Just wanted to say I loved the video and I learned so much watching it and also the line chemistry video! Great work and very insightful! Franchise mode will be much more fun for me now!
Thanks so much man!! :) It's so much more enjoyable when you know what's going on! Let me know if you ever have any other questions! Also my franchise mode series may help if you ever need small tips on things like postseason performers, offseason advice, etc. :)
My current amateur scouting strategy is to have basically 2 Scouts per region, and have one scout be a 'B' or better. The stronger scout handles Round 1 and 2, keeps scouting them over and over until their reports are complete - first Potential, then Skills, then Playing Style, and finally Character if I have time. The weaker scout handles the lower rounds. Once I see the strong scout ID'ing a guy as AHL potential I don't scout that prospect again. Instead the good scout then follows-up on the 'elite' leads the weaker scout finds. I make a list of how many R1 and R2 prospects there are for each round, and the really prospect-rich Regions may get 3 Scouts and the weaker Regions get only 1 Scout that year. ROW and Allsvenskan almost never have a player let alone someone in the top 3 rounds. Usually only one or two of the four European leagues will have a first-rounder. If you're not scouting anyone below CS rank 100 (end of 3rd round basically) you're prob ok. But sometimes I find Elite Low/Med below round 3 and they have amazing value in trades for such a low pick. If a draft is weak, I may try to trade current picks to be for the next year. If I think I have a lot of lower round Elites I can take a shot at (meaning they were scouted at least twice) then I may trade down a little to get 2 picks instead of 1 and hope I get lucky (like trade a 3rd for a 4th and 5th, if I don't like who I'd otherwise pick with my 3rd rounder) If I'm scouting thoroughly then when I make trades with the CPU, I always try to get an extra low rounder with which to try and grab a low round Elite. If the draft class is weak I'll try to go the other way - offer several lower picks to try and move up a round in the next year's draft.
Update on my scouting strategy: the above still holds, but with more experience, now for a region where I'm hiring 2 or more scouts (i.e. CHL leagues, Scandanavia/Russia) I'll try to hire one scout who is the highest possible rating, with 'Prospect Discovery' as the tie-breaker. And once I've hired a 'great' scout for each key region, I'll hire a much weaker scout as the 2nd scout (whatever I can afford). The good scout focuses on the top 64 or so in the CS rankings. The weaker scout starts at 65 and just goes straight down the line - they are usually much slower so they won't do many follow-ups. Over time I want to retain my best scouts, even if later on that means I can afford less than 20 scouts total.
Definitely! That's a huge plus if there's a tricky region like the EBEL or NLA and you have the flexibility to dedicate a scout to becoming proficient in that region
I used to scout every player, and was getting top 6 forwards top 6 forwards (on and on and on) and now I know why! You know, I thought about kind of deviding it up like that. Edit: 2 time cup winner. Thanks man!
Thats a nice vid! But for my part I used View draft class after 1 round of scouting , and I sorted the potential, its way more easy to rescout and you will save a lot of time because you dont have to go on every region.
I posted before, but I needed to do a follow up: For anyone doubting the process, do NOT. It is VERY tedious, but when you are in round 6, and have a 4 bar, top 4 D sitting there at pick 156....you just smile and select the player.

Just a question for you.. You ignore AHL prospects which most people do HOWEVER in my franchise modes I am very active in managing my AHL team, do you pay much attention to your AHL team? My current franchise mode in NHL 21 in 20 seasons we’ve won 5 Stanley Cups and 6 Calder Cups, I also let my players marinate in the AHL 2-4 seasons before bringing them up, unless they are a top pick
I see what you mean! I definitely pay very much attention to the AHL but I want players with good potentials to be there, mixed in with veterans who I can trust. It's a balance between guys who are 26-30ish who are there to help out and won't grow AND the prospects in the system. I'll play top 9 and bottom 6 potential guys in lower roles, but I'll eventually let them walk to free agency and get someone else (through free agency or draft) who will replace them. Does that make sense?
@@Data782 yep totally 👍 I do the same thing and usually in pre season is were I flesh out my AHL roster with NHL veteran free agents. Also for AHL goaltending sometimes if I have a goalie I’ve drafted in the range of 73-75 overall I’ll sign them to a 6-7 year deal at 1m per... a little unconventional but it guarantees me a solid AHL goalie and a decent 3rd stringer
Great video man! One question, do you know how to properly grow a medium top 6 forward or top 4 defence. Sometimes they grown to an actual top 6 around 87 overall, and then sometimes they grow to an 80-82 overall. Just a question and keep up the content!
Thanks man! Growth in general has to do with playing players in their proper roles and maximizing chemistry. For example, I'd rather have a 78-79 OVR player with Top 6 potential play on a +5 first line in the AHL than a +1 4th line in the NHL. Once he's actually listed as a 3rd line scoring forward or something (around 81-82 OVR), play him on that 3rd line but try and get him a +3 or +5 so that he really explodes! At the same time, some players are just busts and will never ever grow. In my franchise mode series, this was the case with Ville Heinnola who had top 4 potential and played top D pair in the AHL for 4 straight seasons and put up great numbers but never ever grew past 77 OVR. Another notorious offender of not growing is Jamie Drysdale. But like I said, maximize chemistry and player role for the best chance of growth. You can get ANYONE to grow with the right chemistry! Let me know if that helps!
Would it be a good idea to change scout guy to an area during the season? To have another point of view from another scout ? If a scout makes two report on the same player, it will be the same thing!
I'm so mad I quit my season and losing in the first round to Lightning.. I had a franchise guy drafted I didn't even sign him in the first year and he was an 87 overall at 18...... so mad
Don't have any time in what sense? If you mean literally don't have time in your every day life, then I would just limit myself to scouting the first few rounds (no matter their potentials). Or, if you really don't have time at all, setting your amateur scouts to "auto" wouldn't be the worst idea! This method will help you to uncover more but other ways will still give you a good overview of the draft class :)
@@Data782 thanks for the quick response. What I mean by not enough time is that I only play 3 times a week for 45 minutes and I find this game very important and time extremely precious.
You kind of mentioned it in the video, but how many scouts do you hire for each region/league? Like you have 2 or 3 for the WHL, 2 for the OHL, and so on. So I guess the question is how many scouts do you hire for each region?
It all depends on the number of top 300 prospects in the region! I scout about 20 prospects at a time per scout so if 2 scouts can cover 40 players who are ranked 1-250ish, I'll keep it at two. If, however, after those 40 prospects, I'm only at rank 100 or so, I'll definitely need a third. My breakdown is 2 for WHL, OHL, QMJHL, Russia, SHL, and Liiga (with 1 extra scout that I usually swap between any of the WHL, OHL, or QMJHL depending on which has the most prospects in any given year). After that, 1 scout anywhere else worth scouting (USA West, Central, East, DEL, Extraliiga, etc). Does that help?
Yes, it seems like it is! All of the players that may be scouted are already available to be scouted and "finding players" doesn't provide you with any additional names so I really don't get why that is even an option
question: if you assign 2 or more scouts to the same player and they’re all scouting potential, does that mess it up? i’ve been doing that all season and i’m in May and there’s only 4 fully scouted elite players.
That seems to be very much up for question. So much so that, in my updated tutorial that I'm working on right now, I decided to no longer recommend doing that. Although it MAY help sometimes to uncover potential faster, it seems as though that is not very common. So, if I were you and assigning multiple scouts to one player wasn't working out, would just continue with one scout and use the other to scout player types - another important element of scouting. Hopefully that helps!
my logic is if you have multiple scouts in the same region, assigning multiple scouts to the same prospects (sometimes both doing potential, sometimes one doing potential and other doing skills assessment) would get those prospects potential and skills done quicker. however, i’m now in late june and 5/10 possible elites are fully scouted and the other 5/10 have not budged from “inaccurate” even though i’ve scouted these players multiple times since they’re top-30, first-round prospects. anyone have the same issue or have a fix?
@@luregraff That's always suuuuper annoying. You would think that that would work but not always in this world 😂 The only thing that I could think of is that it has to do with the overall and region efficiency of the scout
Data782 gotcha. i don’t get why they can’t just have a little tutorial anywhere on how scouting actually works. my method is basically just only scout potential and be sure there’s only 1 scout assigned per player, seems to work alright.
Because some elite players will be ranked much lower! For example, let's say I'm in the third round and there are two MED Elites slated to go late. I would rather take a MED Top 6 prospect at 78th overall and then one MED Elite at 147th followed by trading a random AHL guy in my system and a 7th for another 5th round pick to take another MED Elite. If I used my two picks to just select those MED Elites straight up, I'd be missing out on the possibility to get another good prospect in my system for basically nothing. Since the AI GMs never really reach, you can bank on those late MED Elites to go where they're ranked and you never have to take them super early! Does that answer your question? :)
is it possible for a player ranked really low turn out to be a hidden gem? I usually don't bother scouting 19 and 20 yearolds. I scout potential, strengths & weaknesses and their ratings. Don't you look at your scouts' rankings rather than CS ranking? How exactly does having a gem affect a player?
A hidden gem in terms of being a good NHL quality player? Yes, definitely! 20 year olds are rare (but may still have some potential for trade value) but definitely don't give up on 19 year olds - especially after the first few years when everyone is generated. I look at both scout rank and CS rank but can rely a bit more on scout rank IF the scouts are highly rated and its 4-bar guaranteed. Otherwise, it's hard to trust. Having a gem pretty much just tells you that they have a higher chance of being a good player but not necessarily a star. Hope that helps!
do you have any thoughts on the "gem" picks? nobody seems to know what they do exactly, the only info I can find is that green gems are a good thing and red gems are a bad thing.
In NHL 19, the gem/bust system seemed to be pretty reliable. Gems would eventually be NHL calibre players and busts were to avoided like the plague. However, it seems as though something has changed in NHL 20. I think they revamped this a little bit because of all the "MED Franchise" goalies that you could draft late in the draft. Now, gems seem to be more 50/50 while busts should still be avoided. I've drafted multiple gems who never really turn out, despite the game suggesting that it knows how the player's development will go down the road. They're worth drafting, especially if they're late, but not always a guarantee!
I usually try to draft them, sometimes trading down so that my next pick is right near them (in order to get that pick plus a lower pick... which I'd use to grab a possible Elite med/low guy). Usually I still won't draft Gems unless they are at least a 'medium' (not a low) as a Top 6 Fwd or a Top 4 or 6 Def.
I setup my scouts like you and sim to February when there report should be done. But the assignments keep getting extended and switched too different players than I originally assigned them too. Is this because my scouts are low overal?
@@saiyanlifestyle3707 That's up to how you'd like to manage your team! If you do want to keep your core together, extending them for as cheap as possible (about 85% of asking) in the summer of their final year of RFA eligibility is usually the best that you can do
Not related to scouting but I have a question but would you be able to start new franchise mode but want another franchise mode roster on that new franchise mode that?
You want to use your own custom rosters for a franchise mode? If that's the case, go to "Rosters" and make that your active roster. Then, when creating your franchise mode, verify that you're using those created rosters and not a different version
Thank you. After the patch, I do auto scouting and obviously have tons of holes lol guess I gotta do manual. I'm gonna sub, and hopefully soon you have the updated one up. Thanks!
@@coryharder191 Thanks, Cory! :) I had a whole video ready to go but ended up having to scrap it due to the glitches 😂 With school and other uploads to get done, I'd estimate the updated version to be up in 1-2 weeks.
I wish there were an actual answer to that question 🙄 The only suggestion that I can give you is to make sure that the scout is as highly rated as possible. Scouting a player multiple times with an A rated scout should work over time (in theory). Some players are just stubborn and don't want to reveal themselves 😂
Data782 also, question unrelated to this, do you consider editing a players play style via edit player tab “cheating”. Or does it make sense since you are the manager.
@@Hunzy I'm an advocate for realistic player type changes! If I have a "sniper", for example, who consistently scores 13G/54A, I believe that it makes much more sense to change him to a playmaker. Should I not just because EA has deemed that player to be how he is? I see player types as an indication to how he plays, not a set in stone kind of thing. If I'm the manager and I go tell my grinder to be more of a power forward, is anything actually changing? No. Just the label. So, for chemistry, blame EA for a broken system that limits what you're able to do with your players. Why should I be punished by EA deciding that any player deemed "2-way" is incapable of making his teammates better? I say go ahead and make realistic changes, obviously not anything like a 5'8" playmaker becoming a power forward haha. I talk about this throughout my franchise mode series and in my tutorial video on line chemistry!
Data782 I fully understand how to make +5 lineups, but if I need a power forward I usually try to get a guy above 6’ and weight a decent amount just for some sense of realism, if my guy is a high overall and a center, I make him a playmaker if I need one. And plays like Elias Pettersson I usually make the snipers.
I don't have a video on chemistry alone but you could check out my Anaheim Ducks franchise mode - specifically the last episode where I sim to the end of the 25 years. The best technique I've found is to get an offensive coach and not only have +3 and +5 on the top lines, but always a +5 on the PP. You can have this by having mostly OFD, PLY, and SNP on those lines but there's more to it when it comes to line fit. It can get a bit too complicated in my opinion. Hopefully that helps a bit but feel free to ask any specific questions
Data782 yeah I’ll check it out. I’ll be honest with you, I haven’t been impressed with the franchise mode feature. I miss the old be a gm, where at least you could maybe move teams after a few years. I’ve actually dusted off my old 360 and been playing nhl 2k8 season mode. It’s so much more in depth than EA’s attempt of a hockey game
Data782 that part works fine I’m just trying to figure out which option I need to tell him or her to do so they go and scout line fits of the players like you did.
@@ironseguin9838 The option is something like "Team lines and strategies" and then you choose the team and for how many weeks you want them to be scouted
For my current franchise I have fog of war for OVR off, but all the other fog of war 'on'. Which makes Pro Scouts in NHL/AHL pretty important, re: trades, and even free agents of any kind. I like it so far. Usually I have 2 NHL and 2 AHL scouts and switch them to cover the other half of the division in their league at mid-year.
Pretty much! The only issue is that there seems to be some glitches with the scouting system as a whole. For example, it seems that some prospects are just un-scoutable, among others. Once those are fixed, this system of scouting will still be good to go!
are you sure that scouting a player twice does ive been doing this method for the past ten years in my franchise mode and cant find any prove or even evidence that scouting a player twice does anything please respond
No, I can't be totally sure. However, in my experience, I believe that it does help! Unfortunately that's what most things are in an EA NHL game haha. Also, this scouting system is pretty new so anything that you know from years before that won't be applicable :)
@@Data782 i get that its just one time i found a guy in a small league in Europe and he had two bars for franchise pot in February and because it was such a small league i scouted him 6 more times before the draft and his pot stayed the same 2 bars for franchise going 206 overall btw and he only ended up being a low elite
@@jackjones4412 I think that has to do more with the quality of scout than the number of times scouted. It's definitely true that a case like yours could happen and you only have him two bars uncovered, meanwhile another player is scouted twice and is fully uncovered.. That's sometimes just the broken system, unfortunately, no matter how many times you scout :(
Depends on the number of prospects that are in the region. Usually my breakdown is 2 for WHL, OHL, QMJHL, Russia, and SHL then 1 for USA West, Central, East, Extraliiga, NLA, EBEL, etc
Or I found another way that takes up far less time and it's 100% accurate. The day before the draft, Save on another file. Then draft. Every player picked will have their actual rating. Write down the names that you feel is worthy and do this for each round.. Then back out and and reload your draft day. Boom. Every true rating of every player.

Data782 Yes it does. Thanks a lot.
@@jamesbjorklund9543 Perfect! My pleasure :)
I usually send my scouts out to find players for the first two months. Is that a waste of time?
Great video
Thanks man - glad I could help
I noticed you sort your draft class or scouted players via scout rankings. Why don't you sort via the potential so your elite players are in order?
Wow man really good video
Appreciate it man! 🙏 Enjoy the rest of the NHL content :)
I did this but the players were light grey aka uncertain and I ended up getting tons of flops
Unfortunately you can't really trust two bars or less :( The uncertainty is likely due to lower rated scouts?
is it possible for a player ranked really low turn out to be a hidden gem?
You may have "auto scouting" on! Check out your settings and verify that amateur scouting is set to "manual"

@@tommytoal3191 It's my pleasure! :) Welcome to the team!
How do you scout the random EA players that have no info to them?
Same system! Scout "potential and comparison"
@@Data782 last question. What about when all the core players want massive contracts? Like $10+ million. Should you still keep them together?
This working in 21 as well? I ask cause the video is 6 months old
Yes indeed! :) Although I'll put out an updated version soon now that the scouting glitch has been patched
@@Data782 one last thing, is it safe to still use this? I wouldn't imagine too much being different.
@@coryharder191 Oh yes, absolutely! An updated version may be more clear and concise (plus a better mic now 😂) but the principles all remain the same!
He has auto scouting off I’m assuming then right?
Yup! Pro scouting on auto but fully manual amateur scouting
I swear I scout a player 5+ times who’s 2 bars medium elite and it never increases, I always do potential and comparison. Do you know why?
Data782 because I do change players if I need to, and just wanted to make sure it’s not considered “cheating”
Do you have a video on chemistry?

Does anyone know which option to choose with your pro scout to scout the team lines and fit?
You should be able to press on your pro scout from the scouting menu and then move to that option! You're having an issue?
Data782 that part works fine I’m just trying to figure out which option I need to tell him or her to do so they go and scout line fits of the players like you did.
@@ironseguin9838 The option is something like "Team lines and strategies" and then you choose the team and for how many weeks you want them to be scouted

Data782 I’ll definitely check it out!!!
Does this work in NHL21 ?
Pretty much! The only issue is that there seems to be some glitches with the scouting system as a whole. For example, it seems that some prospects are just un-scoutable, among others. Once those are fixed, this system of scouting will still be good to go!
Here's an update! :) ruclips.net/video/1APCgDzvceU/видео.html
are you sure that scouting a player twice does ive been doing this method for the past ten years in my franchise mode and cant find any prove or even evidence that scouting a player twice does anything please respond
