I actually have a volunteer job at the main library here in Los Angeles and the thing is because of the fact that the library is so often a hub for a lot of different individuals from a lot of different situations people who work at the library or rigorously train to be extremely passive and nonjudgmental because the very last thing the library needs is for a homeless person or an immigrant to try to sue the library because some sort of perceived discrimination or punitive damages such as emotional damage etc. There's just so many different situations that the library attracts with especially if it's a main/central library location, we get people coming and bringing their utility bills that are way overdue with the letters threatening to shut them down and they try to pretend like they don't understand why and that and that the company recommended that they go to the library to get further help thinking that we're going to be able to do something for them, thinking that we're going to be able to give advice etc. I always hear the head librarian at my location telling people "this is the library we provide information not advice" lol Also, there is a very rigid set of rules in place to ensure the absolute equality and university Alaoui with in the library, again to prohibit any possibility of people suing for any made up reasons. Like one time I arrived early over an hour and a half by chance and the library hadn't opened yet wasn't going to open for over an hour and I really needed to use the restroom and I asked the main library and if she could please let me in at least just to use the restroom and I could go back outside and she had to refuse me because of all of the homeless people who wait until the library opens to go in and use the facilities she couldn't allow me as a volunteer stuff to do that, because the policy is that until it officially opens only librarians not even library and assistance only librarians and the security are allowed inside and if anybody had Seen her letting me in there could've been a lawsuit. I was irritated at the time so I literally just responded "OK" and then just remained silent. I've always regretted coming across so irritated when I think back on the incident because I do recognize the position that she was in and how she couldn't have done it even if she understood. Thank God I was downtown so I just split and went to like a restaurant where I knew they had a bathroom and ordered something but seriously, that incident is always the perfect reminder to me of just how the library system works
Lol i worked security at a library and I had to kick someone out for repeatedly looking at porn. I noticed it as I walked by and told the librarian. He kept getting pop ups because they could see what he was browsing so they sent him warnings. He kept looking at it so I made him leave, but library policy is that he can come back the next day lol. As I was escorting the guy out he said "I can't stay and read the newspaper?" I was like "no you need to leave" lol
