If aliens have ever visited Earth, now just consider this:
In terms of distance scales in space, if we imagine creating a scale model where the Sun is the size of a basketball, then the Sun's nearest neighbour, a star named Proxima Centauri is roughly the size of a golf ball (1/7th the diameter of the basketball).
Proxima Centauri is roughly 4.2 lightyears away. One lightyear is just shy of 10 trillion km's. So in rough rounded numbers, it's about 40 trillion km's to Proxima Centauri.
In our scale model, where the Sun is the size of a basketball, to get the correct distance, the golf ball needs to be about 7,200 km's away from the basketball.
In 1977 NASA launched Voyager 1. It's been traveling through space for nearly 46 years. It is the most distant object ever put into space by humans. It is currently about 160 AU from the Sun.
But where Proxima Centuri is 4.2 light years away, Voyager 1 is only 22 light hours away. We haven't even managed to make it one light day away (much less a light year) in 46 of space travel.
If you do the maths, the journey would take Voyager something like 75,000 to 80,000 years to make the one-way journey (Voyager is not headed in the direction of Proxima Centauri. But if it were it would take that amount of time to reach it.) In that scale model where the distance between the Sun and Proxima Centauri is about 7,200 km's Voyager has traveled roughly 3.2 of those km's after nearly 46 years of flying through space.
You might be thinking
"Ah, but we could just build faster spacecraft." and whilst that's technically true, it really misses the mark. 80,000 years, even if we doubled the speed is still 40,000 years. Think about what homo-sapiens were doing on Earth 40,000 years ago. If we made a spacecraft that could go 10 times faster it would still take around 8000 years, an amount of time that is longer than the 'recorded' history of humans (not the whole history of humans just the history long enough for us to have any written record.)
Suppose we want to make the one-way trip in only 100 years. There is no chemical reaction that can deliver enough energy to do that. What if we switch to nuclear propulsion? Nuclear reactions only convert about 1% of mass to energy, even nuclear engines can't do it.
If you get exotic, suppose you use an engine based on matter/anti-matter reactions. Anti-matter is a real thing. Particle accelerators produce tiny amounts of it. If one particle of anti-matter comes into contact with one particle of normal matter, both particles annihilate with a 100% mass to energy conversion. That could get a ship to Proxima Centauri in only 100 years.
The 'problem' with this is that this is physics and not engineering. Laws of physics are not violated. But this isn't the same as actually engineering such a ship. There are a crazy number of other problems that you would encounter if you actually tried to build such a machine. One of those problems would be obtaining the anti-matter. The amount of anti-matter produced by particle accelerators is tiny. One estimate I read is that if you were going to try to get a supply of anti-matter it would cost about 4 trillion US dollars per gram ! If that number is correct, then spacecraft based on anti-matter is probably not on the cards.
Suppose our ET neighbours have figured out how to churn out anti-matter as fast as humans can churn out plastic. OK but remember that this thought experiment was just to get to the nearest neighboring star and it still takes 100 years. A unlimited supply of anti-matter still wouldn't make such journeys easy.
There are alternatives, could you build a solar sail large enough ? In 'physics' sure. You'd need a solar sail larger than the state of Tasmania. In 'engineering' good luck building and deploying a solar sail larger than the state of Tasmania (and how much would that weigh?) How would you even launch it into space? How would you pack it and how would you unfold it when it is ready to fly ? How do you plan to stop when you arrive at the next star system ? How would you keep anything alive for such a period of time ?
These are just some of the thoughts that come to mind when someone says we've been visited by extra-terrestrials from beyond the solar system.
Science fiction stories allow for faster-than-light travel because the stories would be really boring if the authors had to obey actual physics. I'd love for this to be true, but the rational side of me realises that whilst there is most likely life beyond our solar system, we are likely hopelessly exiled from each other.
Ok so youre using proxima centauri as a base , what about other anomalies in our solar system such as jupiters frozen ice moon europa that takes only 3 years to reach? Your entire theory is based upon these "aliens" being an impossible distance away as a result of technology we ourselves have on earth ? They say the nearest inhabitable planet is potentially kepler 186f which is only 500 years way from earth , and thats just based on our current technology.... Your whole hypothesis is clearly overwhelmed by bias.

100% with you. Human-centric is the key. An alien race could exist and thrive for millions of years without a single individual ever being interested in physically leaving their planet to explore space. Exploration as a concept may not even exist for an intelligent species that evolved under completely different conditions. The need to see what's beyond the horizon may be a uniquely human concept.
Exploration and expansion is ingrained in life itself, not just human life, with survival at it's very core. All planets have limited resources and space. All stars have a timer. Eventually, if nothing cathasrophic happens, they all will arrive to the same thing, move forward or die.

How can we assume that all life forms will advance to a technological age on an emerging planet? Today there are many societies on earth , who have maintained a lower tech culture and are thriving well in their own society.

What if it's as simple as, "we're not speaking the same language"? Humans use RF to transmit signals - what if advanced civilizations are using an alternate medium - say, photons (aka: light), for example? We'd be missing it.

the transcension of alien species makes a lot of sense. We are thinking about colonising the galaxy physically travelling through space via aircraft, however its quite possible they've found some sort way to tune in a state of consciousness or occupy some sort of dimension that could be perhaps heavenly, safe and undetectable to us, who knows the true possibilities of advanced technology but it actually makes more sense to go that route
Awareness is known by awareness alone.
The question of "where are they?" is inextricably tied to "when are they?" Our signals/technology would have to intersect and allow for the response time to communicate. Maybe once a civilization reaches a point where a small number of bad actors can do apocalyptic harm, the odds are greatly against longevity, reducing the window-of-opportunity for communication to a tiny sliver of time within the billions of years it might take for intelligent life to evolve. Could be that there are radio signals travelling between stars, even between galaxies, that are nothing but the epitaphs of dead civilizations. Those signals will whizz by at the speed of light, maybe we'll be listening during our sliver of time, and then be forever thereafter unavailable to us. Maybe Voyager-like satellites containing AI libraries are the inter-galactic tombstones that archive the best of a dying alien civilization.
I like to think that if there are highly advanced species out there, they have been aware of us since the signals from our nuclear weapons reached them and that they are waiting to see if we survive Oppenheimer’s folly. We know that intelligence isn’t an evolutionary advantage since it took billions of years to develop here and there is no sign of it in the fossil record. I believe that the great filter is intelligence and that it is very rare to make it past nuclear extinction.
But an 80 light-year radius is a very small region of space. We are working on the ability to study exoplanet atmospheres. I suspect we would have been detectable for centuries if they used this technology. They might have noticed that smoke had a cycle from us heating our cities in the winter.
Let say alien life did detect out nuclear radiation and or detention or work. That would have to be within 78 light years of earth, and or have probs within 78 light years of earth that had faster then light communication, to even know that we have used nuclear weapons or nuclear technologies. Understand that we have only had nuclear technology for 78 years, furthermore we have only had radio technology since 1890, so 133 years so I can confidently saw any alien civilization would have to be within 133 light year of earth to hear us, and that isn't likely that cause due to our early radios were so weak they wouldn't have be able to travel that far. Further more, let's say they used a similar technology to our to read what's in our atmosphere, looking for key signatures or like (oxygen) they could have know that this planet could have life on it for thousands of years, millions of years, but may not have had the ability to know weather their was civilizations unless they continually study our world for thousands of millions of years.
In my belief I would say life itself is far more rare then we believe. Let's take a look at one example. We believe that a primordial ooze started all life on earth, yet we have no figures out what or how that primordial ooze start or what it was composed of, and that having the prefect match of chemical in the right spot with the right about of light/darkness, right about of radiation, gravity, moons, atmosphere is correct, let's just say the change of that happening is 1 in a billion. Now continue let say over the 3.7 billion years life has been on earth, the tittle odds that life will evolve to become intelligent, is 1 and 100 trillion. That would make it so, that the odds of their being planets with life likely, but planets with life and is intelligent extremely unlikely, and extremely rare, and out of the 50 billion galaxies that we can see, each having 300 million earth life worlds which would mean out of the 1.5e19 world that are earth like, only 1500 have intelligent life out of 50 billion galaxies. Now saying out of that 1500 world, how many will make it to space, how many will destroy themselves, how many will figure out how to get to another world, how many????? So the idea that intelligent life has been to earth is low, the likelihood that those 1500 intelligent life world existed at the same time... I'm not sure. Now every number I stated is a guess, need someone with a much high education then me to do this
We show no signs of being an intelligent species. Our history is absolutely filled with violence, murder, lying, deceit, and other awful behavior; we have been at war almost constantly through our history. Even look at the technologies, many of which weren't even the best ones available, but the ones that we used were simply marketed better, or worse, the better ones were sabotaged in order for the inferior one to become the most commonly used, with only the greed of the 'winner' being what made the choice for us. They can then warp from however far away they live to the probe that went off, which might be in the nearest star system to us. Our first nuclear testing was in the early 40s and then along came supposed roswell and alien news in the mid 40s. The closest star system is 4.3 light years away. It would fit the time frame if they were from there or had probes there. Our branches of secret officials hide everything from us it wouldn't be surprising if they are the ones asking aliens to conceal themselves for the fear of humanity collapsing. I dont believe religions have a place in space and only create problems and fighting within a race so maybe they are letting them die down before revealing anything. Atleast from my experience I personally dont think I know anybody that regularly attends a religious mass anymore. The newer generation is moving towards a more scientific stance.

Why would anyone want to do that, chat with Fermi? His last database is from the 50s... The whole discussion is as superfluous as a dead cat in the bed! If none comes up, it all remains a hypothesis, with a very flimsy basis (because it's too anthropocentric). But once we have the first contact, the whole thing is just waste paper. Having made sightings. that were in no way explainable given, our current understandings of the laws of physics or the elements required for any human developed air craft, I have to take issue with Tyson's question of, "Where are they." Keep in mind, I'm not alone in the experience I had.Tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people have seen them. So, to answer his rhetorical question, they're here, now,. Despite what we think we know about the laws of physics.I'm also reminded of the statements by recognized and respected scientists that once made the statement, "Man will never fly." Our knowledge is never complete. If we keep studying things, our knowledge of science changes, grows, and is refined. But first, we have to be open to the possibility.
life becoming digital is just stupid. aside from the problem of needing computers for digital to exist, in a computer's memory, in a computer simulation or virtual world, there are no actual objects or people or places. in a computer simulation or virtual world, a computer is just running calculations using dynamically updated data to figure out what would happen in a given scenario. Then, in cases where there is a monitor or other visual output device attached, graphics hardware/software draws updated images using the aforementioned calculations. if it does this fast enough, you've got a video showing what some hypothetical situation would look and act like. The reality is that there are no actual things in a virtual world in a computer. at best, you'd have have programs that could calculate what particular people would have done in a given scenario using data about that person's brain but the person that was scanned and then who's body was presumably destroyed doesn't actually exist inside the computer, Tron style or at all.
With bcis (brain computer interfaces) in future iterations theoretically it could be used to manipulate dreams in certain ways, with this you can basically create entire virtual realities that are more convincing than real life itself

I think we'd have been "visited" already if it were possible to travel that far given the infinitely and unfathomable vastness of distances. We as humans would have to somehow perfect folding space and time in some way. That is, as we know now, impossible. There's no telling though. We've accomplished many great things thus far in some small steps.

I continue to be astounded at the ignorance of supposed smart people, who have no clue of just how awful humans are, which is why no alien species want anything to do with us. The enormous ego of these people, who just automatically assume we are so fascinating, so wonderful, that everyone would want to rush to our planet and introduce themselves to us.

What if intelligent life on earth is a black swan in the universe? With all the possibilities, science tells us there should be other civilisations. But it is also possible that there aren't any and that we are just a funny coincidence - a whim of nature if u will.

You're not very good at probability then.
You could make the opposite argument: given the abundance of elements that produce life that have been found on other planets, and that each galaxy contains hundreds of billions of stars, and that there are hundreds of billions of galaxies in the universe, you could argue that the odds of life Not happening more than once in the universe is beyond possibility.
Considering the issues we are already facing in terms of resources management and availability, isn't it obvious that we would never have enough resources to venture out of our system? The cost of setting up spaceships of any kind in terms of resources to colonize another planet is just too high for us. We are limited by the access we have at start to those resources. There is simply no way to build an interstellar civilization. Plus considering distances, what is the point of having a colony you can only reach in 50 years? We have colonized for resources, but interstellar ones are just impossible for us to exploit. So considering cost and expected revenue, it seems obvious there is just no interest or case to venturing into space or even physical capability at our level.... so if we are bound to our system, chances are any ETs have the same limitattions which would explain why we have not seem them although they exist fo sure... the filter is just physical limits to growth ?
What if other civilizations are NOT technologically advanced? We seem to assume that others in the universe are so much farther along. Without actually being able to "Date" time, it's conceivable that others may just beginning...so to speak.

Aliens, may not be curious about us, and they could be at a wavelength, beyond our ability to observe them.

Why would they have any interest in our situation? Much nicer planets to visit for a beach holiday.
Unfortunately for us humble ordinary people, the truth will always be kept with some who are blessed with the ability to line up words and sentences that sound sophisticated for us to understand or make sense with; or those who control some sort of military capability and are so secretive that they would keep us guessing what their own fart would actually smell like.

I always wondered if the answer maybe a simple practicality, If you are evolved intelligent life but live on a planet/ or in a solar system with not quite enough raw materials/ resources to either leave the solar system or bring technology to a point to be useful. If one assumes life evolves even a little bit often, then, given the huge number of stars (and other galaxies), the likelihood of goldilocks conditions is pretty substantial.
If one posits life evolves elsewhere (even highly improbably) then the time is so vast and the number of potential sites so huge one has great difficulty in ruling all of them out (from developing into advanced species) - no explanation makes good sense.
The obvious conclusion seems to be the premise - that there is life elsewhere - is wrong.

Our star does not shine brightly enough to attract attention amongst the other 2 billion stars. If they are here then they discovered us by accident. The problem is this, the Pheonix lights, this thing that flew over that blocked out the stars was huge and then it just took off, being chased by 2 F16s. They turned off the ready to launch ICBMs. One landed outside a nuclear base and left marks on the forest floor + radiactivity. But the woohoo got him, that was a duck of around 1 metre. IMHO. !
