Join me as I go mudlarking along the River Thames finding pieces of history washed out by the tide, and then join me back at the studio where I explore the history behind some of the objects.

It's a significant weekend for my family this weekend. World Mental Health Day is on Saturday October 10th 2020 and it would have been my brother Matthew's 50th birthday on Sunday October 11th. On this video I spend some time thinking about my brother Matthew and talking about his struggle with depression which lead him to take his own life in 1997 at the young age of 26.

Oh Nicola, I’m so sorry for your loss. My sister took her life in 2011, and both my grandfather and uncle before her. I too have had major clinical depression since I was 10. I believe many people suffer quietly when getting help is so important. So thank you for encouraging us to reach out and talk, or ask for help. I’ve had help that has changed my life. I hope someone who watches this finds the courage to seek help and further add to the gifts you and your brother have given the world. Bless you both❤️

Nicola, any family loss is a pain that never leaves. My only child died in July 2016 and I miss him every day as I'm sure you do of your brother. We have memories that will never leave us and its good to remember the happy times not just the sad.
I just want to say I really appreciate the wonderful nature filmography that you provide as a backdrop to your outings. It really sets the atmosphere and makes the viewer feel as natural a connection as one can in a video. Oh if I could find a magic wand to get me there in person :). My anxiety is with me every day .. sometimes, when I feel strong, I can see the beautiful sides of the world ..but mostly it's dark ... I too suffer through severe depression, social anxiety and panic attacks. From the age of 4yrs(I started kindergarten very early) clear through to college, school was always a terribly stressful and anxious filled endeavor 😳😣.
Although I did VERY well in school, it was exhausting with the over stimulation of people.
Mental health issues run very far back in my family, too. Bipolar, social anxiety and even crippling schizophrenia.

What a beautiful tribute to Matthew. You made his personality vivid. I would have loved to know him, and I am sorry for your sorrow. We are not without hope of seeing our loved ones again. I know he would be hugely gratified at how you share your joy in mudlarking. Here is another verse you might enjoy "Behold, I give you treasures of darkness, riches stored in secret places." Isaiah 45:3. What is that, if not mudlarking and metal detecting?

Nicola, what a nice tribute to your brother. So glad you can tell people to talk about depression. It's a medical condition not a weakness. Most people won't tell because of the stigma that comes with it which makes them feel more alone. Maybe you telling his story will help someone dealing with depression. Glad you can hear his voice any time you want. When I saw the rainbow in one clip it ended in the Thames. Fitting since that is where your treasures come from. Love watching what you find. We all have a little treasure hunting inside of us.

I am so very sorry to hear of your brother, Nicola. We lost my husbands father the same way. It is incredibly painful. I admire you so much for bringing this to peoples attention and encouraging people to not be ashamed but to get help. It is true! It is no different than myself with diabetes, get help! Very sorry to hear about your brother. Tomorrow, 13th of October, will be 7 years since my daughter died. She was only 8 weeks old, born with a rare genetic condition. I resuscitated her 7 times during her short life, and that experience has left me with anxiety issues. So I have some understanding of what you are saying. My wife and I always say that if we see a rainbow or a butterfly, that is our daughter who has come to say hello. Both appeared in your film. My daughter always finds ways to contact me, and today she used your film. Thank you.

Wow! First of all, thank you for your message about mental health! So many people are still afraid of the subject and don't talk about it. It' sounds like your brother was a cool guy, someone that I would have liked to hang out with. I have to say, this came at a strange time for me. I watched this on Monday the 12th, which happens to be the 25th anniversary of my husbands death from Leukemia. The struggles during his illness, and the aftermath of his death left it's marks on myself and my kids. I've dealt with depression, anxiety and PTSD. But as your message in plastic said, there is still wonderful things in this world. You just have to carry on and look for them. Today is also Thanksgiving here in Canada. Kind of appropriate! By the way, Rene, my late husband, was also a musician. He was a guitar player, his last band was a blues band by the name of Sounder. They recorded a few albums. And both of my son and daughter are currently in bands. Life goes on. I shed a few tears watching this, but that's ok. It's ok to shed tears when you need to. Again, thank you Nicola! Take care! Wow where to start x ty for that lovely vid I've lived with (not suffered from) depression for forty years and I do believe I'm still here because for the last 15 years I have not hidden it, talking is key I manage it now and I'm in control but back when your brother was fighting his demons there was a big stigma associated with it and through ignorance you were expected to shake it off and get on with life. But through education and talking about mental health its certainly makes us not feel like lepers. So thanks to wonderful people like you who although it's painful choose to bring it to the front really do make a big difference ♥️x

I lost my little brother a year ago from natural causes October 8th, i couldn't stop smiling even though i have tears in my eyes from watching you talk with such love about your little brother Matthew, it brought back some lovely memories for me and helped me heal a bit from what has been a rough week so i thank you for that.
I've also battled depression on and off since i was a teenager, please anyone who's reading this, if you are hurting please get help, i'm proof that it does help.

My 17 y/o daughter was just diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, something that unfortunately runs in my family. She lives with her mother, and I've had little to no communication with her for nearly 2 years. I love her and miss her more than I could ever explain, and everyday that goes by without her breaks me just a little more.
Nicola, thank you for publicly recognizing mental illness, and disruptive and dangerous it can be. As someone who lives with mental health issues, and is impacted by family members with mental health issues, we need to work together to end the stigma associated with mental illness, and get people help they need.

Dear Nicola--thank you for telling us about your brother. I always feel that just as we still love the ones we miss so much, they are also still loving us. They are just somewhere else right now, but we will be with them again. I am one of the lucky ones who did get help--my depression is manageable thanks to my observant g.p. and the medication he prescribed. Your words are very wise and helpful. I am keeping you and Matthew in my heart. With love.

Sending lots of love, Nicola... What a great way to remember your brother. I've no need to tell you how Mental Health issues, and the far reaching effects from them, can be totally devastating. Many people suffer undiagnosed problems and struggle on daily because the pace of modern life demands it. Those who receive medical help and support [like me] are actually very lucky. Good mental health is not something to be taken for granted - psychological illness can afftect anyone at any time, loved ones as well as sufferers...
Personally speaking - some days, just getting out of bed feels like climbing Everest, never mind ticking the various boxes govt and society require. SO, I want to say a huge heartfelt THANK YOU, NICOLA... because your videos are a great help to me personally - the soothing lap of water [think I told you I'm more at home on the Thames east of Greenwich than anywhere else in the World], your warm personality, gentle but infectious enthusiasm and sense of wonder. Even without the pandemic, a lot of the life I used to enjoy is now vicarious - and virtual - via social media and RUclips. Sunday evenings are my favourite, knowing that YOU, and others - such as John Rogers, post wonderful, relaxing adventure videos each week. It feels like spending time with and among friends and that shared experience, that brief togetherness, is really quite special. One day, I'd love to get back down to London - retrace my favourite Woolwich / Greenwich walk, and if I bump into you... I'll be sure to say 'thank you' in person. X

I struggle with depression now, especially since 2017, when Menieres Disease and hearing losses changed my world, balance, hearing and life overnight. Now I fight my corner again, when I have the energy, and am learning to listen to my body, and take a day at a time.
I have three brothers, and a sister, so I feel for you loosing Matthew. Xx
Thinking of all those struggling, always ask for help...I have learnt at 52, it is good to reach out, and not struggle on, battle on through, and it is OK to say no to things, to save burning yourself out. You can only spread yourself so thin.

That was a beautiful tribute and message. 💝 I too lost my brother to suicide when I was in high school. It is heartening to live in a time that acknowledges mental illness and treatment and that the negative shameful stigma is lifting. In my families case, it was never talked about. Sorry for the loss of your brother Nic. I am a counselor and a person with anxiety and depression . Have found medication and doing things I love to cope extremely helpful as you can see from my fishing thumbnail. It is good that we all talk about these things to reduce stigma and know that there is help out there. Two of my favorite historical heroes are thought to have had depression Abraham Lincoln and your Sir Winston Churchill. God bless Matthew and your family!

This had me in tears I must admit. I've only just discovered your channel in recent weeks and am really enjoying it. We're about the same age and I feel a real affinity with you and the things you love and your compassion. My family were from Greenwich so I know the area quite well and I sometimes wonder if any of the relics belonged to my distant relatives! Unlikely I know but it does make me feel nostalgic. The end of this video brought a tear to my eye Nicola but I also enjoyed your finds as well. I lost my older brother in a road accident in 1996 when he was 25 so they were both the same age. I could see you were emotional. It still hurts all these years later. I'm sure he'd be very proud of you today ♥️

Nicola I cannot begin to imagine the hurt of losing your brother the way you did. Happy Birthday Matthew! I think of your sweet mum today as this must be hard for to have lost a son. I cannot imagine losing my 37 & 33 year old kids. Matthew’s song was so very touching. So ironic that you spoke of depression/mental health in the same video where you also mentioned Philippians 4:13. It was my precious father’s favorite verse of scripture that saw him through many surgeries after a broken back. I have been struggling with some degree of depression because Covid has made it impossible for me to take a plane to visit my daughter, son, and their families so I keep quoting that verse and relying on FaceTime to get me picked up when I’m down.
You and your videos are a true blessing to me!! I like to think of you as a friend I haven’t yet met!!

I'm so sorry, Nicola , for the loss of your very talented brother . Loved his song ; what a beautiful tribute to him . Depression is merciless, once it has gotten its clammy talons into you . In some ways it's an even worse "pandemic" than the present one. A heartfelt thank you, for caring and standing up for all of us depression sufferers around the world. Congrats to some really cool coin finds there, btw . One of these days, you might even find a rare 300- year old coin from my own country, Sweden . I'm holding my thumbs that you do .

I'm sorry about your brother. I am being medicated for depression and ptsd since losing my 9 year old daughter 3 years ago.
There have been times I could of just given up. I've been in the dark hole many times
