LSV's memory recall in this draft is off the charts. Providing strong banter/commentary while having the highlights of basically every deck in the cube is insane.

Love Martin Juza. Been watching him for a long time and am so glad for his part in making this happen. Really has been an amazing event. Thank you and BK for covering this with such genuine excitement. Was a very unique experience, even through all the beats.
As an aside, I think apart from having a good memory, it makes it way easier to remember when you think of the archetype and cards you already naturally associate with that than to memorize cards individually. It’s part of what makes LSV so good at magic. He sees decks as their objective for winning and the cards that make that happen, rather than just memorize a deck list (although with a good memory you can do that too😅)

Maybe they could have also done coverage for the qualifiers or something.

I don't think that's true, average level seemed relatively low.
But Luca opening Ancestral, Mox Jet and Time Walk supported by Snapcaster and Spellseeker is really strong.
If I was at the table I would try to go for combo, because Luca's deck is unbeatable with a fair deck I feel.
Maybe with an uber aggro deck, but this cube was way less aggro than the current one.
Apart from the power I wish all these players would prioritize the strength of their own deck more.
The experience of the event + the chance of winning it is worth more than money I strongly feel.

Some of the picks were questionable...for the cube list as well. A lot of cards there that got cut for honestly power level reasons quite some time ago, 2-3 years range...maybe they're expensive-ish money draft cards and I just don't know? Bitterblossom, mindslaver and jackal pup come to mind.
Or are there just recent sets they can't get paper cards for for some reason, and they have to find suboptimal replacements?
The power opens were great, seeding them at the back of the packs was pretty smart, felt like it helped keep the tension for the whole pack vs opening it first and now the rest of the pack is whatever.

There's an article from Ryan Spain on the MTG website about it. They wanted to curate for nostalgia as well, so a lot of powerful newer cards (Minsc & Boo, Hullbreacher, Bowmasters, Bombardiers, Gut, etc) were cut in favor of more nostalgic cube archetypes like Splinter Twin & Staxx.

Luca opened amazing, what a luck box LOL
He also drafted very well, but the Taiga pick was really, really tilting me.
He opened such value already and the Polluted Delta would make his deck much better.
I think it's also slightly rude to the other players that didn't open power or much value, let them have some crumbs at least.
Maybe I'm a bit biased because I really dislike rare picking and hate drafting, especially on the cost of your own deck.
Rochester drafts seem really nice, because there's an extra skill needed to do well.
Obviously one could be really bad at it, but open power and still have a decent deck...
If you can remember it all it makes a lot of difference.
But the biggest gain is when you are aware of which colours and strategies drafters are likely on.
Literally knowing every card compared to that has only a slight extra benefit.

I don't have a problem with players drafting for cash at an event like this, but that Taiga pick was egregious. I don't know how to do the maths on this, but I wouldn't be surpised if that pick was actually negative EV.

Also... why is this cube so weak? So many of the cards in the list were super out of date for a vintage cube. The power level on cards was like a cube built in 2016

    So were the packs seeded?
Since each piece of power was always the last card revealed?

    • @bondeulv
      @bondeulv 3 месяца назад +2

Most likely not seeded. Once they took out packs, they could've looked at the cards and chosen to put the power in the last slot. That's the more likely thing.
There were at least two packs where the power was not the last card revealed.

I think he took the grave titan over Fetch because it's a bonkers card in a stalled board state, and every deck here is going to be much worse than a normal vintage cube deck because people are taking expensive cards they won't play like Moat and Candelabra.

Part of the spectacle is seeing someone open a Black Lotus that they actually get to keep. Besides, the 'rare drafting' adds a different dynamic and makes the draft go in directions you wouldn't necessarily expect.
