Hi Neil, I wanted to send an extra thank you for a while. I now went back into your extensive back catalogue to do that on this video, one of many of your pure gold tutorials for the Alfisti community. So, thank you and all the best.
Thank you for another great video, this one will be RUclips's greatest hit for Alfa owners. Great to see the subscriptions growing too, 1.7 K and counting. Unfortunately I can only subscribe once.
What a great vid Neil and a great reference to anyone doing this themselves . Talk about a lot of bolts to remove . As soon as you put that Alan key into that bolt l knew it was going to be a pain ,great workaround though thanks for sharing the info and also impressed about how clear your info is given
Great video. I have done this job myself now. I took the engine out to do the head gaskets and I have to say that doing the timing and belts afterwards was fairly straightforward with the engine out, but would have been very difficult with the engine in situ. It would be very hard to see if, for example, the water pump mating faces are properly cleaned up. It would be good, Neil, if you could spend a bit more time on things which are second nature to you but might be new to viewers. For example, setting up the dial gauge and getting TDC , or getting the tension on the cam belt tensioner correct - perhaps zoom in on the marks to be aligned. These were both things that I had to search around to get information on. Thanks for putting these "how tos" on RUclips, I will be doing my rear brake pads next, following your guide on those.
I’m twisting spanners down here in Oz on the edge of the outback, got 1 of these jiggers in my shop for a cam belt and water pump, your video has given this old Holden mechanic great insight, avagoodweekend
I’ve just put the job on hold to try and get hold of a set of those cam locks, with the rarity of these cars down here I’m covering all my bases to ensure I do it all properly
I never used to worry about my 164 Twin Spark engine which was pretty bullet proof, but by heaven I lost sleep over the cam belt in my 164 24 Valve. I still loved the car and miss them both now I am Alfa less. Its true that all the cam belt failures seemed to commence at the 50,000 + mark. A bit of a comeback from Alfa's original 75,000 recommendation which was rather like playing russian roulette. Thanks for a great video.
Thanks for the video. Wow, its a lot of work... more so if the engine was still in the car. Re-confirmed why I'm happy I left it to my local Alfa garage :-)
Great video. Must admit the grinding with an open engine was hard to watch😟 (I did actually look away during that part😄) Where can you buy the correct cam locks? Just bought a GT, so I will be attempting this in the near future... Thank you for taking the time to film this and allowing all of us to look over Your shoulder👍
Thanks. Super imformative. I'd love to have a spider with one of these motors. But only if I knew a good local specialist. My local dealer is useless. No way I'd want to tackle more than an oil change. Too many hard bits and traps for the Alfa newbie.
Doing this V6 timing belt is so easy with the engine is out, doing it in the engine bay is a totally different job, with the lack of space between the engine and the offside chassis leg in the way. But I’m the Alfa 166 model it’s much easier as there’s no chassis leg in the way, apart from the power steering bottle reservoir in the way.
Fantastic insight to the job, he knows his stuff and more importantly cares ! I couldn’t work out if all pulleys has to come off just to do the water pump ? My cam belt is only 15K old but pump is leaking 3.0 24v 2005 166
You make it look so easy but I guess it's a lot easier with the engine out.. Took me 3 days to do it on my 156. Maybe to cautious since I'd never done it before. :)
Brilliant video as always Neil... 👍🏻 Any chance you could film a cambelt change with the engine still in the car. Or do you always do the change with the engine out? I just cannot for the life of me work out how it's done with the engine insitu... 🤣👍🏻🤣
Thanks for the great video. Good job! I have a question that I hope you will be able to help me with... I am the Happy owner of a tipo 916 Spider 3.2 V6 from 2003 and have during the winter had my cambelts changed by a professional. On my først run after change out, I noticed that with motor in idle speed, the engine (and steering wheel) has quite a lot of vibrations. When accelerating and driving at normal speeds, the vibrations dissapear and the engine is pulling and reving as expexted. Mu question is; can the timing of the of the cams be incorrect even though no warning signs from the dashboard is seen? The Mecanic claims that cam looks were used during the change out of cambelt, which I believe is correct.
Absolutely amazing job and wonderful video, un ottimo lavoro fatto con passione, grazie per darci la possibilità di ammirare come si opera su questi motori....
@Italia Autos In order to change all these parts, do you have to take out the whole engine? Can you remove some panels and gain access to the cambelt parts and change them, put everything back and be done? How much do you charge for a service like this?
I need your help. My - spectacular - 2.5 Busso keep idle to about 650rpm (steady, but too low). Accordingly, entire car tremble during engine idle. Throttle body seems ok (I tried to replace it), plenum and air pipe doesn't get external air, flow meter sensor is ok. In general the engine is great, except for idle too low during engine idle. About you, could be due to one (or some) camshafts pulley with a tooth not in correct position?
I had plans to change the cambelt on a Spider tomorrow but without those camlock blocks I'm not even going to try. And doing it with the engine in place don't look like a easy job.
Getting ready to do this job DIY for my 147 GTA. The accessory belt and its tensioner and idlers were replaced last time as well as the valve cover and spark plug gaskets - do I need to replace these items again this time or skip and do it all again next cambelt change?
Could you please do a buying guide for 156 GTA, what to look for, how often the service should be done (small service like changing filters and oil) and big service (belt, water pump, cambelt, etc) In 3 weeks I am planning to buy a 156 GTA SW and I have zero experience with GTA, I have a Diesel 156 SW.
@@ItaliaAutos That sounds great :) I hope you can finish the project, edit videos and upload that content before September 2nd. If not I will rely on all the knowledge from forums, RUclips etc when I am buying it. If I buy it I will make i video about it and upload it on RUclips.
I have 2 questions. 1 - is it possible change Cambelt if the engine 2.5 Busso ist in a car. Alfa 156? 2 - how i get the new Crankshaft pulley? or who fix this old pulley?
There's 2000 dollars saved for me next time! Could I also ask Neil whats your recommended interval for cambelt changes on these lovely engines? Unless you mentioned it in the video, haven't got all the way through yet. Great video though keep it up, this is both entertaining and informative for all us Alfisti's.
What about changing the cam cover gaskets on the Busso? Both banks of mine are leaking and I've already replaced the rear bank gasket about 2 months ago, but it's leaking again. I found a lot of mixed opinions on how tight to do the bolts back up, whether or not to put gasket maker on the cam pulley side and couple other things. I have just ordered a genuine gasket kit for both banks from Partsworld, if you have any tips on installing these so that theres a higher chance that they don't start leaking again that'd be great. Probably not worth a video but I hear its a fairly common issue with the V6, so it might be. Thanks
What tool do you use to undo the factory crimped bands holding the couplers on to the plenum and intake tubes? (And where do you get new bands and the tool to crimp them?) When I did the belt on my 164 I had to resort to worm gear clamps but the finished job doesn't look as slick and polished when done that way. Why did you put the engine mount back on the front of the engine if it is going in a GTV6? (Or is it going in the 90's version? That would make sense to have the mount then.)
Hi, my name is Paolo Lizzola, I'm Italian, I restore a Lancia Thesis with an Alfa Romeo 3.0 v6 24v engine. Please can you tell me the brand of gaskets you used?
Can you recommend a good book or manual for this type of job(s) that is available for purchase online? Also is the tensioner tool available to purchase?
Perfect timing! (Did you like the pun? 🙄) I'm in the process of doing my cam belt on my 3.2 - currently have the accessory drive belt off, but haven't yet tackled the cam belt as I need a crank shaft socket. I was wondering if there was any way of doing this without the cam locks (£95 + vat!), but as I'm also wanting to change my water pump it looks like I'll need them as you say the inner covers / engine mount need to be removed as they block two of the bolts... :/
Nice tutorial, I have a question I buyed a 3.2 gt and the cambelt was changed last year the car is a bit rough on idle is it possible they did not well their job that the timing is not correct?
@@ItaliaAutoswhat would be other possibility that could cause a rough idle so I could check before I let change the cambelt again or is it possible to correct the timing with the same cambelt since it was changed short time ago and the car made only 2000 kilometers since the change
Mmmm....Busso V6 in a Fiat Multipla.... I am surprised you didn't use pulley locks for these as it would've negated the need to remove the cam covers. Are none available for this engine?
Hi! I was wondering that once you have the camshafts locked in place with cam lock tools, can you remove the camshaft pulleys and put them back on WITHOUT marking their exact positions, and expect timing to work correctly once you have the belt on? Just put the pulley nuts on loose enough so the pulleys can spin, then spin the pulleys until all teeth on the belt fit nicely? Sorry if I'm trying to explain my question badly, never good at forming sentences that actually make sense :) Best
The cam pulleys are free floating and need to be left slack when you install the new timing belt, once the belt is tensioned up to the correct marks on the tensioner you then tighten the 4 cam sprockets as tight as you can, the camshaft are tapered at the sprocket end so they do need a gentle tap with a brass drift to loosen them off
hey neil, at minute 35:00 how did you make sure that the crankshaft does not rotate while tensioning the belt ? im thinking about buying the flywheel lock unless it is not really necessary. could you advise me on this ? thanks alot!
I have watched a lot of your videos on RUclips very interesting, i have a question for you, i am replacing the timing belt, tensioner and bearings when you replace the bearings do they have a spacer behind them on a 3ltr alfa romeo 24v 1998. as you have a lot of experience thought you would be the right person to ask, look forward to hearing back from you. John.
Neil. The GTA I just bought. Belts were done last year. So I’ll do in 2 years. What is the cost with engine in situ change the belt you ask, give or take. Thanks
Is it absolutely vital to install the camshaft bearing caps in exactly the same order? If they are all installed in the correct orientation then is it OK for them to be in a mixed up order? What are the risks?
Right after when you put new cambelt on and tightened the tensioner, you started a timing work. Was there someting out of the camera view, that you were watching? It seemed that there was some other tools (beside cam lock tools)? What was it? :) if I want to repaint the cam gaskets, taking them off while I have not drained the oil , is safe?
I have video request. I'm the happy owner of Gtv V6 2.0 Tb, but the valves need ajdustement as they are ticking. Gets worse as the engine heats up. Quite a common problem I'm told. But I have not found any good tutorials on how to adjust the valves! What special tools you might need, finding tdc and so on and so on. This would be a great tutorial and very helpful! Thank you!
So, if you dont thake the black covers off you also don't need to remove the camshaft pulleys, but the still need to be loosend, right? Also, beautiful tutorial!

the same apart from cam-locks
Neil. The GTA I just bought. Belts were done last year. So I’ll do in 2 years. What is the cost with engine in situ change the belt you ask, give or take. Thanks
Best to contact me near the time.
Is it absolutely vital to install the camshaft bearing caps in exactly the same order? If they are all installed in the correct orientation then is it OK for them to be in a mixed up order? What are the risks?
Broken engine
@@ItaliaAutos is it ok to take the correct camshaftbearing caps from another busso and install them in the same order or is that also broken engine?
hardest timing belt changing ever
Yep.
Hi Neil
What do you use to find TDC and how do you find it?
Best regards jakob
Tdc guage. 👍plenty on ebay
Right after when you put new cambelt on and tightened the tensioner, you started a timing work. Was there someting out of the camera view, that you were watching? It seemed that there was some other tools (beside cam lock tools)? What was it? :)
if I want to repaint the cam gaskets, taking them off while I have not drained the oil , is safe?
Tdc guage
@@ItaliaAutos Ok. What exactly needs to be moitored with it?
Viilutaja it’s monitoring the position of the piston and I’m making sure it doesn’t move or the timing would be out.
@@ItaliaAutos Thank you for explaining that.
On the GTVs, how would you compare the 2.0L V6 TB to the 3.0L V6 in terms of reliability? Would you advise against the 2.0L?
A 2.0l V6.. Alfa don’t do a 2.0l V6. 2.0 TS or a JTS .. Alfa do a 3.0 and a 3.2 V6 in this style of engine
Oh yes they did. But didn't sell them in the UK.
@@Rayfaedundee what are you talking about? There's a 2.0L V6 Turbo Busso.
Thank you!
sorry requests are for patreon members only. join up and ill gladly help out
@@ItaliaAutos hello, now signed up to patreon! So my request should be valid now 😁
@@joakimyliruusi ok thanks not had time to look at it yet. ill try to reply tomorrow. thanks
So, if you dont thake the black covers off you also don't need to remove the camshaft pulleys, but the still need to be loosend, right?
Also, beautiful tutorial!
back engine covers need to come off to do timing. pulleys still need to be loosend yes to tension the belt correctly.
Hmm, I ment the black timing belt covers that you said you wanted to paint... Do those need to go too? And if so, why? I didn't get it from the video
@@picek444 yes they can stay if your not changing the water pump. if you are they also need to come off as they block 2 bolts for the pump.
@@ItaliaAutos I see! Well, thanks for the answers and once again for the great vid! Now I know that it's a hell of job to deal with the timing mechanism correctly!
With the right modified tools it's always possible ;)
Nice! Hundreds of bolts! Is this job possible with the engine installed on the car?
C. A. Oliveira yes it’s just harder to do the side metal cambelt covers and water pump but it’s done with engine still in the car
And no tip-ex in sight! How many hours does the book say to charge for this service? Can it be done with the engine in? Great video 😎👍👏
not sure but id say 6-8
It can be done with the engine in but it takes rougly 8-10 hours if you know what you're doing.
Matej Žagar I did another one today with the engine in.👍. So other specialist had knackered 2 bolts so the welder came out again. All done in 7 hours.
Which size has the big nut of the crankshaft?
42mm i think
