  • I was ready for a change of scenery so went to Switzerland for a holiday and what a beautiful place it is. Rich flower meadows, high mountain scenery, rivers, streams and lush woodland, it literally does have it all. In this video I manage to capture some lovely plant portraits, an unusual abstract and some landscapes. In my typical style, I show you how each shot is taken in real time and pass on many little hints and tips along the way.

One thing I love about you, Simon, is how you will be in locations with mountains and stunning views, and then get captivated by flowers, leaves, patches of mud, .... It shows so impactfully that beauty is so much a matter of NOTICING.

That mountain picture detail is remarkable. Mega pixels, large format, great glass, all of the above? And the heat- in the winter we wish for the summer, and vice versa.

Loved the ICM daisies. Also appreciated that you didn’t wade into the weeds. I resonate with that in a world where such thoughtfulness is often absent. Also agree with the artistic challenge necessary to convey the beauty in decline or decay. If achieved, is is very satisfying.

Simon, I loved the ICM image and your approach to it. As you say it has painterly quality and reminds me of a Monet painting. I know a lot of nature and landscape photographers don't like ICM, and yet they are happy to accept the blurring effect of long exposures of moving elements such as clouds and water as well as other abstractions caused by reflective and refractive light and camera and lens distortion. The camera will never replicate a scene exactly the way your eye sees it. So to me ICM is a creative and perfectly legitimate way to photograph a scene.

Thanks Simon! The meadow photograph was beautiful. It was a real revelation to see the sky and the distant mountain with the detail, because we couldn’t see that in the footage. Hi Simon - great video as always, thank you. I think we were there at the same time! I love that landscape and the sense of well-being up in the mountains - great time for the sweet meadows as well ( no wonder the chocolate tastes so good😂). If not already aware, well worth checking out a painter called Ken Howard’s Switzerland ‘in the footsteps of Turner’ he captured many scenes from this beautiful country, but his painting of a hut in the Rosenlau valley really reminds me of yours from this video. Fantastic seeing someone who’s work I follow closely in the family favourite location. We also camp by the way - only way we can afford to go 😂 best wishes - David

Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you on this Neil. I needed to re-open the edit to look it up. There were two piano pieces on this film. They were: Italian Winter by the Brightarm Orchestra and Fugacious by Gavin Luke. I suspect it is the first that you are referring to. Thank you so much for noticing the music. Mein Gott Simon, what a great video! Although my favorite was the dandelion pair, I was hugely impressed and envious that you successfully focus-stacked and exposure blended the flower/barn/mountain scene in the wind with the flowers clearly moving quite a bit. I delete many attempted focus stacks because the flowers are all over the place. (Oh, by the way, we are forecast to reach the mid-40's C on Wednesday!)
