I have this camera and had no idea how to use the light meter and the consequences were 18 of my shots were completely over exposed. Thanks for the post 👌👍
They are such great cameras really. Thoroughly overlooked but that is probably changing. I rescued one from a goodwill, looked not to be in great shape but it cleaned up close to new. Great camera. Thank you for the video.
Nice to see these making a comeback. Likewise was my first SLR in the early 90's, broke the wind-on arm so picked up a MTL5 and MTL5B. Just been given two complete darkroom setups and managed to get another MTL5B and 50/1.8 in a local antique shop. Thanks for the Great vid Edit - Quick tip, If you only take one extra shot from closing the door you get an extra shot on the film. My MTL5 had a faulty/disconnected double exposure lock and I learnt exactly how far to wind on each time, getting 40 shots from a 36 exposure film
I have a Praktica MTL 5 B with a Penatacon Auto f 1.8/ 50 mm lens. This is basically the same camera as your MTL 50, the only differences being the battery for the lightmeter-my camera uses a single LR 44 button cell and the lightmeter, which on the MTL 5 B is a needle match type. To my knowledge, the MTL 5B and MTL 50 were the last M42 mount cameras, produced by Praktica before the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. I'm giving my Praktica a spin with a Kentmere 100 B & W film. I'm a newbie in film photography, so I hope that my first pictures with the Praktica will turn out good. Your video was very interesting, so keep up the good work. Greetings from Bulgaria.
Ah yes the 5B was very similar and I do intend to get one eventually but there are just so many others I want first. Good luck with yours and thank you for stopping by.
Great video, thank you. The Praktica MTL series are superb cameras, robust, durable and steadfastly reliable. The steel shutters are virtually indestructible. Ergonomically superior to western equivalents and thus a pleasure to use. Stylistically they are handsome machines indeed. The lens range for the M42 screw mount is vast to say the least with very high quality optics from both sides of the iron curtain readily available in abundance and still quite cheaply. I prefer my MTL3 to my Nikon FM, my Pentax K1000 and my Minolta SRT101.
I think my very first camera was its little brother . Mine didn't have the self timer and my light meter was a thin black needle that would go up or down. Wish I still had it for nostalgic reasons at least :-)
It was possibly the MTL3 you had as I'm sure that didn't have a timer, but yes the meter was a simple needle. The good news is there are still plenty in existence and very reasonable to buy. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Yeah they're pretty much identical besides that. I just love their reliability and solid build quality. I now own 5 35mm SLR's and I still keep reaching for this one.
Hey! Love your video full of amazing info on this camera I just restored my grandads one but have absolutely no idea what battery to use is there any way you could help me ? Google told me px28 but I can’t seem to make it fit
I'm based in the UK and here the batteries are known as 4LR44's. A 6V alkaline battery and quite easy to get hold of. I'm glad the video was of use to you. Thanks for watching.
Just a quick question if that's OK - does your start counting without film loaded in? I've got 2 mtl50's one doesn't count unless film is loaded, the other counts even when not loaded with film and resets when I open the hatch - they both take photos - so odd
Hi Harry, yes of course. Mine does start counting without film but as you say it resets when the door is opened. Perhaps that was a change that Praktica made at some point, I'm not sure. As long they work though eh?
Hi Jon, I work for Praktica and we're interested in adding your review of the MTL50 to the Praktica website. Please could you let me know if this is ok or if you'd like any further details. Thanks, Christopher
Hi Christopher. Absolutely, I would be delighted. Please send me a link if it goes ahead. I've also a video on the BMS Electronic and hopefully more coming soon.
@@sccjono Hey Jon, if you take a look at the Praktica website (don't think I can link as YT will block the post, but just google it) your videos are on the Heritage page as well as the Video Reviews collection. They make a really nice addition to the site, so thanks for letting us add them :)
This video is over two years old, no particular point to it, I was just learning is all. Having said that, I'd check your audio settings as I can hear myself fine and nobody else has mentioned a problem.
I’ve got my grandads old camera and seeing this video made me feel overwhelmingly happy
The greatest comment. I know exactly what you mean. I hope it brings you lots of joy.

Thanks David, yeah its one of a few I keep coming back to. I just got hold of an LTL but it's going to need some work. Thanks for your support.
I just added film to my very first Camera (also Practice MTL50) according to your video and it worked perfectly! Thank you for the great guidance
