  • Trying to demonstrate what the instrument can do, but I've only been playing it for a few days because it's only existed for a few days. More: www.jefftk.com...

Why would anyone think this sounds like a mandolin?

It doesn't sound anything like a mandolin, and you don't play it like a mandolin. I need a better name for it than "not-mandlin". The name comes from that I was originally planning on making an electronic harp mandolin: www.jefftk.com/p/prototyping-pluck-sensors

Jeff, what functional advantage does this have over a keyboard, which you already play at gigs? what i'm hearing is a compromised keyboard with a simple synth sound.

I'm not sure! It's possible that it isn't an improvement over a keyboard. But I think it might be: while I'm not great at it yet, it feels like it should be *much* faster to play while still being velocity sensitive. Keyboard is pretty difficult for playing notey fiddle tunes up to speed: it's possible, and there are some very good players who can do it, but most don't because the keys are so spread out and have so much inertia.
On the sound, the instrument is just a midi controller. I have it with Simple Synth in this video.
