Which seat does the pilot fly from in a helicopter? The answer is different for each make and model

  • The Pilot seat in a helicopter seems to be a confusing one for so many keyboard warriors...lol. So ya'll are just gonna have to watch the video all the way to the end to find out the answer 😉
    But for all you nice folks who are genuinely curious, it can be either seat depending on which manufacturer and how the machine is configured and what it says in the Flight Manual. This Bell 505 is certified to be PIC from either the right or the left seat. The Robinsons can also be PIC from either seat, but when flown solo, the pilot must sit in the right seat. The MD500 is left seat drive, 99% of the time anyway. The H130 is PIC from the left seat and the dual controls are in the middle seat. When there are 4 seats across the front, the dual controls must be removed.
    If you're a helicopter pilot, drop a comment and tell us what you fly, and which seat you fly from and which you prefer.🚁

    I've flown left seat fixed wing for 35 years and always wondered why helo pilots flew from the right seat. Thanks for the explanation.... guess I was too embarrassed to ask! :)

    I learned to fly the helicopter at Addison Apt, ADS, in Addison, Texas All of my instruction was in a Hughes 269, Military TH-55 surplus. In the summer afternoon when they know I was coming, they wouldn't completely fill the tanks with fuel or we hovered or hover taxied until it would pick itself up. Doors off, 500AGL over swimming pools, Woohoo. I dragged it out before taking my check ride. I also co-piloted a AS350 several days a year. Operation Green Thunder

      I completely enjoyed your informational video. I flew the TH-269 from the left seat most of the time. We swapped so I got the feel of flying either side.

    The only chopper I flew on the left seat was the SA330 all others in the right seat. I prefer flying in the right seat, the right hand on the cyclic and the left I can use it to change radios, etc.

    • @HeliPilotLeigh

      Is that a 2 pilot machine?

    • @joaquinfabrega
      @joaquinfabrega 4 дня назад +1

      @ The SA330 have three seats in a row. My understanding is that it was designed as a trainer, the instructor would be in the middle and one student in each side, all three with cyclic and collective, but the concept was not liked by the Army so the civilian versión placed the PIC on the left seat for safety reasons, in the middle there are no controls and in the right the controls are removable. By the way I flew one from Elmira, NY to Panama (Central America) it was a seven day trip, It was great.

    I seem to recall a video of a helicopter with a single cyclic that could be passed from the left seat to the right and vice versa. Am I crazy?

    • @patrickjennings7362
      @patrickjennings7362 11 дней назад +3

      No you aren’t crazy. Robison helicopters do this. Some people love Robbie’s…..others hate them. But they do what you are talking about.

    I always wondered why not standardize all flying machines with side by side seats with PIC in the left seat.

    • @HeliPilotLeigh
      @HeliPilotLeigh  9 дней назад

      But then there’s the fore and aft seating…lol. Some tailwheel planes are flown from the back seat, and some from the front. Can’t standardize something like this that depends on CG.

    • @filipeorr7821
      @filipeorr7821 9 дней назад +1

      That is exactly the reason I said "side by side seats"!
      (I believe fore and aft seats are ambidextrous😂)

    To be real if your a pilot that has flown more than 2K hours it doesn't matter what seat you take.
    Example- if your a Learjet pilot or even a person that served time in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot, you can let a child in 3rd grade have the pilot seat.

      @HeliPilotLeigh have you ever went fishing for a gator dangling a raw whole chicken from a robinson? I don't know the legalities of that but I've done it.
      The alligator didn't take the bait but I do like to imagine the gator got it's little lizard mind blown that day, it didn't even take a nibble it was to focused on the chopper.
