We should know that this was very early in Jesus ministry and he hasn't really called the 12 yet to ministry. Before this in chapter 4, Simon Peter invited Jesus for lunch in his house after Jesus sabbath teaching in the synagogue. At Simon Peters house, Jesus healed Simon Peter's mother in law from a very high fever. Now in this story in chapter 5, Simon Peter with his brother Andrew along with their fishing buddies James and John in another boat have just arrive from an all night fishing task and have not caught anything. Filled with disappointment they were just eager to clean their nets, park their boats, go home to their families for bfast and rest & sleep. These are the very factors for Simon Peter's hesitancy or lack of enthusiasm to indulge Jesus in His request. Of course Simon Peter also know that fishing is more productively done at night and that if there was an expert on fishing it was him and not some carpenter. But by now Jesus was his friend and somehow owe Jesus a favor for healing his mother in law.
