US Navy Operations Specialists get to do this same job on a much larger scale. More intense and more coordination, teamwork, and Training, Training, Training, Training, and when all that is over commence more training. When your responsible for the Safe Transit, Navigation, as well as, the safe return of EVERY shipmate to home port?? Pressure yes, but this isn't a half-ass job. Know it or get out of it. Only those dedicated to their work and pride in their professionalism will make it as an OS. I loved it. Responsibility, priority of work, and working with the Ship's Captain, higher ranking Officers, and even Battle Group Commanders(Admirals) is an absolute blast. When the Ship's CO walks into CIC and Calls your name out saying, "OS2 Steele, Whats the Picture look like?" No better feeling then that.

You're absolutely right !!!! I was on CVN 68, HM 14 (mine warfare helicopter controller), NavPolar Oceanography (shore duty, we all know there nothing for an OS to do land) then back to sea CV 64. Loved being an OS!!!!!!!

Sounds like they made a exciting job boring. USCG 83-96 Was a RD2 when I was medical discharged. As an OS they have more and better shore, but Shipboard section still confusing, yet seem bit boring. Guess lot changed when they merged rates. Sad. As an RD we played with the Navy more, and we use to show them up each and every time. I was also EW (Electronic Warfare) Qualified on the 378's and QMOW on 210's. Do they train now to fight the ship now? Sounds like just to do LE and SAR.
