- I got a perm three years ago at a salon for $250 because the length of my hair. That's Gucci money! So I decided to try perming my hair my self two years ago which costed me around $50 for everything. I personally love my hair and I get so many compliments on it. You should know a few tips before you think you want a perm:
1) Make sure your hair is super healthy before perming. It shouldn't be over processed, broken, fragile etc. Perming is actually pretty damaging to the hair so you want to make sure your hair is in its healthiest condition before perming.
2) RESEARCH!!! I literally looked up everything I could about perms for about a year before I decided to finally do it. Make sure you know what rod size would be good for your hair length and type, what type of perm (Alkaline, Acid, Exothermic) would your hair react best to etc. Seriously research everything.
3) Don't get frustrated. Perming your hair usually takes about 1.5-2 hours depending on hair length. Rolling your hair is what takes the longest. Don't worry about rolling them perfect either. I think that having un-perfect curls make them look more natural.
4) Make sure you perm your hair on a day that you're not going to have much to do the next 48 hours. Rinsing with water only is okay but no product should be put on the hair for 48 hours minimum after perming.
5) Try to switch to a SULFATE-FREE shampoo after perming. It helps the perm last longer.

Fab tutorial ! ..... I’m a qualified hairdresser since 1984 & it’s great to see the return of the perm. BIG TIP: the 1st stage creates the curl. The 2nd stage (neutraliser) should be used with a sponge & put on every part thoroughly as it’s the stage that SETS the curl permanently.

I’m a licensed cosmetologist you explained everything really well you did a very good job your hair looks amazing the only thing I would recommend is if you have super long hair piggyback the rods if you put too much on one rod the solution might not absorb correctly and you won’t have curls in some Places but it’s your choice if you don’t have enough rods to piggyback buy extra solution and just douse your hair

My Mom and her friends used to do that during the 80‘s, maybe 90‘s. I can still remember, how they helped each other. Old things are coming back, i tell ya. :-)
I have nightmares of the perks my mom used to give me during the 80s and early 90s. They were so tight, and all I ever wanted was large, soft curls. Over the past few months, I've been reconsidering perming my hair, but not with rollers. I have those long curly tubes for super long hair, and I know there are some salons that do perms with those. I'm willing to try it at least once 😜
your hair permed looks exactly like my hair after a shower, but i straighten it tho because i prefer straight hair, we always want what we dont have but both are beautiful and you've got lovely curls

. Last time I perm my hair was in the 80’s yes ,I am somewhat older lol. I have hair straight as a board and down to my waist and really want a change , you have inspired me to do this , my quote at salon was almost $300. 😟

If your hair is thin would the perm make your hair into tighter or littler curls ??
Curls will last longer and have better definition if you keep the rods in while rinsing and putting neutralizer on.

The bottom/middle section of my hair fell back straight while the top half stayed “permed.” 😞 I’m thinking the cause is my hair is too straight, heavy, and all one straight layer... help! When can I re-perm?

I've always wanted my hair curly but the thing that keeps me away from perms is that I hear they are very damaging. Did perming your hair damage it severely?
Les v I got myself a perm a while back & for me it was my first time ever getting my hair professionally done(I use to have curly/wavy hair until I straighten it throughout hs). After The 3rd time I did notice my hair was a bit dry (also I was a swimmer ) but I used products that were moisturizing & moisturizing masks. I also trimmed my hair after I got the perm just in case I ended up getting split ends. After conditioning my hair to be curly again , My hair never went back to straight

Yes, they are very damaging to hair. The chemicals used in perms are very caustic and tend to dry out hair as a result. Overprocessing can actually burn hair and make it brittle! Try to find a gentle perm formula (they're out there) and use a deep moisturizing leave-in conditioner as part of your maintenance regime. Sally's Beauty Supply has a ton of amazing hair masks to help heal processed hair.
I've permed my hair at hope twice already and it's never been really damaging yeah it might be a little dry after but after to wash your hair a couple of times it goes back to normal
