This is fantastic! My abuela use to tell me that I was born under the eye of Yucaju. She passed before I could explore more of what she meant but she would often tell me stories of these gods and of Juan Bobo.
thank you for this information. i am researching taino mythology and as you mentioned, can be a little inconsistent and contradictory depending on the version the gods are interpreted as. this has definitely helped piece all the inconsistencies together
I was born first generation, bilingual. it's hard to tell fact from fiction sometimes, as in, what the tainos really believed. I'm glad I found this channel. I want to live in PR one day.
I must thank you there are not a lot of videos in English about the mythology of the tainos. Ohare you giong to make a video of santaria in Puerto Rico one day?
I love our Boricua history. I wish grandpa would not had passed so early in my life. Him and grandma could speak to nature, read the skies and the land like book. Grandma was a medicine woman.
What sources did you use for this video? I've been diving headfirst into the cemi and our pantheon for a while and I love your presentation but it is completely different from everything else I've read. Being that we are a reconstructionist faith I want to find as much creditable information as I can. Much appreciation for this video.
@Djawesomusprime I used several sources but these stories are all over the place and they are so different from one source to the next. I actually mention this in the video..
Imagine they made a movie about this! With music by Lin-Manuel Miranda! Maybe some guest stars from famous Puerto Ricans and mixed ones to like Bruno Mars, Kevin Gates and Niel degrasse Tyson 😂
I'm very curious. What is your source for the existence of Juracan prior to Spanish influence. I haven't found any research or information on Juracan (or Guacar) as I have found Guabancex. I also like the source of the creation story of Boriken. I've never heard that before. I was surprised to see Guabonito, the woman who healed Guahayona when he became ill on Matinino.
@TheBigGuy-Zero8874 I had a good reliable source and I would have to look in my files to give you the exact source...Having said that, these stories are all over the place as I mentioned in the video.. It's hard to find a consensus on one story..
Juracan is the Spanish name given to Guabancex. It's very clear that Juracan is influenced or related to "huracan" which is the Spanish equivalent for hurricane. That said Guabancex is the goddess of storms, and there you have it. Similar to how Yucahu had the cassava plant attributed to him, and now and then the plant is also named yuca by Puerto Ricans P.S. Guacar is brother to Yucahu and Guabancex is rival to Yucahu. Guabancex goddess of chaos and storms, travels to El yunque to contest Yucahu and tempt the other gods into joining her. From what I've read (I might be wrong), Guacar upon realizing he would not take his mother's place as supreme creator and instead his twin brother, left never to be seen again.
yucahu was not male and taino were in jamaica, cuba, haiti, puerto rico and other islands.. it's weird how jamaica, cuba, haiti , DR all have taino spirits in their spiritual traitions that come in trance even today, but puerto rico does not have its own spiritual tradition yet people claim online that taino center is there -_-
It's sad how they just robbed all this from us and took the side of our lives the people who did this to us should be accounted for these people who colonized this place they live in well and they get in the way with crime left and right this is not fair what they've done to us and what they done to other tribes in this continent it is not fair
@@coquireportAND? That's varies but it doesn't take away our heritage and history. You're looking at us and speaking about us exactly how the Spaniards would've wanted you to. Where did this creation myth come from?
@Bryan Torres from scholars who have studied the Taino..However stories can differ and oftentimes can seem contradictory to the observer.
Loved the video

marcuscruz248 us? You do know that the average Puerto Rican is 65-75% European (mainly Spanish) 10-15 Taino or Amerindian and 15-20% West African..
