This was a web-only performance, which Jimmy typically reserved for more obscure tracks. For the performance that actually played on NBC, they did "You Are a Tourist" which was indeed the current single at the time.
soooo cool that they played an old song when promoting a (at the time) new album. and one of my favorite songs/a super rare one that they dont often play live
I find it interesting that they played this song instead of something off of Codes and Keys. Not complaining though, this just might be my favorite Death Cab song.
Ryan Walsh for me it sits only behind the Transatlanticism trifecta of Tiny Vessels, Transatlanticism (when I saw them live I balled my eyes out to it) and a lack of colour
one hundred percent changed my life and when they played this the first time i saw them live it was absolutely out of this world. didn't know it at the time but it turned out it was Walla's second last show with them live.

I remember this song was played as I tripped into a guest room so to speak, in college. The guy was a HUGE DC fan and that got me into them. Now i'm a DC Lover too :)
Yeah, if you listen to the original version of this song its pretty low fi until the its kicks in at the second verse. They were just making this performance true to the album version because that quality switch gives a great dynamic to the song.
One of their best songs from one of their best albums. I love death cab and have for many years, I'm glad they still play older stuff because to me its so much better than the last two albums.... I'm not trying to be elitist I just have that syndrome where the older stuff was so good that you can't get into newer stuff that easily.
i love that they didn't play a codes and keys song. i mean, i know people do that a lot and theyre not special but we have the facts is my favorite album so it makes me happy that they chose this. looove death cab~
The drum machine was likely added to the first half of the song to achieve that Lo-Fi quality from the album version, but I think it was probably most noticeable live. On RUclips I can't really notice it, but I still figure that's the reason for the drum machine. Also, Title Track on Fallon?? GENIUS.
I just discovered it today after having been a death cab fan for 10 years now (barely ever listened to anything they did pre-Photo Album) and now I'm obsessed with it. Also Company Calls.
@SierraPapaFoxtrot This wasn't the song that they played for the actual show that aired on tv, on the Jimmy Fallon show they often ask bands who've been around for a while to do an older song that they can put up on their website
Definitely shows everyone is on the same page about Codes and Keys. They had a give-away for tickets to an upcoming show in my area. The entire radio commercial played snippets of songs from various albums, Not one from the new album lol :-)
@11salparadise It's probably the pre-recorded drum track that appears on the original record. This is done to give the effect of a different drum texture when the live drums come in like the record.
Yes! Either Jimmy Fallon has great taste in song requests or Death Cab is going through a mid-life crisis / realizes where their own golden age is / wants people to check out their older (and better) material instead of solely listening to the most recent album(s).
It's not a drum machine, it's QuestLove. On a lot of late night shows bands get extra help from the house band, especially if they like the song and want to play along.
anyone else getting nervous watching Ben fidget so much while he plays? I've seen him live a dozen times and he always does this side to side swaying thing, but he seems to be moving a lot here compared to how chill this song is lol
I doubt they're sampling. You don't really catch it in this video but in other videos of them performing this song, McGerr appears to be using pedals. The lights are too dim to really tell here.
so i'm not the only one that noticed?! his voice changed soo much after plans. and even after the photo album it was totally different. fortunately, transatlanticism and plans kicked so much ass, the voice change didn't bother me.
I'm guessing it's a drum machine. On the album the first half of the song has a really LO-FI drum sound with heavy effects, and then the actual drums kick in after the first chorus. So when they do it live they probably just use pre-recorded drums for the first part
Going back and watching it a second time, they all turn to Jason at the beginning while he fiddles with something, which is probably him triggering the pre-recorded drums
@Zsmart Congratulations, you responded to a joke from 5 months ago that has already been responded to multiple times. Not only that, but you also managed to misinterpret the nature of the joke entirely. Your parents must be proud.
"Go buy our new album, now here's a song from 10 years ago" 👍👍👍👍 I love these guys
agreen182 That's what I thought. Wouldn't you want to play a song from the album, to give the audience a taste of what's to come?
Orion's Comics when you made an album as good as "We Have the Facts", you can play any song from it at any time IMO
agreen182 they didn’t play anything pre transatlanticism when I saw them last week :/
@@daviewavie112 i saw them last year and they played Company Calls and it was MAGICAL
This was a web-only performance, which Jimmy typically reserved for more obscure tracks. For the performance that actually played on NBC, they did "You Are a Tourist" which was indeed the current single at the time.
I absolutely adore it when bands dig up their most ancient, heartfelt songs and play them again.
soooo cool that they played an old song when promoting a (at the time) new album. and one of my favorite songs/a super rare one that they dont often play live
Am i the only one who still loves the melancholic albums a lil more than the new "feel-good" codes 'n keys?
Id say kintsugi is back to the melancholy
+Tio Foqs i completely completely completely agree!!!
Their first four albums were their best, easily.
For me Transatlanticism is the best. Those lyrics always get me. A lack of color for example. Just wow...
"And I can taste your lipstick on the filter."
every once in a while i come back to watch this exact video... something about it gets me
It's probably that sweet little change up at the end. Always gets me. Definitely one of my favorite songs by them.
MY FAVORITE DEATH CAB SONG. I had no idea they played it on national tv like this. HELL YEAH
omg I thought the title was a misprint until they hit that first note. This is the definition cool.
Probably the coolest thing they’ve ever done! So much respect! Also off their best album
I find it interesting that they played this song instead of something off of Codes and Keys. Not complaining though, this just might be my favorite Death Cab song.

@@callumalston5755 what I wouldn't give to see transatlanticism live
It's really awesome that they still play songs from We Have The Facts..... Chris Walla says it's still his favorite of their albums.
one hundred percent changed my life and when they played this the first time i saw them live it was absolutely out of this world. didn't know it at the time but it turned out it was Walla's second last show with them live.
"Yeah fuck playing a single off the new record on live television" The most noble/badass thing they've ever done.
I think it’s awesome that they chose this song to play on Fallon. Truly a gem.

One of their greatest songs. It's really cool that they did this track from albums ago, even though they had just put out their newest release
We Have The Facts, such a good album. My best judgement signed it’s resignation
I remember this song was played as I tripped into a guest room so to speak, in college. The guy was a HUGE DC fan and that got me into them. Now i'm a DC Lover too :)
This song is so beautiful.
Promote new album... Play song from 11 years ago.
Yeah, if you listen to the original version of this song its pretty low fi until the its kicks in at the second verse. They were just making this performance true to the album version because that quality switch gives a great dynamic to the song.
This is one of my favs, still shocked they played it while promoting a later album
I love this Band.
“We moved too fast, Tripped into the guest room” love deathcab
Saw DCFC in about 2007 in the small room of Amsterdams famous Paradiso and really liked it
jason goin hard on that snare playin the tambourine
They played this song for all the people who assumed "Plans" was their first album.
i love death cab for doing this. god, they are the best band.
A true classic
I love this song.

awesome!!!
We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes FTW.

totally agree with you!
I never noticed Walla's riff in the song until seeing this.
It's my understanding that Ben isn't fond of Codes and Keys. Personally, I think it's a fantastic album.
Yeah, that's ?Love. His snare is really unique sounding.
@11salparadise It's probably the pre-recorded drum track that appears on the original record. This is done to give the effect of a different drum texture when the live drums come in like the record.
They knew this song was a better play.
Yes! Either Jimmy Fallon has great taste in song requests or Death Cab is going through a mid-life crisis / realizes where their own golden age is / wants people to check out their older (and better) material instead of solely listening to the most recent album(s).
hahahahaha yes but an incredible song. We Have the Facts is one of their best in my opinion.
i think that fact makes you a fan, maybe even a real fan!
Am I the only one who notices that Jason doesn't play at first? It had to be Questlove helping the drums sound distant like the record
I have watched this 10 times trying to figure that out.
It’s absolutely Quest playing. His snare crack is unmistakable.
This hurts : ))
I fucking died laughing.
It's not a drum machine, it's QuestLove. On a lot of late night shows bands get extra help from the house band, especially if they like the song and want to play along.
@11salparadise I think they used the original drum track of the song
@SierraPapaFoxtrot You are a conclusion jumping extraordinaire. They played the new single right before it.
anyone else getting nervous watching Ben fidget so much while he plays? I've seen him live a dozen times and he always does this side to side swaying thing, but he seems to be moving a lot here compared to how chill this song is lol
@josimonkeyman This was not a question. Please just don't comment anymore, when you clearly can't read.
2019...
he played the drums in that song on the album version, they´re sampling the same track, so you are listening to ben from 12 years ago
Nick Harmer has had the exact same image since this song was first released...1 Haitcut, 1 band, 1 fucking sweet bassist.
When good songs go wrong
@SierraPapaFoxtrot ...And still sound fucking awesome!
@TheZatrahc Actually, he used to be beardless.
I swear everytime I hear Ben singing live he sounds different
me too.

Because he got skinny. Your voice changes a lot when that happens.
does anyone else think Death Cab took cues from Seam ? his singing and their mellow songs remind me alot of Seam
PFFFFT McGerr using a drum track, that's rick xD
Could be ?uestlove playing, maybe...
@10stripJ There's no auto-tune on this track???
I feel like it's Questlove, sorry if someone had already said that.
I'm guessing it's a drum machine. On the album the first half of the song has a really LO-FI drum sound with heavy effects, and then the actual drums kick in after the first chorus. So when they do it live they probably just use pre-recorded drums for the first part

Lose the curtains, Ben
This is a great song but why didn't they play a song off the new album instead of a song they recorded a decade ago? I don't understand.
that is actually ben
I bet people had no clue what this song was.
@josimonkeyman OMG I know, learn to read between the lines.
Playing the drums? Totally...
You need to work on a getting Wind in Sails with this!!!!!!! and when Postal goes too.
@Zsmart Congratulations, you responded to a joke from 5 months ago that has already been responded to multiple times. Not only that, but you also managed to misinterpret the nature of the joke entirely. Your parents must be proud.
Its a Gibson L6s I believe
???
Profit
I honestly think Ben just feels a little too close to this song after what happened with him and Zooey.
its gotta be a drum track...why, I've no idea he's a very talented drummer but there is way too much goin on to be just using pedals.
hahahahahaha such an odd song choice!!
he has to have the most unique yet annoying voicing in hipster history......
real men play bass.
+Leon Carlo Which, as I said, is preferably the bass. Nick is the man.
