A hot summer's day at Carluke 23-07-14

  • On the day that Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games would open, I paid a visit to Carluke in South Lanarkshire, between Motherwell and Carstairs on the WCML in Scotland. The temperature on the day was 28 degrees C which got the Games off to a good start.
The lines through the station feature super elevations and switching curves running north on a downgrade and south on an upgrade. This results in some fast northbound running and plenty of effort as freight trains get to grips with the gradient.
For anyone who has not paid this station a visit I have tried to give a flavour of the kind of varied traffic that can be expected by including some EMU runs that I wouldn't normally include.
The first clip features two DBS class 66s heading north working 6s36 Dalston - Grangemouth empty tanks. This is normally a single 66 working but the second unit was DIT and unusually there were four containers tacked on to the end of the consist.
Next we see two WCR class 57s on 1z45 a Hereford - Dundee charter.
There then follow a variety of EMUs including classes 318 320 and 380.
Lastly we have the Hunterston to Sellafield nuclear flask run hauled by 37667 and 20302 making quite a sound as they powered up the gradient.
Finally, I must add my congratulations to all the home country teams who excelled themselves and provided great entertainment and enjoyment to all those who either visited the games or watched them on TV - a great follow on from London 2012.
    Enjoy!

Thank you for your comments Bob; always appreciated. We had a lovely spell of weather for 10 days which was great to start off the games with, and I thoroughly enjoyed filming that day. Unfortunately there were a few 'no shows' which would have helped the video, but all in all it was a good day. Best wishes. Ken

A great selection of rail clip from La Costa Del Carluke Ken. What a super summer day that seemed to be.
A nice variety of traction that you captured and the station look a good video location with that double bend. Very enjoyable viewing. Regards - Allan.

Thanks for your kind comments Allan, yes we really knocked it off with the weather that day! Costa del Carluke sounds good and even I ventured out in my shorts - not a pretty sight - but very necessary that day! I agree that the track layout lends itself to good shots and perhaps we could visit if you can manage up here. The Scotrail Day tripper ticket is excellent value at £11.50 for a whole day in the Strathclyde area, so we can jump on and off trains at will. Best wishes! Ken

Smashing Ken. Good cops at start and end but I also like to see the old livery of the units. Thanks.

Thanks Keith, I was certainly pleased with the variety on display. It would have been better if two non runners had turned up. Thanks for your comments. Ken
