  • What do Treat Williams and Grays Distillery in Mauritius have in common? Tune in for today's review to find out! Stats:
1731 Fine & Rare Mauritius 7 Year Old Rum (Grays Distillery, Pamplemousses; column-distilled molasses aged in ex-cognac a minimum of 7 years, some with secondary maturation in port or acacia; bottled circa 2022; nonchillfiltered, natural color; 46% ABV), 84+/100
Compagnie des Indes Mauritius 2009 13 Year Old Rum, 20 Month Armagnac Finish for Perola (Grays Distillery, Pamplemousses; distilled from cane juice (apparently?), cask no. GE163, 597 bottles, bottled 6/2022; 53.1% ABV), 85+/100
Compagnie des Indes Mauritius 2010 11 Year Old Rum for Perola (Grays Distillery, Pamplemousses; distilled from cane juice (apparently?), aged in ex-cognac cask no. GE206, 272 bottles, bottled 6/2022; 57.8% ABV), 87/100
New Grove "Savoir Faire" Mauritius Island 2009 Single Cask no. 395 for LMDW (Grays Distillery, Pamplemousses; column distilled from molasses, aged in Limousin, bottled circa 2019 and circa 10 years old; 60% ABV), 85/100
These are all just so much better than a distillery that mostly produces neutral alcohol has any right to make. Previous examples of Grays offerings (a Holmes Cay at • Holmes Cay Rum Reviews... and a TCRL at • Transcontinental Rum L... ) have been excellent, and these four follow suit; the CdI 2010 is a particular gem, a $70 bottle marrying gobs of fruit and rubbery column still notes in a way that can absolutely go toe to toe with TDLs and old Cubans that cost considerably more. The 2009 with an Armagnac finish needs some water to bring it into line but is absolutely delicious in its own right, while the LMDW New Grove pick is deliciously chocolatey and the Fine & Rare 7yo is stylistically a lot like the 2010 (if a modest step down). Read more about Grays from the Holmes Cay folks here: www.rumrevelat.... None of these are likely to make anyone's Top Ten Rums list, but who cares? They're absolutely friggin' delicious and they put a big smile on my face while I was cross-shopping Colombian coffee alternatives just in case.

Love hearing about Gray's. They can tend to be a bit underrepresented in the review world. Thanks for the content!

@@isaacbindman7559 I was thinking of that mild tomato curry it's served in. Ghee I know, it's a staple here at Casa Different Spirits. 😁
