We provide wine tasting events for people and poured a Chianti Classico after a 3-glass Pinot Noir flight (avg bottle price of $45). Our audience thought the Chianti was at least $50 - but it was only $12!! Great video!!

I don’t drink enough Chianti but I’m a huge fan of Brunello di Montalcino. Recently I had a Castello di Querceto Chianti Classico Riserva 2016 and was surprised that it held its own next to a Fuligni BDM Riserva 2016.. at a fraction of the cost! Love that you’re a fellow Sangiovese fan, cheers man! 🍷
@@drmatthewhorkey I just went to get a bottle of Riecine, surprised I passed it so many times at the supermarket aisle! Thanks for the recommendation 🍷
Love Chianti Classico. The ones that are made in the traditional style where they are aged in botti with lots of herbal notes are the ones I like. I’ve been trying Vino Nobile di Montepulciano lately, mainly Contucci and Dei and they taste too fruity to me.
I love the way you go off on Chianti. And that was an amazing line up. I’m a Pinot guy, so sometimes I find the tannins are a bit grippy for me but I still love Chianti . And I have discovered a way to make them more accessible, earlier. I buy them in halves now. Works a treat. @@drmatthewhorkey Nope, I thank you! Thank you for sharing your wine knowledge with us. spent a lovely two weeks in Italy 20 years ago tasting various wines from Tuscany. The best happened to be from the campsite we were staying on. 5 euros for a Chianti Classico Riserva! The winery was called Villa Trasqua. Never seen it since. The standard Chianti was 3 euros!
@@drmatthewhorkey excellent. It will be interesting to see what you think of them. I'm guessing 15 euros or so now for the Classico or $20. Still good value and a beautiful vineyard site. Did you go there?
Staying in Panzano in October. Last trip found 2 wines I really liked. Castellina Castellare and a very interesting Ca’ di Pesa. Both Chianti Classico. Looking forward to finding new wine experiences in October. Thanks for the videos! Bob
Great video as always and happy to see that you are getting some much deserved views. I agree with you that Chianti goes great with tomato based dishes but personally I like them even more with mushroom pasta, something about the interplay between the acidity and savouriness just does it for me. Also I'm a big fan of the Isole e Olena, it's pretty much my go to wine for a nice Chianti, easy to get in my market and I was never disappointed.
Oooooohh, GREAT call on mushroom pasta. I love tomato based pastas so much and I forgot how good CCs would be with truffle or portobello mushroom dishes. Thanks for your comments and supports. I am hoping for a BIG 2023...

@@drmatthewhorkey I've had some nice wines from Carmignano. Also, the Maremma area is busting out some nice wines. I'm in the process of looking into importing wines from Toscana to the states. I tried a wine called Governo Toscano IGT which uses the same process as Amarone on the Ciliegiolo grape. I fell out of the chair. Are these 95+ wines, no. Probably 90-93 but extremely drinkable, with the right amount of tannins, fruit and balance of acid that lets you know you're are drinking something that's above average.

New subscribers here. Great channel. We love wine and have done several RUclips travel wine videos. Like you, we love Chianti Classico. Villa Cafaggio is one of our favorites from Panzano.
Great vertical lineup! I'm not too surprised that a few wines made it above Isole e Olena as I find their standard Classico is a bit pricey for what it brings. In terms of affordable Classico Riserva, I've found most stuff from Mazzei, such as Ser Lapo and Fonterutoli, are always very high quality for the money. Great video once again!
Thank you Matthew for such wonderful video! You talked about great wine within my budget. I myself only work at a fast food restaurant and still want to enjoy some great wine. Wonder if you can suggest one or two cabernet sauvignon $30-$50 a bottle. Thanks again for the video!
I like a Cabernet with Anice taste, do you have some easily available wines to suggest? The last best example I had recently was 2019 Faust Salvation Napa Valley Cabernet. Hard to find this vintage now. Thanks Matt for any suggestions you can provide.
Thank you Matthew! Love your content. Villa Puccini CC Riserva 2018 is on the menu tomorrow night. About 16 bucks for a Riserva ... How is that possible? Looking forward to it. Been drinking Bordeaux for the last couple of years almost exclusively except for Chateau Neuf and Sancerre. Sancerre is a must try btw. But, you made me put in an order for some Chianti Classico. Will be my first time trying a CC.
@@drmatthewhorkey Will pair it with lasagne. Yes, my first CC! Can you believe it :-). Never got around to it. I'm a francophile, what can I say. I guess that will all change now ;-).
Great video again, Matthew! Thank you for providing more good wines to get in to debt for haha. Just a quick question.. could you compare the Rosso's of Montepulciano and Montalcino to the Chianti Classico? What different notes can you get on those compared to the Classico, or vice versa?
Recently had the 2019 Castellare Chianti Classico and it was a beauty. Leaned toward the Pinot Noir style but had excellent intensity on the palate…check it out!
I prefer more fruit forward wines, especially red fruit forward not so much the darker fruits, but Im relatively new to wine and the first wine that I had that wow'd me was the Donna Laura Ali, which is a Sangiovese based wine which was only like 11$ and I'm curious are the Chianti Classico Annatas generally more fruit forward since its not aged in oak as long compared to the Riservas and Gran Seleziones or is that not true?
It depends on the producer, part of Chianti Classico, and vintage. In general, I think Chianti Classico annatas could be fruity enough for you while introducing some earthy notes.
@@drmatthewhorkey okay thanks, I’m not against earthy notes and funk etc.. I smoke cigars so I encourage complex profiles with earthiness, leather etc but yeah I was just curious.
I have a small (very small) collection of Chianti. I want to add at least a half case this Christmas: either (or both of) Castello La Leccia, 2019 or Fontodi, 2019. The La Leccia is considerably cheaper. Have you tasted either?
@@drmatthewhorkey Darn it! I shall just have to settle for being a little poorer this Christmas but thanks for the tip. It's £22.50, so I might settle for three instead of six.
Last night tasted CampOlive Barbera d'Alba Superiore Paitin Neive Italy: Had the most subtle nuance of oak and spice, very smooth with fleshy texture; the overall lingering mouthfeel was an impressive 13 seconds and I strongly agreed using WASM that the structure and body was light to medium bodied. Good balance with acidity. WASM price pointed the wine at $34.57 with an overall score of 90.96 and a QVR score of 1.72%. Since I paid $33.99, WASM indicating that price point is about right, but like you always looking for those value wines that are hidden gems. Do you think you will transition to Barbera from Sangiovese as your favorite varietal in a few years?
With points so tight between the bottles, it really goes down to the style one likes. But did I spy the Isole having a lower shoulder level than all the rest? 😆
That is totally right for this and all wine, trusting your own palate. Hahaha no it’s exactly the same as every bottle, the glass is just clearer and the light hits it the right way. I don’t taste beforehand and pull the same amount out of every bottle with Coravin. The blind tasting videos are just as exciting and educational for me as they are for viewers
I love sangiovese too ! Tuscany has to be one of my favorite region for wines. In chianti classico i like Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico Riserva and Castelvecchi Lodolaio. For more expensive chiantis i've enjoyed badia a passignano gran selezione and bindi sergardi's chiantis.
As one of the truly great wine growing regions Chianti Classico has long suffered from massive swings in quality and provenance. From $4 buck-chuck to some of the finest reds, the range of outcomes is unacceptable. They ought to learn from Montalcino’s success and lead with provenance and terroir. 100% Sangiovese and leave the “foreign” grapes outside the sub zone. Introduce new and comprehensive rules and regulations for quality. I’d love to see a blind tasting Chianti Classico vs. Rosso di Montalcino. They are in a similar price point though I find the latter often performs better, especially on clarity and inherent complexity of fruit.
@@drmatthewhorkey Would never infer you are a rookie; however, pertaining to direct translation, Blood of Jupiter, difference? "Most people think that Jove and Jupiter are the same person, but there is actually a big difference between the two. Jove is the king of the gods in Roman mythology, while Jupiter is the king of the gods in Greek mythology. They both have a lot of similarities, but there are also some big differences."
"For example, Jove is often depicted as an old man with a beard, while Jupiter is usually shown as a young man. Jupiter is also associated with the planet Jupiter, while Jove is not." I realize that some have drawn a congruent parallel but as someone approaching their mid 40's surely the direct translation of Sangiovese is Jupiter not Jove

Really liked this one, I’m going to have to grab a couple bottles of that Istine! Do you have a video on some of the best Bordeaux blends from Napa under $50 if not is that something you would consider making
Niceee and enjoy, just know that the wine is tannic. There are some videos coming up with Cali Blends under $50 😁
New subscribers here. Great channel. We love wine and have done several RUclips travel wine videos. Like you, we love Chianti Classico. Villa Cafaggio is one of our favorites from Panzano.
Nice to see fellow travelers and CC lovers. Yes, very nice wines as Panzano is a special place.
Thanks again! Yes they make a lot of wine and produce some affordable stuff.
Some of my favorite Chianti Classico’s: Pruneto, Barlettaio and of course Montefioralle.
Ohhhh nice selection... You'll see more in some upcoming videos!
Great job!!! Thank you for all the knowledge. Fernando Fernandez SR.
Thanks for stopping by!
Felsina just makes dang good wines, year in and year out!
Agreed!
I've never tried chianti, a based on your descriptions, it sounds like our palets are pretty aligned. I'll give it a shot.
Let me know how you like it! Make sure it’s ‘Chianti CLASSICO’ and not regular ‘Chianti’.
Awesome video!
🙏🙏🙏
Great show on Toscan Gem.
Thnx
thanks for coming to check it out!
He said suckling style. I literally laughed out loud. 🤣🤣
You get respect for picking up on that little joke 🤪
Young Italian wine nearly always needs extras air time
Agreed and good wine is ALWAYS changing...
@@drmatthewhorkey U so right!
Spent 3 hours, on half a botrle of Dingač Special Selection. It was a cameleon in a possitive way.
Same good young Greek Red Wines, more air time really opens them up and makes them dance on the tongue
Thank you Matthew for such wonderful video! You talked about great wine within my budget. I myself only work at a fast food restaurant and still want to enjoy some great wine. Wonder if you can suggest one or two cabernet sauvignon $30-$50 a bottle. Thanks again for the video!
Thanks! I would go with value Bordeaux in your case - here’s a good place to start ruclips.net/video/Q4Yag_wk1bs/видео.html
@@drmatthewhorkey Thanks for the prompt suggestion just in time for the holidays. Much appreciated your help!
I like a Cabernet with Anice taste, do you have some easily available wines to suggest? The last best example I had recently was 2019 Faust Salvation Napa Valley Cabernet. Hard to find this vintage now. Thanks Matt for any suggestions you can provide.
Nicceee, Stags Leap District cabs might be to your flavor
Thanks. I will check them out. Cheers. @@drmatthewhorkey
I'm not the biggest fan of Chianti Classico but Monteraponi is SO GOOD!!
That’s a helluva producer
Thank you Matthew! Love your content. Villa Puccini CC Riserva 2018 is on the menu tomorrow night. About 16 bucks for a Riserva ... How is that possible? Looking forward to it. Been drinking Bordeaux for the last couple of years almost exclusively except for Chateau Neuf and Sancerre. Sancerre is a must try btw. But, you made me put in an order for some Chianti Classico. Will be my first time trying a CC.
Thanks… wowwzass your first CC??? Enjoy them and they taste better with pizzas and tomato based pasta dishes
Both are sometimes fruitier and often less tannic than CC
@@drmatthewhorkey Okay, thank you:)
Definitely recommend Castignoli, great producer that uses 100% Sangiovese which provides the ultimate feeling of Chianti in my opinion.
Niceee recommendation!
Felsina needs time
Superb
Badia just drinks beautifully
Agreed on both
Recently had the 2019 Castellare Chianti Classico and it was a beauty. Leaned toward the Pinot Noir style but had excellent intensity on the palate…check it out!
It is a great wine! Just didn’t have it in the tasting
You’ll love CC then!
Ooh, I’m heading to the store tomorrow for some Beaujolais, if you are too feel free to go for a video 🎉🎉
You really think videos like these get done overnight 🤣😂🤣🤣😂😂😂
I actually got a bottle of the 2019 Felsina a couple of days ago. I didn't try it yet. I'm also a big fan of sangiovese.
Ohhhh nice, hold onto it for a little bit if you can. Way to go team Sangio!
I have a small (very small) collection of Chianti. I want to add at least a half case this Christmas: either (or both of) Castello La Leccia, 2019 or Fontodi, 2019. The La Leccia is considerably cheaper. Have you tasted either?
Fontodi 19 is stellar and in this video: ruclips.net/video/2JJkzm7enQE/видео.html
@@drmatthewhorkey Darn it! I shall just have to settle for being a little poorer this Christmas but thanks for the tip. It's £22.50, so I might settle for three instead of six.
😂🤣
👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you sir… stay warm up there!
Big Chianti fan here🎉
I feel like I could drink Chianti Classico all day, everyday!
2019 huh? I’ll have to give it a try!
Happy hunting!
I’m a big fan of Barbera and that Paitan. I’m especially a fan of the Nizza DOCG
@@drmatthewhorkey In Piedmont correct?
Yes it’s a special part of Piemonte for high quality Barbera
With points so tight between the bottles, it really goes down to the style one likes. But did I spy the Isole having a lower shoulder level than all the rest? 😆
That is totally right for this and all wine, trusting your own palate. Hahaha no it’s exactly the same as every bottle, the glass is just clearer and the light hits it the right way. I don’t taste beforehand and pull the same amount out of every bottle with Coravin. The blind tasting videos are just as exciting and educational for me as they are for viewers
Great as usual....not a fan of the Istine logo...if I didn't know better, I would pass on just the looks...crazy, eh?
Not crazy at all, labels do matter :)
Ohhhh some nice wines. Always nice to see a fellow Sangiovese lover.
What’s with the fill level on the Isola
All of them are the same… I coravin the same amount out of every wine, some bottles are darker than others
men please make a video tasting the Seggio al Tesoro 2016 and Volpaia Chianti Riserva 2016 ... ufffff wowwww spectacular
Very good!
I wish it was easier to find over here in France
But you have Saint Chinian!
That’s a good comparison for sure. Unfortunately, dealing with the Montalcino Consorzio hasn’t been so fruitful for me 😂🤣
Nozzole Chianti Classico Riserva?
not in this lineup
Without researching/looking up on internet do you know what Sangiovese translates to in Latin?
Blood of Jove… I’m not a rookie 😜

Thank you and enjoy!

Tomato and tomato sauce with Chianti? 😮
Yessss
@@drmatthewhorkey, I know 😉

I can’t include every producer…
who the juice has got time to age wine , seriously just drink &enjoy life is short
That’s the beauty, wines can be enjoyed now or matured in the cellar!
