shellfish allergy 😁
SAME! About the gumbo thing, not the shellfish allergy
Oh my god this made me feel so old. My first thought was that the movie came out only a couple of years ago then I realised it was over a decade ago now 💀
Im from Fiji, i as well learned Gumbo from Princess and Frog.
Chicken and sausage is the way to go.
Wow right in the childhood. Every time it got cold my grandma would make my siblings and I a nice warm bowl of Gumbo ☺️💜
can't eat it any other time
Fyaza

I love okra so much, I don't even mind the slime. It's so good. And nothing beats a homemade roux.
This was one of the best videos I have ever seen, well done.
This is above and beyond, man! 5 min roux! How to make your stock and seasoning! This is a treasure!
Growing up in Calcasieu Parish, with family on the Gulf in Cameron Parish, we would do seafood gumbo mainly. We’d even pop oysters in it right before serving. SO GOOD!
My grandmother would put the filet in the rough. Makes a difference!

Thank you for the rue tip!!! The recipe is FABULOUS
It seems yummy.
I am from Africa and we cook gumbo differently. In our dish, okra is the main ingredient.
As someone from New Iberia, LA this man is doing it right
Delicious 🤤 I will try in Brazil 🇧🇷 we eat lots of okra

I'm going to make your version of seafood gumbo. Thanks for the helpful info. " You don't need to eat slimy okra." The speaker is funny. 🤣lol

Love the explanation of the history and the dish itself. Very well taught.
Very nice presentation, about a dish that has so many riffs. Good basics though. Of course, I don't do it that same way.
This bowl is so rich in flavors that I will eat my phone 😋
And I love how detailed and yet simple this recipe is. One question I have is what do you do with the discarded blue crab and shrimp that you used to make the stock? Do you put it in the gumbo or is it just trash at that point? It looked like you used fresh crab for the gumbo so I was curious.
