I was stationed there at the same time you were 1977 to 79 I worked right across from the main headquarters in the ministration building only five women in the building next to it in our barracks remember walking up that cobblestone steep Hill to go to the gym they would have boxing matches there.
'62-'64 as a 7th Army truck driver [12th Trans Co in Boeblingen-near Stuttgart] we would get missions to haul for Infantry / Armor/ and other Units. Transport troops from various areas up to Wildflecken for training. Also went to Graf and Hohenfels. The monastery had double bock beer and when there was a break in the training my Unit would haul Troops up to the monastery. Funny thing, some of us drivers would get so tipsy, the infantry guys drove our trucks back. Ahhh the good ole days. Another name for Wildfleckin was "Wild-chicken".
My Dad was stationed at wildflecken 1956-1959 For a time we lived off the base on a German Farm. The farm was a great experience. Then moved onto the base. There were a bunch of us army brats living up on that mountain. We were like wild Indians playing in the woods winter, spring, summer and fall. From a kids view point great years to have lived there My Dad would comment sometimes how it was tough holding maneuvers in the winter. He was stationed in Austria and Germany for 10 + years Survived world war 2. Bataan Death March, Hell Ships, Japanese imprisonment for 3 1/2 years. Cold in Wildflecken? He didn't care he was a survivor. Miss you Pops
Barbara I was a 75 Charlie next to the MP building where the old theater was our barracks was there in the office was next door next to the main headquarters were you in that same building
Stationed in Scweinfurt 2009-2012 with the 44th Expeditionary Signal Battalion. This is where we held the "2 liter challenge" upon returning from Afghanistan. Love this place.
Just to follow up one of the comments about the Europeans invading the U.S.A When I wrote about being in Wildflecken it was from a kids perspective. A little background. While my Dad was an American soldier. My Dad married a German Fraulein. My mother survived somehow the Bombing of Dresden when the British and Americans bombed the shit out of it. My Dad survived the Bataan Death March imprisonement by the Japanese. The global war at that time somehow brought my parents together When we lived off the base On the German farm I played with the German kids we all got along. When we lived on the army base I played with kids of all kinds of different races black, brown, yellow, white. We didn’t think about differences. It’s the fucked up leaders of this world political as well as religious that keep drawing everybody into conflicts over their various ideals and the masses suffer the consequences Perhaps we should be like children innocent. The Bible In Matthew the fourth chapter describes the true ruler of this world in the mean time I look forward to the day when the prophecy in Isaiah 2:4 will come true “Learn War Anymore”. As long as there is Patriotic nationalism from all sides war will continue. I throw my vote in for a real government God’s Kingdom. Isn’t that what the Lord’s Prayer is all about? Jesus didn’t have any use for the governments of this world as well as it’s hypocritical world leaders political as well as religious There’s no God Bless any nation of this cruel world
