One thing it might be nice to clarify, is you cannot just straight up upgrade your Gen 2 router with the new gen 3 router, because the Gen 3 router does not have the POE injector to power the dish.
So if you have the rectangle dish with a Gen 2 router, and you want to add the gen three router, you still have to use your Gen 2 router to power the dish and use the ethernet adapter to connect to the new router. Which at that point you might as well just use something not Starlink

weird! So how does that work? Is there a setting to disable the gen 2 router from a transmitting and push that to Gen 3? Again if so why not just get a seperate router for less $$$?
@@arcademan-ox3pv Yeah, you'd put the gen 2 router into bypass mode which disables wifi. All its doing then is powering Dishy and the ethernet adapter which in turn is supplying the gen 3 router with traffic via ethernet.
The gen 2 router is of course also allowing you to control dishy via the app.
I have a Gen 1 dish connected directly to my own router, no Starlink router used. Works fantastic. Yes I lose the Starlink app interface but once the dish is setup, not much of a loss
How do you do that? I have a UDM pro after the Gen 1 starlink router and want to delete it.
Unplug your Starlink router from the cat 5 connection on the power brick and plug your other router into the power brick. That’s it. You will lose the app connectivity with the dish but it’s been working great since beta for me.
Same, GEN 1, I use an eero mesh network Pro 6, with 7 wireless units spread across a property. No issues... a few more satellites would help connectivity., It covers more than 2 acres.
Thanks as always. Have both initial form factor and square dishes and the gen1 and gen2 routers respectively. Gen2 router really disappointed me. No out of the box capacity to use own stack pained me. It’s taken decades but almost all ISP’s allow this now wherever you are in the world. Gen2 Starlink router was a huge step back (probably for data collation reasons to offset certain and wider infrastructure costs). I run an I.T. MSP and IP telephony company in the U.K. and this new release leaves me warm and fuzzy inside.
This is a nice change. I just installed a gen 2 for a customer two weeks back. Didn't realize you needed to buy the ethernet accessory 😤

So stupid! A client of mine uses Starlink solely as a failover connection. Was annoyed when I found out we need to buy an accessory for it.
And because it is directly, and electrically in-line with the dish, it’s far more susceptible to copping surge/lightning damage.

Wifi6 does not have a larger frequency band then wifi5. People need to stop saying it does. Wifi6E does, which incorporates the 6Ghz frequencies bands.
Range and speed are closely linked so it’s difficult to separate them. WiFi 5 at 75 ft through 3 walls/floors has about the same speed as WiFi 6 at 100+ ft. Or, put client at same range and WiFi 6 speed is at least 30% faster.

@@johnpoldo8817 my comment specifically addresses the frequency bands, not the speed of the link and/or physical range from the access point. I have corrected the specificity of my original comment.
@@youdontneedmyrealnamepretty sure it does increase the permitted size of the 5GHz channels to wider frequency bands per channel.
Wifi 6 does not give you more spectrum, Wifi 6E does.
I just ordered a new Starlink dish kit this week. It's coming with the Gen 2 router and I ordered the external Ethernet adapter since I will be using my existing UniFi infrastructure.
I just revived my Starlink package today in Germany and I still received the Gen 2 router.
Seems to me that in your closing summary you missed discussing the most compelling use case to do this upgrade to the Gen 3 - being if you have the Gen 1 with the round Dishy. The Gen 1 router does have an Ethernet port (in the brick) but has a shockingly small WiFi range, no mesh capability, etc. So the Gen 3 would be a very significant upgrade for those of us with the original kit.
Nice if you get it as a new package. But a Unifi Dream Router costs the same and has more options, and Unifi APs are cheaper than a 2nd or 3rd box from Starlink. I never used my Gen1 router and built out a Unifi network, and now I have brand new fiber, so my dish is unpowered on the roof now as the extra cost of the long fiber run from the road will pay for itself with a lower cost 1Gbps service. Starlink worked great, but I'm not going to be "that guy" who has it just because and preventing someone who is waiting from getting online.
I feel like you may have missed the best change! See 2:40 - is that a standard ethernet port for the dish? I think so... So, no SPX plugs anymore? FINALLY! 😁
If starlink had a cheaper plan to be used as a backup link I would get one for sure.
in NZ last week they announced a half price plan - now $75/month as opposed to $150 but the speed is reduced.
Weird how they didn’t just jump to WiFi 6E. Even the new iPhones support that standard.
Maybe because not every country starlink serves has 6GHz availability, but I can only guess

Wifi 6E speeds/frequency ranges are much higher then what Starlink is really meant for. I can see them adding it in their higher models for like maritime and business class installments but not for the standard version. Until dishy can supply 500Mbps or higher speeds consistently there's really no point.
The original version supports only Wi-Fi 6, not 6e, according to its original specifications.
@@Zgamer328Correct, it depends on the FCC counterpart on that country. 6 GHz is still a licensed frequency in some counties.
Looks like theres a post about the gen 3 router on the "Starlink Hardware" site, and it turns out it can't replace a gen 2 router, so you still need to connect it to the gen 2 using an ethernet adapter. Definitely worth a read.
Great video. I always appreciate in-depth looks at hardware refreshes like this. Manufacturers don't do nearly a good enough job with hardware refresh changelogs. I'm sure their ad men have something to say about that. :P

When you plug the router into your power source in the USA is the power cord 110v plug or a transformer to lower the power to hopefully 12v. I cannot find that information anywhere.
I just installed a Gen 3 in an extremely remote and secret location… lol, it’s fantastic. Unbelievable speed and resolution. Highly recommended.

The pictures seem to show an ethernet connection for the dish, which would make it compatible with the round dish, not the rectangular dish. Are they going to have multiple versions? Adapters? How will someone with a rectangular dish Gen 2 upgrade to this Gen 3?
what is the upgrade path for Gen2. Do I need to keep the gen2 router to power the dish and buy the dongle to connect the 3rd gen router. What a cobbled up mess that would be.
I'm in a very rural area and live at the bottom of a hill. Internet is the only thing that allows me to use my phone. I just bought a Reyee RG-R6 mesh router but I can not get it linked to the gen 3 router.

Most users only care about "does it increase my internet speed?"
Usually the speed limiter is starling / other ISP.

I just bought a Starlink. It arrived two days ago (Jan 9, 2024). It is still a Gen 2 dish and Gen 2 router.
I did the same thing. thinking of returning it to Home Depot now that they have the Gen 3 and I haven't setup my Gen 2 yet. not sure though

I've got a Unifi network fed by Starlink v2 with the $20 ethernet dongle. I see no reason to "upgrade". I'm still using Wifi 5 access points and have more than enough bandwidth for home use. On a really good day Starlink gives us 140Mbps and Wifi 5 has no problem keeping up with that. If I want high speed I run cat6.
Hey! Question for OP and crosstalk. I'm looking to do the exact same with my gen 2 to a udr. Have you had any issues? I've heard from some that it can cut out every 3 hours due to some CGNAT / DHCP lease issue (apparently it won't reconnect when the dish loses signal and then regains it). Starlink has been a game changer for me as I live in an area with really poor fibre/4G coverage but really want to use a different router so I can make use of VLANs and have improved privacy/security.
A Gen2 router works as a passthrough into a Ubiquiti mesh system. I'll park here for a while (set and forget). The elusive ethernet dongle was purchased from Ebay after months of waiting for Starlink to ship. It's been 1+ year in queue.
I just ordered the new Dish. I had Gen1 but sold it to a buddy who installed in on a sailboat. what I did not see in this video is the new kickstand style Dish overview/assessment. Is there anything significant about the new dish that is beneficial? better penetration though partial sky obstruction or improved tracking? this dish does not look like it has a motor so curious.
Looks like a rj45 connector for the connection from the dish. I’m assuming you need a new cable (or hack the old one) to use with V2 dish. Does the router use the x-swapped wiring like the v2 cable?
Looks like you will still need V2 router and an Ethernet adapter to use the V2 square dish with the V3 router. Plug the dish into Ethernet adapter and plug the Ethernet adapter into V2 router set to bridge. Then plug the V3 router into the Ethernet port on the adapter.
Very disappointing that the V3 router doesn’t have a power supply to power the V2 dish, and doesn’t even have the proprietary connection to connect the V2 dish.
So no POE on gen3? As I’ve already dispensed with the Gen 2 router so I’d probably not bother with the gen 3 but wonder how / if they are going to offer new v2 dishes with gen 3 routers?
If it comes with a plug in transformers.. its a game changer for off grid living and RV.
This gets it away from removing the modem router and adding multiple adapters to power the dish.
However I can't find out what the input to the router is, say if its 24v dc it will still need a 12v dc to 24v dc adapter. Hopefully its 12v dc to simplify everything!!
Would have been nice to discuss about how the antenna connects? Shows another RJ45 on the picture but no other details? As this would be another massive shift to using "normal" connections.
You spoke nothing of gen 1 users? I setup a gen 1 system with UniFi dream pro and 6 access points for my fire department. The starlink drops out sometimes and I have century link as a back up. Problem is normally when starlink comes back on the dream machine doesn’t automatically switch back.
Also, is the light in the right hand corner supposed to stay on? Mine comes on via reboot and then it goes out. My internet is on and working but I did not know about that light

I just purchased 2 new starlink kits for my parents and brothers places last week. I bought the kits and the additional ethernet adaptor.
They are at the post office, I will be picking them up Monday, so can't confirm that they are gen 2, but thats what was showing. I ordered them on the 16th Oct.
I'm dissapointed, Gen 2 is just a pain with the ethernet adaptor bs, I've had to set that up before into a unifi rack, stupid that u need to have the router and the stupid ethernet adaptor al jammed into a shelf in a rack, its a mess.
Try to return it and order the newer one if time permits.
Unfortunatly I can't delay install, plus there isn't any option for a gen 3 router in the shop yet in Australia. I havent got any email about it yet either. @@johnpoldo8817

gen3 is still not available on their website, they are still offering gen 2, atleast here in the Philippines
were planning to order starlink.. we live way out in the middle of nowhere., it says we have access when i check the availability. (northwest kansas.. close to nebraska). i checked on the order which model it says would be sent if we order it. it says gen5. so. right as of this very moment.. its not shipping with 6 yet. soooo.. i think i will wait till i see that change before we order. =D
Unfortunately, Gen 3 is currently only available with Business or Roaming accounts. Personal is still Gen 2 with Wi-Fi 5.
I would love to know if port forwarding is possible with the Gen 3 Router.

Looks like this has been out for over 6 months. Why did I just get the email? Maybe because I got my Starlink less than 1 year ago after waiting over 2 years to get it at a higher price than I originally signed up for! Thank you Elon and Starlink for treating me so fairly.
I believe you said you could hardwire them as access points. Did I hear your correctly? I. If so, way better that them connecting between mesh points wirelessly. Is that done through ethernet backhaul?
can you use the Gen 2 as a mesh point after replacing it with the gen 3?
I just got the gen 3 router today as well as the "standard" dish so yes the dishes are now coming with the new router. This was an early access invitation though. I had an old gen1 round dish and gen1 router which I will retire. In that configuration I just went straight from the power brick to my UDM Pro and didn't even user their router. I have all the Unifi access points I need so I will probably not use their wifi. Running from the ethernet port to the WAN of UDM Pro seems to work fine. I suppose I could somehow use the Starlink Wifi but I am not enough of a network guy to know how. If you have suggestions as to how I could incorporate it to my Unifi network I would appreciate it because it is WiFi 6

I see it says triband, it’s 2.4GHz and 2x 5GHz radios. Should I assume it will use one of the 5GHz radios for the mesh backhaul like Netgear does with Orbi?
if im Orbi 6 Pro mesh system.....would it make any sense to switch to this or keep what i have. I feel like what im using is going to be better but not 100%. I have the 1st generation dish and using my own equipment, ive honestly never used starlinks routers.

I have the rectangular dish with the generation 2 router. With other internet systems I would put the supplied router in bridge mode and then use my own Netgear router. However, with Starlink that did not work well. I put the Starlink router in bypass mode, and got some odd results. Although my Negear router did get an external IP address, even with my computer connected directly to the Netgear wifi, when I Googled 'whatismyip' I would get the original Starlink router IP not the one my Netgear router displayed. Also all my port forwarded cameras were not accessible from an external connection(or even internal connection if using the Starlink router) . Now I understand that I cannot do port forwarding on the Starlink router but why does it not work when the Starlink router is bypassed? I finally gave up and put the Starlink router in normal mode. This would be a deal breaker for me if I could get decent internet speed any other way.

What we need is how fast it is and what's the latency ping and why only -30*C In Canada we get often to -40*C or even lower close to -50*C Why risking switching to starlink if it will freeze.
Hey you can enable an option on your Starlink account to have your dish constantly heat itself for snowmelt and such. I think its like 50w-75w power draw. It comes pre-configured to auto-heating when it needs it but like I said you can turn it on constant. Melts 1.5" of snow per hour. I have a friend in Alaska with near identical temps that has Starlink and I've heard no issues mentioned from him.
Only thing keeping me from going to Starlink is there is no Static IP option that I know of.
Does the Gen3 router support port forwarding? Would be great as it would allow us to view the DVR for the cameras while away.
Use dynamic DNS with a Netgear router. Problem solved.

Need to be a little careful here though. Do we know that one of the ethernet ports can be used as a real WAN port? Or does connecting a third party router create a double NAT?
3rd party router with Starlink ALWAYS creates double NAT - that's just the nature of the beast.
Depends on how you configure your 3rd party router.
Would there be a way for you to do a video on if it is possible to use starlink with unifi talk? I just purchased a unifi talk phone and have all unifi equipment but there is no way to receive incoming calls to unifi talk. Outbound works fine. Love all your videos!

you actually don't need the Starlink router at all, I have a Gen2 and just use a Starlink to Ethernet converter plug and plug the dish straight into my own WAN port and it works fine.
Seriously? That's pretty cool, I'm suprised and especially assuming the self-adjust satelite function works.
I guess no download/upload bandwidth increase..

after having the original dish since the BETA days I cancelled the service all together. It stopped making sense to have.
I really don't like the SL network equipment. And it's very frustrating that your ip is natted for the price you pay. I have a bit of a love-hate thing for SL.. but it's one of the very few options here.
2 months in and my gen 3 router bricked.
as long as it takes to get a dish if you order today till you get it the GEN 5 will be out.
$99 a month is waaaay too expensive for me to begin with...and I live in the sticks; not even next to a town; I can get LOS shot internet bounced to where I am for $40 a month; sure it's only about 1MB/s average with peak of 3MB/s during off hours, but that is very manageable when you don't want to drop a full tank of gas on top of having internet.
I have gen2 with the ethernet adapter connected to Unifi. I cannot see the benefits I would receive since I only use it as a passthrough. I guess I get to keep my $200. Thanks but no thanks Elon.

No I will not upgrade. This is why I went with a 3rd party mesh. I have VPN, Dynamic DNS and can keep running Starlink till the dish dies.

Why not just buy a wifi 6 router from a 3rd party for less than half the price?
Why would you need this wifi 6 as this is 5G and you will not need it in a RV or on a BOAT

Why would anyone want to pay multiple hundreds of dollars for internet and equipment, the only way this seems useful is to someone who has no other options for internet instead as it's the most expensive internet I've ever seen
You underestimate how many people live in rural areas where SL is their only option for fast Internet.
Actually I underestimate you're ability too bother looking into other satellite internet services, which everyone I've ever looked up is cheaper then Starlink.....and being Satellite you should be able to pick and choose which provider you want to use, so why would you choose the most expensive one that also makes you install the equipment yourself on top of it? Xplore, Ground Control, Galaxy, etc are all cheaper. Do you have a smart phone with internet whereever you are? Then you have the ability to have fast internet for you're computer too, it's just obviously one of the providers of internet to youre area isnt bothering to provide it or the infrastructure as it's not profitable for them....yet theyll try to block anyone else from providing it to you either, cable and internet companies are some of the worst crooks in business out there as European countries have faster internet service then us in Canada and USA and pay less then we do for it @@johnbankston72
There are a lot of people that only have this option. I live in a rv for 5 months of the year . Starlink is excellent for me .

Get a data plan for you're phone then use it as a hotspot and connect youre PC or whatever to it's wifi plan....it'll cost maybe 40 bucks a month times 5 months thats only $200 dollars you'd pay for 5 months internet instead of hundreds more and installation and equipment. I do this when we go camping, just like you going RVing....streams HD TV great, surfs fast, probably faster then this satellite even
