    Thanks for this. I was going to ask what spec you were running. I have an Intel i7 and struggle to get anything higher than a P90.
    Why was yours running so well? Is it to do with the roms you overwrite at the beginning? I just used the stock options.

      Nothing special in my specs.
      I5 4690K 3.5GHZ.
      XFX R9 280 1000MHZ 3gb
      16 gb ram.
      I had it running on windows 7. Now is running on windows 10. The files are the same, just overwritten the files to avoid additional steps. Just uncompressed.

      I found my range between those values 100 - 120 MHz ... below that my games lose fps and above it Pcem starts complaining ..... balancing the performance will depend on the host rig but I'm satisfied with my results with it .... at least better than VirtualBox by miles.
      I forgot to add you should enable Voodoo2 in Pcem and install it's driver if you intend to play 3D stuff , it will greatly improve the quality.

    Hi, thank you for the tutorial and the files, everything works fine. I read in comments that you have i5 4690K 3.5GHZ like I do, so I am wondering what are the best CPU and GPU you managed to emulate using your CPU ?

    • @MavG
      @MavG  4 года назад +2

      Well. to be honest, i had once a while (before my hard drive went broken), Windows xp, even i played a couple of games with no problem. In that time i had windows 7 so Windows Xp is the most recent Os i emulated. That and Kali Linux , both version with no problems and both using Virtual Box.

      @@antoniorsoftware every i used with pcem worked great with no problem. So no problem found with any machine. As for gpu everybody seems to agreed with vodoo graphics which is the best for gameplay, again you can try vodoo or any of your preference.
      So at this point your cpu and gpu is more than enough to play.
      You can switch between machines and see how behaves even if you have already installed you Os.
      If you want to even improve further your gameplay with the sound you can configure munt32 with pcem tto emulate those games that use mt-32, the sound is more beatiful.

    May I ask what the benefit is for using Windows 95 over 98SE? I gathered everything on WIndows 3.0 - 98SE just worked best on Win 98SE. But now I'm curious, but also too lazy to set up BOTH and compare for the games I play. Thank you to anyone for any feedback

    • @MavG
      @MavG  4 года назад +1

      In theory windows 98 would be more good for games but also you started to lose control in terms of commands and dos even if there. Of course thats my point of view. If you have a problem you would go to autoexec or config and starting to change the settings there. Also in general terms is how the people like the Os of preference. I grew up with 3.11 but i prefer 95 slightly more.

    Hi, followed your tutorial. It worked great until 10:58 when you have to load the Windows 98.iso. Nothing happens when I load it and windows doesn't seem to pick it up. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?

    • @MavG
      @MavG  5 лет назад +2

      Hi, Thanks for watching. Ok, it seems when you try to select the image doesn't happen anything. Let me rephrase the steps, surely is a step skipped:
      Please take a look at this:
      1. 04:19 Make sure this step is not skipped, because if this is not activated is like you don't have a physical unit cd-rom drive. You can open up pcem to check this out.
      2. In the minute 06:37 i opened up the Cd-rom menu and selected Empty, even i had to restart the machine. This is the equivalent to have avaliable the cd-rom drive. If this was shown up, we are good so far.
      3. The official Letter for the cd-rom drive must be D: , but, the start up disk makes the cd-rom drive letter is E:, is temporal until all is installed. Please take a look at this.
      Try D:
      or
      Try E:
      or
      Try F:
      So far if you didn't touched nothing more (meaning the Bios setup), you are good to go.
      The second part if you can enter the cd-rom drive, let's say E: (like shown in the video), just do a Dir command like this:
      E:\> DIR [hit enter]
      It must shown all the files and directories avaliable in the cd-rom drive. (meaning windows 98)
      My question: It is shown something?
      Please let me know if you solved this. Just in case i checked out everything and this was the correct steps like shown in the video.
      Cheers !!!

      I posted this question in the vogons forum here: www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=60848 I could fix it by editing the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files as you can read on the bottom of the forum topic. It seems like that some applications are running slow or with delayed keyboard and mouse response. My host system is a Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00 GHZ with 16 GB RAM. Would you recommend other settings for me as in your example video?

      Well, if you are particular for a video graphics you can choose between normal graphics and or vodoo graphics. Some people like vodoo which is great. The rest is a matter of preference, example change another sound card if you like awe32. Or increase size of the hard drive. Good luck friend and thank you for your kind words.

    I tried to install one of my old games but it won't work it sees the cd rom and goes through an installation process but as soon as it finishes it deletes all the files it just finished installing. Also when I tried a different game it said that the cd must be in the drive and wouldn't play that either. Seems the old safe disk copy protection doesn't like pcem. First game was The Operational Art of War Elite Edition 2nd was Wooden ships and Iron Men. My pc is an i7 but it seems too slow to run the top level processors that can be selected. Lag is too much when trying to play a video file.
    What are some old good games that actually require this emulation that people have gotten to run?

      Sorry for the late answer and Glad to hear it. For all the games i've tested (like 15 more or less) all are working so far, always having in mind not all 100% will work with pcem, but so far i'm happy with it. Some i've tested: Mortal Kombat (1,2,3). Test Drive. IndyCar Racing. Diablo 1. Alien Trilogy. Heretic. Stargunner. Yoda Stories. Z. Cyberia Project Description. Cyberia 2.
      When i see a game or application that runs kind of slow, i select FAST VLB/PCI, but never experienced any problem about lag or playing any video file. I hope this can help you.

      Please recheck all the steps, from the beginning.
      1. Make sure in Pcem you have selected C: and the size of your choice.
      2. Make sure the Cd-Rom drive is selected (D: or E: letter)
      3. Make sure also, you execute FDISK, because the drive C: at this point is not prepared to be used, the system only know there is a hard drive but doesnt' kow what kind of drive it is.
      4. Format the new hdd.
      5. At this point you can enter C: and see your new hdd created.
      At this point if all is correct please consider:
      1. You mention E: , if you see at the beginning of the video, when i configure i select CD-ROM drive D:
      2. Because i'm using a windows 98 start up disk, this make a temporary change and make the cd-rom drive as E:.
      3. In another words, instead writing E: , write D: then enter to see if this the problem.
      4. Make a DIR command, you must see all the files in the cd image.

    I bought an IBM which came with a Windows 98SE disc (an upgrade from my Gateway intel 33Mhz which actually was something of an upgrade from my Cirix 66Mhz if you can figure that one out). My IBM CPU was 566Mhz with 512MB RAM and probably something like a 500MB HDD. Unfortunately this emulator doesn't seem to go past emulating around the 200Mhz era so perhaps 98se is a little too modern for the scope. Then again, if your not seeing any problems then maybe it's fine but I had some serious lag. No worries though, the other two vids you provided have me running with 3.11 and 95 perfectly, thank you.

    • @zombiesbyte331
      @zombiesbyte331 6 лет назад

      I've been corrected on the minimum specs needed for 98SE. I don't know why I remember it this way but the only thing I can think of is that the shop I bought my IBM from just downgraded an XP machine to make the price better. I know it was the last one in the shop before they stopped selling desktops all together.
      It may also be that I'm running this on an actual XP Pro (SP3) machine (Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz with 2GB Ram). That might be the bottle neck perhaps.

      I see. In my opinion your cpu in more than enough to run windows 98. I remember i had an IBM 486dx2 50mhz with 4mb ram and i had installed Windows 95. Of course, a little slow but it ran fine with Microsoft Plus and several games. If my machine back in the day could run both (3.11 and 95), your specs definetively run 98. But as you mention, it seems Pcem doesnt emualate beyond 200Mhz. Just in case in the configuration you can select MMX 233, maybe this improve the emualtion a bit. Another point, in my side, i run 98 without problems (i5 4690k 3.5 Ghz). And last but not least, remember swithing between Direct3D, OpenGl, Openg Gl 3.0 and Software, the first time i ran this emulator i felt a little lag, but for some reason switching between theses renders solved the problem, even i select again between all of them again. Thanks for your opinion.

      I'll try this thank you, just shutdown the PC so I'll take a look next time. Thanks again for everything Mav-G, I've had my eyes out for properly emulating all this old kit for years and DOSBox and VMWare are great at handling some things, I agree with you that PCem seems to provide the best experience all round.

      Still is a valid advice :-).
      In case you want to use a folder/directory/files, i use PowerIso (of course you can use any program, the idea is convert to an ISO file). Once converted i select Load Image via CD-ROM Menu , once selected i can open inside Windows 98 and treat it like any other cd rom /folder/files.
      If i have a Cd-rom, i directly host it in the same CD-ROM menu.
