- Kill, kiss, or marry? An Ork, an Eldar, and a Chaos Space Marine? Go! Cody takes up the challenge with this review of Fantasy Flight Games' latest grand strategy game set in the Warhammer 40K universe.
The opening joke about Forbidden Island/Forbidden Desert absolutely killed me. I had to restart the video after I finally caught my breath.
Jared Lucev I'm glad you're doing okay. My jokes have killed before.
Love this game, between this and Twilight Imperium I have 2 amazing Sci-Fi wargames! Great review.
Thanks! I really like Forbidden Stars, but I love TI4!
Just played this again last night... Phenomenal game!
Indeed it is! Thanks!
I reeeeaaally wish you guys made a playthrough of this amazing gem, I would watch it in a heartbit.
Not in the cards for the foreseeable future. Maybe down the road.
Cody, as always, an excellent & enjoyable review. Defiantly on my "to buy" list. As I love running demo's at local conventions this will be a "2-fer me" purchase. More is always better, unless it's one of those late nights when you suddenly realize, after 27 beers, you've had nothing to eat all day. (But at that point, who cares!) Happy gaming!!
Von Deekin There is wisdom in your comment, Von.
Hiya Cody, excellent review as usual! love how you show pics of how actual game, gives a FEEL of the game.
Please comment if I have got the following vibe correctly, to help decide if I want to buy it (it's expensive!):
It seems to combine the best features of recent games, BUT strengthens their weaknesses:
- Warrior knights and Runewars (order cards but adds Dice!)
- Cyclades (need chain to move troops, but not as restrictive)
- Asymmetric factions (but not TOO game-breakingly different)
- dice combat mitigated with 3 cards (and mindgames!)
- almost reminds me of cosmic encounter also (but with dice! yeah!)
- Programmed actions (like Mission red planet) with lots of screwage (real word?)!
- Variable strategy
- Some deckbuilding (based on your strategy)
- High replayability
- Memorable and fun games!
- Heard it plays well with 2-3 players, in under 3 hours?
Many thanks for your stellar work! Sal
+Salman Qaisar I haven't played all the games you mentioned, but generally those observations are correct from what I can tell. A four player game can be 4+ hours, but 2-3 is about 2-3 hours. Very fun game.

Thanks for prompt reply, bub!
- the major downside seems to be the downtime for noncombat players - does it get less after few games?
- if not, would a timer help?
- it almost seems begging to add an ally mechanism like cosmic encounter ( come on FFG!)
btw I almost stooped watching when u announced it was a coop! hahaha
+Salman Qaisar
*stopped* that was a typo, not a bad Scottish accent!
Thank you so much for this post, that says a *lot*. (There are games and mechanisms on your list that I love/have wanted to play/don't see enough of.)
I played my first game of FS lasting night. A slightly inebriated Frenchman beat me in a two player intro game. It was alot of fun and I think it will be one of the games I push for to hit the table top. It helps to have a general plan of attack going forward as 8 rounds does take a long time to play but, oddly enough, doesn't leave much time to doddle about. Also the limited model counts makes some interesting army compositions. ~Dusty
Oljana Vaidych Indeed. With the exception of other people's combat in 3-4 player games, it keeps you involved throughout.
The Discriminating Gamer expansions could negate the down time during combat in larger games. Temporary alliances with other players to aid in battle could be interesting.
James Wilson That could be interesting indeed.
My favorite game of 2015. I totally agree with combat being too much of a slog. It should've been simplified / streamlined, imo. I think they were trying to squeeze more value out of the combat cards / deck idea. If you took the somewhat obtuse combat from this game and made a baby with the too light combat from Star Wars Rebellion, I would really like to play that game.
+TheGreatHamEl Indeed!
I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought we were getting a co-op game in space. And was I disappointed that it wasn't? Well, yes and no. It's like getting a really good burger, when what you really wanted was cake.
***** Ha! It was, of course, a bit tongue in cheek.
The Discriminating Gamer in the video it might have been tongue in cheek, but me in the store did about the same thing.
I played this last night for the first time (none of us had played before). 5 stars.
Also, just wanted to add that, in a 4 player game I didn't notice the downtime at all.
Rowbags The Destroyer Yeah- in some games the downtime is more noticeable than in others. I think a lot of it depends on players' AP.
The Discriminating Gamer my only real gripe is that the game can be quite unforgiving, particularly early. One of the players in our game left his only factory open and lost it in turn two. He was practically a bystander from then on.
Rowbags The Destroyer That hasn't happened to me yet, but I can see how that's a possibility in this game.
+Rowbags The Destroyer
In the grim darkness of the 41st millennium, there is no forgiveness.
As far as FFG is concerned In the Grim Darkness of the Far future, there is only MOAR!!
Great review! I think I *may* have found #15! Have you had a chance to kick the tires on the two player since this review? Just imagine how the detail on those minis would pop with just a light wash. Wow.
No, still haven't had a chance to do two player. I hope to one day.
Erlier was Starcraft. FFG lost the IP any new iteration of this mechanic or somthing similiar?
Not that I'm aware of. FFG usually plays everything pretty close to their chest.
Sad that there will be no expansions to forbiden stars (devouring planets Tyranids, Necrons, Tau). I have heard that Bioshock: Infinite the Board Game was something in between samurai and forbiden stars.
@@marcinmalczewski310 I haven't played that one.
When you say"We liked it!" is that the Royal We (Wii?) like from your Courtier review or are you talking about you and Evil Cody together liking it?
Either way it looks awesome (if I can only get my wife to agree that it should be in next months budget under storage supplies... because its space saving!)
Peter Terry Oh, it was the royal we. I am, like 97% of those of Western European ethnicity, descended from Charlemagne, so fetch me my tiara and slippers, peasant!
The Discriminating Gamer Wow. So what are the family reunions like? Must be hard to rent a large enough venue!
Peter Terry Yeah. It sucks to be royal and penniless.
How does it play two player Cody?
Curtis Chapman All of the games I've played thus far have been four player. I've heard its a really good two player, though. Tom Vasel at the Dice Tower did a two player play through a couple of weeks ago. If I hit it again as a two player sometime soon I'll let you know.
I have played two player almost a half a dozen times now. Its fun but I compare it (2P) to a knife fight in a telephone booth. Quick and deadly. Not alot of upgrading combat cards more of amassing what troops you can while making desperate plays for the two objectives. I prefer 3-4 players but I don't turn down forbidden stars at any player count so color me bias.
So it reminds you roughly of Neurosima Hex 3.0?
Anything similar to this but not 40k? I like the theme but no one in my group is familiar with it... Heretics.
I don't know. This game is kind of its own animal.
This game is apparently based on the Starcraft board game, both now out of print.
Played it last night. Great game and I enjoyed half of it. Didn't enjoy the first 3 hours learning the rules by the pretty poorly written rules. Once you get through the rules slog, it is a pretty fun game.
There is a learning curve, but it is a very fun game.
Agreed. Just hoping our next game doesn't take 12 hours...
Hehehe get my copy 50€ on my language few days ago... This weekend there's gonna be only WAR.
Fantastic!
great review!!
Thank you, Sir.
Forbidden Stars by Leacock is not at all far fetched. Funny stuff.
thegrimjester Indeed.
Did you learn all those rules yourself, or was a minion briefing you? ;-)
Paul Vallack A little from column A, a little from column B.
I am some hot compelled by the Warhammer universe anymore
I do not understand.
