    I always warm my Easiyo thermos with boiling water while making up the mix. Then replace that cooled water with fresh boiling water when mix is ready to put in the thermos. I have the old white thermos. Was given it second hand roughly 20 years ago. I use a third of a sachet with full cream milk powder. Also make labnah from my yoghurt to use instead of cream cheese.

    Really enjoy your videos! Thank you 😊 we now use this method to make yoghurt and its saved us a lot. My husband is lactose intolerant, thankfully they make lactose free yoghurt and milk (regular milk with lactase enzyme) but its very expensive. I've had some success mixing 2 tbsp of Jalna lactose free yoghurt with uht LF milk. It tastes great but a bit runny. Going to try adding the calcium drops next to see if it thickens up more

    Thank you and very nice video. I like your idea to freeze freshly made live yogurt in a cube as your next yogurt starter. BTW, anytime anything, i.e. your immersion blender, is introduced to directly deal with the milk, it must be thoroughly sanitized unless you don't mind to introduce more pathogens into your milk.
    I once made my own simple incubator out of a big plastic container (12" in diameter with a 10" lid and about 15" tall). Inside the chamber, I layered it with 1" thick styrofoams and whose surface was then glued with a layer of thin aluminum foil (mainly for heat reflection purposes). So, the inner compartment would have a 10" diameter (the same as the lid) and still big enough for me to put several heating pouches filled with hot boiling water and a gallon container filled with warm milk inoculated with live yogurt. Also, I glued in a 2" thick styrofoam to the inner side of the lid. I didn't have any gadgets nor a thermometer to control and/nor to measure the temperature inside the chamber. However, after 12 hours had passed, the whole gallon of inoculated milk turned into thick yogurt. This whole gallon of yogurt lasted me for about a week. So, this was kind of a weekly routine for me to make yogurt. What I still don't know is how much it cost me to heat up the needed water to fill up the pouches as the only heat source.
    That was then. These days, I think that I have found a much better way and I believe is more efficient compared to the old way. So, I ordered this W9005 egg controller for an incubator that is capable of automatically controlling both the temperature and humidity (www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804095869699.html). With this device, a polarized extension cord, an E27 light bulb socket (www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804675592667.html), a CFL light bulb, and a used carton shipping box, I quickly built me a makeshift incubator just for testing purposes. You can see it in this short video (www.4shared.com/s/f5ItCUiZjge) where the E27 light bulb socket is connected to an electrical outlet coming from the heating port of the gadget. The device works as advertised; however, I discovered a flaw with this device in the sense it starts to send interminen (rapid ON/OFF) power to its heating port to rapidly turn ON/OFF the CFL bulb when it senses the temperature dropped below the reference setting value. This behavior killed my CFL bulb. So, AliExpress gave me a full refund. This was a few months back. Then, I found this simple digital temperature controller (W3230) from AliExpress (www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804373288266.html). Since AliExpress as a US $1.99/item for ordering 3 items (a total of $5.97) + sales tax + Free Shipping to US (probably to Australia, too), this device only cost me about US $2. Unlike the previous device, this device is basically a programmable temperature control switch. I found the same device in this link (www.aliexpress.us/item/3256801149693715.html) and it has a diagram to show how to wire this device. When I receive this order, I will give it a try to see how good it is. Depending on how much heat you will need, you can replace the light bulb as your heating source with any inexpensive heating pad, i.e. a Pet Heating Pad (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BKKSDNVJ), an Electric Blanket Heated Throw (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BBGC17V6), any 30x30cm USB Heated Jacket Coat (www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804605461361.html), etc. The later, 30x30cm USB Heated Jacket Coat, only consumes 800 mAh @5V (about 4 Watts) of electricity. For 12 hours, this concoction will eat up about 48 Watts of electricity which I believe costs much less than heating up a litter of water.
    For anyone with lots of budget to burn, I believe this more expensive Durable Reptile Heating Pad 8" X 12" with Digital Thermostat (www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08XWTLVPV) ALONE is also doable. Cheers.

      If you are talking of the powdered pure culture...yes, it is less then a pinch, it only takes a few grains on the end of a knife - you can hardly see it! The packets say they will make 100 litres of yoghurt and only have about a teaspoon of powder! So you have to divide this according to the amount you are making.

    Hi, I’ve tried twice to make my yogurt from a frozen starter and it isn’t turning out. First time didn’t set and second try it set but was stringy. I used fresh tub of plain store bought yogurt and froze in ice blocks, I followed your steps. Can you help me understand what I’m doing wrong? Each of my frozen yogurt cubed was 1tablespoon worth and I use two and I used boiling water and sealed tight to set yogurt in thermas. I’m using my Easiyo maker...I’m new to your channel and love your tips. Thank you. From fresh yogurt I’m getting great homemade yogurt but not working from frozen yogurt?.

    • @homesteading
      @homesteading  3 года назад +4

      Is the fresh store bought yogurt working OK? If so, the frozen should also work. The stringy result you had suggests the temperature was too low, ice blocks of course make it colder! So the trick I sometimes use it to add an extra 1cm of boiling water to the thermos. Try this or wait for the frozen yogurt to melt. Otherwise try freezing your own homemade yogurt instead of the shop yogurt. Hope this helps. It works for me, but I am using my own homemade yogurt.

    Hello, I enjoyed your two video on the Easiyo system. I just bought a packet of theirs today, an impulse purchase, as I saw it in a shop. But, I didn't buy the thermos, thinking it was possibly superfluous. Watching your videos, I am wondering if boiling water inside my sealed slow cooker given 2-3 x 4 hour cycles would do the job, do you think that would work ok please? I will definitely get some full fat milk powder and buy some cultures too. Finally, I developed a liking for laban/lben/laben whilst in Morocco, which is more of a fermented drink. I imagine I could produce laban simply by using less milk powder, to reduce the thickness? That would be excellent, laban is so delicious. Thanks, God bless you.

    • @homesteading
      @homesteading  3 месяца назад

      Simply adding boiling water to the slow cooker with the container of mix and leaving overnight could work. Any good insulated system should work. You wouldn't want to boil the water again as it could overheat and kill the culture. Some bread makers will also make yogurt.

    hi, I think the temperature of the milk to start with is one of the most crucial factors that many have missed and it does seem harder to go wrong with the other parts of the process. Let's say I heat the fresh milk to 90C should I wait till it cools down to room temperature or culture temperature? UHT and powdered milk do not require heating but should we use room temperature or culture temperature water to begin with? Since the original sachet requires cool water (15-20C) which is way lower than the culture temperature

    • @homesteading
      @homesteading  Год назад

      If you have heated the milk it should definitely cool to room temperature if using the Easiyo system. Otherwise it will get too hot.

    • @homesteading

      As the purpose of that device is to hold the container at a level in the boiling water you would have to find something to do this...you could make something from wire or wood I'm sure. It's all about holding the level. otherwise keep an eye out for a second hand unit in an op shop...usually just a couple of dollars...the older style work just fine too.

      If I understand your question - you are asking could you use part easiyo sachet and part milk powder? Yes, but yes as you suggest this would reduce the flavour. You could always look for fruit juice concentrates to use as flavour.

    • @homesteading

      Personally have never tried making a half batch...halving the the amounts used for 1 liter should work fine. But the problem may be if you have air in half the container which would change temperatures...given the yogurt will keep quite well refrigerated why not make the full amount and simply use over longer time?

    • @homesteading

      Yes, "normal" milk needs to be heated to 90 deg C to denature the proteins before making yogurt. UHT milk has already been heated and can be used instead of milk powder.

  • @Paula-zl3zn
    @Paula-zl3zn 2 года назад

    I have tried this method quite a few times and my yogurt never tastes “tangy” I’m worried it may be kicking the culture?!? Also I use a milk powder from woolworths and it tends to come out a little bit gluey. I am wondering if this is because the milk powder contains soy lecithin. For example when I have had it in the fridge and it develops the whey the whey tends to be a little gluey. I just made a batch today and didn’t leave it in the thermos long enough and when I went to get it with a spoon. The consistency is like glue. Does yours do that? I used a store bought yogurt as my starter. But I’ve used 2 different brands of yogurt as my starter and the same thing happens. This batch I used 4 tablespoons of starter yogurt and previous ones I’ve used 2. Neither of them are tangy. Very very thick and creamy but not tangy. I only fill the water to the baffle and no higher as I have read if you fill it higher it can kill the culture. Any ideas?

    • @homesteading
      @homesteading  2 года назад +1

      Not entirely sure what your "gluey" is like, but if it is stringy rather than jellylike it usually means more heat is needed. In winter I frequently add another 1cm of water to the thermos (above the baffle) to get a good result. I find that to get a "tangy" yogurt it needs an acidophilus culture, or sometimes just leave it a bit longer (12-5hrs.) I don't think it is possible to kill the culture in an Easiyo unless the yogurt mix itself is already hot. Hope this helps...happy yogurt making!
