Why? Money, I suspect. Not a new phenomenon. In the height of the VHS/early DVD market throughout the 1990's and early 2000's, they had a division devoted to making sequels of their catalogue, from recent to ones back from the 1960's. Straight-to-video was the precursor to straight-to-streaming.

Thank you so much for commenting, agree they lost so much money in the last couple of years.

@@projectpopculture2017 I'm glad a simple comment can be a benefit and I'm also relieved when my comments aren't misinterpreted as unfriendly. However, I didn't say they lost money. They've had setbacks, but they've made more money than lost.
Black Widow underperformed because of Covid. Same with Shang-Chi and Eternals (although, that one was also not well liked). No Way Home, however, made a killing, nearly $2 billion, which is Avengers-level money. Despite having mixed receptions, Doctor Strange 2, Thor 4, and Black Panther 2 were all highly profitable.
Ant-Man 3 and The Marvels flopped. However, Guardians 3 and Deadpool 3 made huge profits, with Deadpool 3 becoming the new highest grossing R-rated film.
So 3 underperforming but still profitable and 2 bombs out of 9 isn't great, but their gains exceed their losses. Plus, there is the ever-increasing Disney+ subscription costs.
