I did always find it interesting. Before Dudley, a lot of fighting game boxers were rush-in heavy bullies like Balrog, but after Dudley, a lot more articulate ducking and weaving started showing up in fighting games.
Dudley, who was possibly based on Chris Eubank, was the original refined British boxer in a fighting game. I think he might've been an inspiration for Steve Fox as well and you can still see his DNA in characters like Akihiko in P4A.
I want to emphasis just how important jumping is for Dudley. He is a character almost entirely defined by his one weakness. A complete lack of a reliable low poke. He compensates for that with one of the fastest jumps in the game with a really low arc, paired with jumping normals that have high hit stun (j.HK in particular). This forces players to react much faster to his jumps than against basically anyone without a dive kick. Most high level Dudley play involves baiting your opponent into playing a traditional ground game to mask your jump-in attempts. Once that is established, his jump in and of itself becomes a mix-up, much like the conditioning that Makoto players do around her dash. Without that one game plan warping intended weakness, Dudley almost sounds completely busted on paper. Amazing defense with above average health, stun and a suite of reversals. Strong neutral when your opponent is approaching due to strong counter pokes/whiff punishes, and probably the best arsenal of anti-airs in the game. Comically amazing offense with plus frames for days, un-reactable high/low mix-ups, high damage, corner carry and set play with the rose taunt. Easily my favorite character in a fighting game ever.
@@damarziman They're actually the remixes from 3rd Strike Online Edition (for PS3/360). Done by a different musician than the one who worked on the original game, and they're definitely interesting to hear as they give off a totally different vibe from the original tracks!
My favorite character in 3rd Strike. He's also one of the main reasons I started to branch from just Ryu and Ken archetypes. Here's to hoping he gets added to SF6 in the future.
As a born and bred Tekken player, I don't go anywhere near 2D games but SF3 to me is just the coolest game ever. Everything from the music, art design, characters.. it just oozes cool. One early memory I have is going to the arcade in the SF bay area 20 years ago, and there was an SF3 tournament there, but it was just one guy playing dudely and if you beat him, you would win like 100 dollars or something. He has like a 50 win streak when I saw it. I doubt anyone here remembers that, but it was at Milpitas Golfland (Used to see JimmyJtran around there). Dope series TBS!
No we are not disrespecting Stuart McLean here. He was a good voice for Dudley. Sure his no dignity line isn’t that as impactful but he still perfectly captured Dudley’s character
When you want to put your opponent in a vortex. Like a gentleman. I've always felt that in an actual boxing match between the two, Balrog get absolutely pieced up by Dudley. Balrog strikes me as kind of guy who'd get frustrated and sloppy if he couldn't knock a guy out inside of two rounds.
Dudley moveset is a whole "Ring ni Kakero" reference. Rolling thunder, Jet upper is the name of power blows from this franchise. His cockscrew blow is similiar to Ryuji "square" attack when his fist is twist. In SF4 he even twist his opponent as Ryuji do. Even Dudley's dive special is similiar to the one of main characters from "Ring ni kakero". Wonder that he don't get Galactica Phantom but Ralf from KOF get it
And thus, the catchphrase "Welcome to Duff City" was born. Also, you never mentionned his Super Arts which only 2 are effective in combat: SA1 (Rocket Uppercut) & SA3 (Corkscrew Blow). One for good juggles & the other for the meter bar.
as someone who needs videos of people telling me why the character is cool to understand their basic gameplay loop, i’ve been wanting something like this for a while! thanks!
I like that theres three stlyes of a Boxer in a fighting game. Your Dudley and Steve: Floatter style similar to Ali. Your Balrog: Heavy style similar to Mike Tyson or Tyson Fury Your Vanessa: Defensive Style similar to Mayweather or Paccio.
Y'know this is ridiculously subjective but i think Dudley is one of the best designed characters in a fighting game. It's just so elegant and satisfying to play. Smooth like butter
My all time fav fighting game boxer, sorry Steve, you're a close 2nd, anyway I always loved playing matches against Dudley with my Ken online, such a fun matchup! :)
Are you going to cover Gill at the end? (know he’s a busted boss character who’s not playable by default n’ all, but the SF series otherwise makes boss characters playable by default in the updates, so I’d say he might as well be covered.)
Absolutely great vid but at 2:12 you actually didn't display the correct input for ducking. It's actually half circle forward not quarter circle forward. Great video nonetheless!
Dumb question but how is the combo at 1:37 13 hits? I see at most 7. One from rose if that counts, one from f+HK overhead, and at most 5 from corkscrew blow no? Am I missing something? Edit: It would appear I missed a video cut. That 13 hit is for a different combo that isn't shown. Just realized it because of the health bars.
It's funny that Dudley has a taunt for an unblockable setup. And has a move called jet upper.
Haha not quite unblockable, just a mix up. But yes the parallels with Bryan are quite funny, especially since they're both my mains.
i believe he also has machine gun blow, which shares the name with bryan's df1 string
Well done 👍
@@Cezkarma Dudley does have unblockables from it actually. But you’re more realistically thinking of oro and Urien when it comes to unblockables.

Thank Mike Tyson for that.
I've waited so long for Capcom vs SNK 3 to hopefully see Dudley face off against Vanessa
This description is still accurate to Dudley...the difference is that it looks different than Balrog while giving a similar result

The transition from the regular character themes to banger remixes are so fucking cool, big fan of it on every single one of these videos so far.
Are these official remixes available to listen to somewhere?

True) SF III strike is the best SF game ever for me) Cool from every aspects
Dudley's 3rd Strike voiceover is still the best. Wish he had it in USF4.
Agreed. That "you have no dignity" always puts the opponent in his place
For sure. If he comes back in 6, I need him with that 3rd Strike energy. Refined yet savage. *"Gutter Trash."*

Much appreciated!
Dudley is my absolute favorite Street Fighter character! Ever since you announced this series I've been waiting for his turn!!

Dudley has never looked better than in 3rd Strike.
Really hope Dudley comes back for SF6 along with Makoto and Q.

I love the Jet Upper side note 😁

I'm curious to see how they'd balance his command dash with respect to drive rush, since they sort of function in similar ways
@@joeschmoe4376 they don't overlap that much in terms of function. If Ken still has his run then Dudley can definitely have ducking.
