Lol it makes total sense. No team should be all that confident in Cousins being the future. Gives the kid a year to sit and develop or to have a backup plan if cousins gets hurt. Not hard to figure out.
Then why did they give him a contract that guarantees him 100 million?
@@Blackhawk25327 Because they were desperate and even the falcons know Cousins has a ceiling even in his best season. They also weren't guaranteed to land Penix in the draft to begin with but once they saw that opportunity they clearly took it. The Falcons are investing in the future regardless.
@bocronfield6478 almost every mock draft and projection had Penix available well after 8, it's why they didn't invite him to the 1st round. They signed Kirk to go "all in" for a superbowl....but now they are investing in the future. They clearly do not have a plan
@@Blackhawk25327 And that's why they're called mock drafts and projections. More than half the time they're not even correct besides certain picks. Nobody really knows what they're going to get in the draft unless you have a top pick and even then there's always the possibility of someone trading up. The Falcons didn't know they were guaranteed to get him with a lot of teams in need of a QB, regardless of what mock draft or projection says. They're better off investing for the future then relying on Cousins to get them to the super bowl which will never happen.

It makes perfect sense. Cousins is old, coming off a major injury, and has never won anything. Of course the Falcons should have drafted a QB.

I'm just glad the Falcons didn't trade back with a receiver friendly team. Otherwise we wouldn't have gotten Odunze at 9.

As a Falcons fan…I’m not surprised anymore..I think they forget there is two sides of the Field..smh
Atlanta was smart to draft Penix. Cousins has a two year window. If he succeeds, then great. If not, Penix will be inserted. The decision was expensive, but in the current NFL, NOT having a QB is no longer an option. Green Bay drafted Love WITH Rodgers playing at an ELITE level. KC drafted Mahomes WITH Alex Smith playing relatively well.

Overpay an aging, no big win, recently injured QB then draft an unproven rookie as backup.... brilliant.
Here is my issue with people having a problem with this. People said so many times last year that the Falcons were a QB away from the playoffs. They have a very very very good roster. Drake is number 1 WR Pitts has crazy upside Bijan is a moster. The O line is decent. They hired Morris who fixes defenses. Kirk money on his contract is only promised for the first 2 years plus he coming off a terrible injury and can easiy be hurt again or not be the same. This was a great draft for QBs. Many of them would have been numbers 1s or 2s easy other years. The next couple of upcoming drafts are very poor in terms of QB play. So if you needed one better got them now because the next 3 years look terrible unless the Manning boy blows up. Plan looks like this. Let Kirk play if he kills great let Phenix sit. After 2 or 3 years if Kirk still worth something flip him for pics like GB did and move on to Phenix. If Kirk doesnt work out you having Phenix to fill in like the Jets could not do last year. This is legit a win/win them if Kirk has something left and Phenix gets to learn.
Kinda like whn washington drafted rg3 and kirk cousins; shanahan had no real intentions for rg3. Kirk has benefited greatly wth guaranteed money!
And that's why you don't do stuff like that. Neither one got a 2nd contract or gave the team a playoff victory
No one should worry about the money and should concentrate on the excellent quarterback they drafted! Cousins is going to have to compete for the job! Are you saying he’s the QB to lead them anywhere? Winning now with Cousins is a pipe dream! You’re saying both arguments! Twas a GREAT pick!!!!

It kills me to see all these so “experts, gurus” slamming the falcons giving them an F draft grade just because they drafted Penix. I think it was an good pick. Kirk Cousins is old and coming off an serious injury is suspect. Penix sit behind him for two years learn the system get adjusted to league be ready to play. Make sense to me.
Falcons whiffed the last 3 draft..what the packers did is they have created a culture of draft and develop young talent and raw talent for the last 30 yrs. What the falcons did was a copy someone else homework and not doing the work.
Draft Brock Bowers and you have the two best young tight ends in football. It's Gronk and Hernandez all over again.
