Just bought a 2005 VTX 1300 and was riding it home today. Same thing on mine. The rattling wasn't a clunking sound but rather a vibrating very annoying sound. I pushed on the windshield thinking maybe it was the problem. Then I pushed on the instrument cluster and the noise stopped. Thanks for the tip.
The rattle comes from the gage cluster and the chrome piece coming together. I fixed mine by taking everything off and putting clear silocone around the speedo where it meets the chrome housing.
Nice. Mine started doing it one day on a ride and quickly stopped by the dollar store and stuffed a piece of foam flip flop between there temporarily. Bought the rubber washers the following day and solved the rattle.
You are the man... I thought it was on the front of the plastic and used a foam spacer which worked for a short while! I am head to the hardware store NOW!
Thanks for the vid! Been ust putting this off for ages now, but I'm about to wrap my chrome console cover in some matte black carbon fiber vinyl. Perhaps you have encountered the same issue, but the high sun times in the afternoon just reflects it right back in to my eyes off the chrome. So I'm going to attempt to mitigate that and wrap it. And also a good time to get some rubber washers as well to handle the rattle. I had folded up and stuffed an old business card in between the speedo gauge and the chrome housing. It's been sitting there for years, I'm sure I'll have to scrape it out of there by now the countless time's it's gotten wet and dried, etc. I have a 05 Retro 1300. LOVE IT! Couple of old vids on my channel when I installed some LED lights to it.
I went through hell trying to find out where this noise was coming from. I tore the rear end apart thinking it might be a ujoint, tire, etc , took it to dealer and they couldnt figure it out. Nobody knew. Finally one day I pressed down on the gauge with my hand while riding and figured it out! Remember that noise travels. It sounded like it was coming from below even with no helmet on.
In case for some people that this didn't work for. Install isolating tape on the front metal piece where the instrument cluster is going in :) (the metal piece thru which the wires thru)
I did this same thing to mine. It's better, but still buzzing a bit. I'm ready to chuck the whole dash. Before trying this I tried O rings, foam, rubber. The rubber washers worked to quiet it down the most.
I have an '05 that does the same thing. It started after I added a tank bib. It buzzes like crazy. Going to head to Ace today and get some rubber washers!
Same model here and same sound. The rattle or vibration actually comes from the gauge cluster not seating completely tight between the chrome piece and the tank. I just cut some little strips of rubber (about 1/8" thick) and taped them between the chrome and and cluster on the outer edge where there is a slight groove or recessed area. Either way will fix the problem as it holds the plastic cluster tight against the chrome when re-installed. 👍
I certainly have this problem - gonna try this on the ride home and do the washer thing if that's the problem. It's not a mechanical sound - it's definitely a fairing/plastic rattle at certain RPMs that cause this noise.
I used homemade rubber washers from some bicycle inner tube. Make the holes with a paper hole punch the kids use for school. Go to VTXOA for great tips and $ saving how-to articles.
I know this is an old vid, but I just bought mine on 4-09- 23. And as in another comment mine was the clear lens of the cluster hitting the crime cover. Take it apart as he showed and just but some clear silicone where the lens will meet the chrome cover. Tighten down and white the excess off with a wet rag. I have no more annoying vibration noise
I had the same issue myself and tried the same thing. Unfortunately this helped but the main noise was the tank on my bike. I just removed the centre pin for the gas tank bolt, now it’s rubber on rubber and not a sound.
Did you try just using the Allen wrench to tighten them first? That's all I did-problem solved. It does seem to repeat after quite a few miles, but it takes 10 secs to re tighten. No need to go through all of this maybe.
Did you know there is a $5 adhesive foam block from Honda that goes under the chrome cover? see #24 at this link. www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/2003-honda-vtx1300-vtx1300s/o/m151223#sch322795
This made mine worse (nobody's fault but mine). My rattle isn't between the plastic and the metal - it's between the plastic chrome and the plastic, clear speedo cover. Crap.
I read on a forum that it is a "#7" rubber washer (3 of them) for the bottom. three bolts, as mentioned.
Keith M Thank You! Checking internet forms didn't even occur to me! #lifebehindbars

Exactly the same issue I have. Thank you very much.
Just did this fix on bike. dANCO 1/4M flat washers 37/64" O.D. are the ones I bought and used. Nice tip on fixing that rattle.. Thank you..
Thanks for sharing this.I believe all vtx 1300`s have this problem.
I just bought my 05 in June and that rattle has been driving me nuts! Thanks for the info
Awesome fix! Ive got the annoying rattle too so I'm gonna give this a try

Thank god...mine does the same...Thanks for the imfo.
My 1300 has a buzz that develops at about 60 or 65 thanks I'll try this fix.
Good call, I have 06 1300R,,,,you have to get creative in finding solutions, good fix
Very helpful!! Thank you!
good to know, i had same problem(s)
there is a rubber piece that goes under there according to partszilla schematic and mine does the same thing i just ordered the part!
Yes. I have the same issue.
I’m gonna try it.
My 06 1300c has this problem going to fix asap
I had the same issue myself and tried the same thing. Unfortunately this helped but the main noise was the tank on my bike. I just removed the centre pin for the gas tank bolt, now it’s rubber on rubber and not a sound.
Mine too, the tank rubbed through the rubber insulator and the tank was hitting the bushing around the rear hold down bolt.
Mine did that because speedometer was not connected to the inner frame mount that attaches to chrome frame that covers all
Sweat thanks thats the same issue im having got mine 1 month ago and the noose is killong me
I've had the same issue since putting on a tank bib. Not sure whether the rubber washers would help me.
Great fix idea.
My 2005 "rattles". When riding I push down on the gaige cover and it stops I though that cover was the problem.
Did you try just using the Allen wrench to tighten them first? That's all I did-problem solved. It does seem to repeat after quite a few miles, but it takes 10 secs to re tighten. No need to go through all of this maybe.
I had the same issue, I just stuck a thin rubber pad under it.
Thanks bro mine has been doing same
Tanks I have to fix that 😊
SO far , I'm Good with my 2009 VTX 1300 C , Love the Bike, Rides and handles great I think. I'll remember this, Should I hear any noise from mine....
I indeed have the vtx rattle
Thanks great video!!!
Did it work is the big question
It's been a little over two years since I used these rubber washers. Hasn't come back yet.
Did you know there is a $5 adhesive foam block from Honda that goes under the chrome cover?
see #24 at this link.
www.bikebandit.com/oem-parts/2003-honda-vtx1300-vtx1300s/o/m151223#sch322795
Easy fix
I'll have to try that its annoying to hearing it
i did this and it didn't work! I fucking hate this about this bike. This is my only gripe.
Can you place your hand on the cluster or bezzle and have the rattle stop?
This made mine worse (nobody's fault but mine). My rattle isn't between the plastic and the metal - it's between the plastic chrome and the plastic, clear speedo cover. Crap.
