      sss kkkooosss we need this view far more often than it’s shown. When we have a pitch that’s close to the top/bottom of the zone we need a face-on view. When we have a outside/inside pitch we need an overhead view. Yet what we get most of the time is a view from over the pitcher’s shoulder from the outfield, the worst possible view for ALL pitches.

    • @thecaynuck4694
      @thecaynuck4694 4 года назад

      Ikr, and I feel as if the umpire would have a similar view to that, just lower of course. Regardless, they still make terrible calls.

    • @patersonplankrd
      @patersonplankrd 4 года назад +2

      Here's the deal.
      Couple things. First, because the umpire has to position himself on one side of the catcher or the other, it changes his "eye" or perspective. Batters are trained to realize this. Also batters should be paying attention to that umpires stroke zone. Most umpires are consistent the entire game. The players quickly realize this and they prepare for it.
      Second, a good umpire is not going to give a hitter too much leeway on close pitches. These guys are professionals and should be at the plate ready to hit.
      Not be looking for walks.
      That may appear unjust or incorrect to some .
      But this is the way it is. This is baseball.
      Look gang, its way better than it used to be.
      Before MLB started with stationing umpire supervisors at every game , strikes were called based on where the catcher set up.
      For example if the catcher was 6 inches off the plate and the pitcher hit the glove without making the catcher move, those were strikes.
      Gregg Maddux made a living off his impeccable ability to locate his pitches by "hitting the keyhole".
      That guy had the respect of umpires and they gave that leeway. MLB put a stop to this because it was in fact getting pretty ridiculous.
      Now, pitches more than half a ball width off the plate see rarely called strikes.
      Yet still batters are overly patient with greater than 50% of all p5iches thrown , the batter makes no attempt at swinging.
      Yet, strikeouts are way up over say 10 years ago

    1:12 The catcher starts with his glove down, then raises it up to catch the pitch, then keeps moving it up to hold the ball in the strike zone. Instead of holding his glove in the zone somewhere as a target for the pitcher, then having to bring his glove down to catch the pitch and then having to bring it back up into the strike zone.
    A few other catchers did this too in the video. The umps need to get better at watching the pitch and not the ending position of the catcher’s gloves.

    • @ComradeJehannum
      @ComradeJehannum 4 года назад

      Yup, I agree some of these "professional" umpires need to watch some tape on just how badly they get CONNED by catchers "framing" balls that are WELL OUTSIDE the strike zone and pull them in. But then maybe if umpires set up properly they would see it.

    • @Mark-sj3xb
      @Mark-sj3xb Год назад

      The very fact that framing is an actual factor in calling balls and strikes is an indictment of how bad umpires are. I learned as a hack rec league umpire that you watch the ball as it crosses the plate, not where it lands in the catchers glove.

    Reminds me of that Cheers episode where Sam Malone was arguing with a retired umpire in his bar over over a blown pitch call many years ago. They argued and the ex ump refused to admit he was wrong. After he threw Sam out of his own bar he quietly admitted "Eh, maybe it was a strike, I was going through a divorce that year!". Managers HAVE to contest it, and umps HAVE to hold their own. It's just how it is.

    Announcers need to realize a strike is called due to where the ball crosses the plate and it's not where the catcher ends up catching it. Yes framing a pitch and mastery of being able to do so can and will help get the call most of the time. I can see why many of the curves are called strike due to the umpire believing he saw the ball catch the bottom of the strike zone.

    They need to monitor these umps more, MLB implementing a electronic strike zone is not a terrible idea. Testing the strike zone will have to be required of course to make sure and eliminate any bugs. Who else is sitting here shaking their head at these calls? They should also allow Managers 2 challenges a game without the Ump getting so booty hurt about their calls being wrong.

    Mannnnn ohhh man.. A few things...
    1. Mistakes are made when people are taken out of their comfort levels. Typically this happens when the game is moving to fast for the person. Obviously these umpires are living outside their comfort zones trying to umpire super athletes.
    2. Nothing kills the flow of the game and dampers enthusiasm in sports like poor umpiring.
    3. The MLBs reluctance to improve the recruiting and hiring process. Is exactly why robot umps are knockin at the door and the game as we know it will never be the same.
    Smh...

    I've watched baseball my whole life and what I have never understood is they will throw a player out for saying just one word but when the manager comes out and argues with them and yells at them for like 20 - 30 seconds they don't throw them out. Like come on just give the players a break.

    • @hbk314

      It depends on what's said.
      Also, the manager is sort of like the team spokesman. He's the one who communicates with umpires. Assistant coaches get almost no rope. Players get more. Managers get most because it's their job to represent the team in communicating with the umpires.
