I have the X1S and I think it’s a sleeper first microphone. I don’t use it as much anymore and you really need to be careful with those switches - I’ve done full recordings with the pad accidentally on - but I’ve never had any complaints from clients when using it. It’s very solid, I think it competes with some mics closer to $200-250 range.

I used the SEx1 for VO for years. A good choice when you want more mid range to cut through the mud. Surprising build quality and sound for the price. The shock mount, which also works with some other SE mics, is alot of plastic... but it works remarkably well. Careful with that pop filter. With no edge guard and sharp edges it doubles as a pizza cutter. Now... about the P120, or any early Perception mic from AKG. I have one. It sounded great... until it stopped working. Just went dead. If you have a Perception that is BABY BLUE, not the current black bodied models, AKG will NOT repair it. Sent it in, they sent it back. That's disappointing, but at that price point waddya expect? It seems the current BLACK Perceptions are holding up much better. If you're shopping on the Bay, beware BLUE Perceptions. Great review.

0:40 agree with that point. I had same issues with pad or HPF on too :D
since then I double check both switches before recording.
Aiden, may I suggest you an option for review? Recording Tools MC-900 (costs 110 euros). RecTools -- is German company that was originated by one of Oktava's engineers migrated to Germany. And... there is an opinion that this mic sounds close to TLM103.

I love this microphone. This is the microphone, I tested and just instantly fell in love with it.
On top of that, this is the microphone that gave me my first voice acting paid gig in an indie video game. Thanks for the review btw pretty informative comparison

It's pronounced sExi because the mic has a thicc bottom underneath that grill if you know what I mean.

Hi,c an you help me choose a microphone? I need a microphone for vocals, I'm choosing between P120 and SE x1s, which one is more suitable?

I think that this is an "okay" mic. I prefer the Dynacaster for broadcasts and the V7 for everything else. This seems like a middle child that doesn't know where it fits in.

i have a silly question , I want to purchase sm7b to record songs (vocals) , so my question do you need a vocal shield behind it or not ? , also do you need a pop filter same as the condenser mic ?

hey, it's not a silly question and no you don't need a shield but a pop filter will help

I don't know about this comparison, because the X1S is way pricier than the p120.
I would have tried the p220 and/or the X1A to have a closer comparison in terms of price.

      @@DarkCornerStudios oh ok got it.
Maybe it's because I'm in Europe so I may have different prices.
On Thomann the x1s is 159€ and the p120 is 89€.
But anyway, for this price, the noise level is great on the x1s imo. And I didn't know this mic so thx. 🙂

i am listening on a tv and I can hear more of low end with the P120.... the SE sounded empty by comparison to the P120 to me.

You found one without a shock mount? Darn -- both of mine have them and that's one reason I don't use them: too bulky. I bitched to SE about that. Guess they listened to me! It's a decent buy but more and more I wind up using the new CAD e100sx in the studio and the SM58 with fethead and windscreen. The X1S is a good buy. That said, I have a stable of microphones and yet I seldom use them. I often have to set up on location to record and the SE58 and Fethead just simply works. Sometimes, like last weekend, I used an AKG D5 with Fedhead for the guest mic. Not bad for remote work. Why Fethead? The boost in gain cuts noise and gives a little vocal "oomph" in terms of body and presence.
Yesterday, I was at a concert venue near Shure's hq and the SM58 was everywhere (as were some SM57's with the Chicago Symphony). The vocalist, a Broadway actress apparently accustomed to a wireless mic taped to her, struggled a bit to get used to the SM58 on a floor stand, occasionally going a bit off axis. I doubt most regular people didn't notice but us broadcasters . . . . . . . . .

They are sold in combination packs with the shockmount or just with the clip. Probably the reason why you had one with the shockmount.

I really don't understand why everyone says that x1s is higher than p120, in this video there is no difference at all
