Claude Debussy (arr. Jeremy Edelstein): “La Damoiselle élue”
“The blessed damsel” was originally a poem and painting, both created by English poet Dante Rosetti. The poem was translated into French by Paul Sarrazin, and this text was what inspired the young Claude Debussy to write this piece. Debussy himself had never seen the painting
The story tells us of a young girl who has died before her time and from heaven, mourns her beloved partner who still remains on earth. A beautiful retrospective of our traditional views of death and the afterlife.
