Once tried to pull a Mk3 golf GTI with a big trailer and a Vauxhall Astra, long story short, 1.5 miles from home got a sway on spun the whole lot on an A road, nothing tipped over, Astra alloys scrapped the tarmac Golf alloys were marked by the trailer, we drove straight home, someone was seriously watching over us that day.
If you’re thinking of adding any auxiliary light I’d be keen to see how you wire it to switches inside the cab/ how you mount them. Might make a good video. Cheers
Having experience towing heavy, I use and trust more in the pin hitch style then the ball hitch. The issue is that you need to replace the trailer connection to a ring type.
Poly block couplers are an even better option than the pin/ring sort if your going to be replacing the trailer connection anyway, they don't have anything like the wiggle room to "hammer" and dampen a surprising amount of high frequency vibration the would otherwise be conveyed into cabin. On the vehicle side the good news is if you've got a 50x50mm rectangular receiver with a horizontal pin, you can get a load rated adapter to suit any trailer at most auto-stores.
3:52 just from experience towing large boats with multi axle trailers you want to make sure the rear axle of trailer is loaded slightly more than the front for stability. Obviously tow hitch hight effects this alot if you can’t adjust anything else on the trailer.
@@DarksideDevelopments yeah it’s complicated is my point, if you lower the hitch hight on the wrong trailer you can reduce nose weight and take load from the rear axle to the front and get a wobble for a different reason. Obviously the weight should be to the front of the trailer but the rear axle should take about the same or slightly more of the load. I believe anyway.
Yeah that’s not right mate. You want it equal you don’t want the tow hitch to have much weight either pushing down or pulling up as one will lift traction from the front tires while the other will lift traction from the back.
Seems they are rated for 3500kg in australia but problem then is same as all pick ups ranger dmax etc is as soon as 3500kgs is on the towbar you only have enuf left in total train weight for a driver and his pack up box I have a v6 rock tows my 3 tonne boat way better than my td5 130 defender but the defender is 3500kg towing and 7000kg train weight
really enjoyed this Ryan and I don't have a vag and drive jdm stuff/old beamers and don't have a trailer lol?! I could easily listen to a video podcast of you talking about anything. perhaps the origins of darkside would be a cool new video (I'd like a shout out of you end up doing this mind haha!)
I think you would probably be better getting a 3.5t van with a 7t gross combination like a sprinter, you can still get it as a crew chassis cab and fit a 5th wheel
The handbrake is crap being the main thing for 7T GTW but yeah, makes little sense why they didn't. Touareg is fine with a big trailer, you always see Mk1 and Mk2 Touaregs towing big trailers!

I understand that mr hitches does a 3650 kg tow bar for a amarok. They are available from 4x4 outback equipment Australia

Only really plant trailers have those

Really interesting video as always

i don't care what you charge for this .. it's worth it just for someone else to deal with DVLA / VOSA & all the paperwork involved
Brilliant video well explained

We need storage in the back and usability after ditching the trailer. Not many 7T GVW vans at all.
