Atmosphere performs "Became" live in the studios of 89.3 The Current. Listen to all three song-set and the interview at thecurrent.org/ minnesota.publi...
I have no clue why, but everytime i want to listen to Became, i always come to hear this live version. Just something about the way Slug makes it sound live is fantastic. Same with The Woman With The Tattooed Hands.
It's amazing how much emotion he puts into this song. You can feel it in his voice and his facial expressions and it gives me chills every time i hear it.
So much to say about this... My interpretation. Let's start where he ends, with the lyrics "you're not the hunted, you're not the game, you're just another dog with hunger pains I was so afraid that you become the game I forgot to worry about what you became." How I see it is being comfortable in a relationship, and he's really into this girl man. This girl is his, and he's confident about that. He got a lazy, he "fell asleep". The wolves following her are his competition, and by the time he realizes this (wakes up) it's too late. She's running, but not from the wolves from him. She is the one searching for someone else, and the fact that she's being hunted is just the name of the game. He got so comfortable that he forgot about the possibility that sometimes it doesn't have to be someone who steals your beloved, they just choose to run and find something better, and along the way she or he may just grab the attention of a wolf. And its cold when you're alone. After reading this, hear the song again or read the lyrics. Let me know what you think.
yea. think about this too. He worried that the person was taken by wolves. They wondered into something ugly. I see nothing but leafless frozen trees. He had a heart to protect but the person willingly left. He is left wandering if the whole time he thought the person was a victim, they were actually a wolf. same stuff u said kinda, right?
+Mike Lorla yea...that's the general gist of it. It's hard to explain here as I don't claim to be a literary virtuoso. It's also occurred to me that he's cold at the intro, and as they say "it's cold when you're alone"
To me its about vicariously living a dangerous lifestyle through a friend where they're surrounded with "Wolves". The person rapping would be constantly worried for his friend, thinking they're prey for the predator. At the end he realizes his "Friend" turned into a "Wolf" somewhere along the way. Basically it's about the corruption of a loved one or that's how I interpret it.
Now THIS is how rap can cross genres..this is pure poetry with a slick beat and a piano and guitar pushing it.. This is how you cross over..how any music lover could not appreciate this version I just can't comprehend!!!
This song actually seems to be based around the idea of a person going down the wrong path due to a drug addiction. Addiction is a difficult rut to get out of once one has become so entrapped, but this song captures every tiny emotion that goes along with the feeling of being controlled. Well done, mate.
Kyle same. I always thought it was about a dog who was eaten by wolves, until I actually heard it carefully. I almost cried the first time, since I misheard it
after i looked reprobate up because i wasnt sure of the definition.....#1 there is no god...if there was, babies and children would not have and die from cancer.....#2 christianity is a joke...if god is almighty, why does "he" ask for money at planetarily everey service....cant he handle his man made finances???????????...and im sorry sir/ma'am...i was brought up with morals....very strict ones...but as i approach a half century on this earth....I KEEP IT REAL!!!!!!!!!!!
When I first heard this, I really, really wanted it to literally be about a camping trip lol I had a feeling that it was more complex than that. The entire album is great.
Why does Atmosphere sound so good live. Nowadays finding live artists who sound good especially in rap is hard but I'm glad Slug and Aes Rock exist to be there for at least a few to be around
Clicked on this, saw the soul patch, had low hopes for the music...but...this was actually really captivating! Is this a kind of rap? I'm still sort of shocked that I liked this!
The artist performing is Slug, or Sean Daley his DJ and he go by Atmosphere. They've carved their own niche in the underground/independent rap world and it's no accident that they don't sound like everyone else. Slug as a storyteller is untouchable from my perspective, you would really enjoy other tracks by this artist as well if this hit home with you. Check out "Guarantees", "Me", and everyone's favorite "Yesterday" for more like this.
+AaronHDodge he didn't invent the sub-genre, but he did set a standard for it also theres like a million names for this kind of rap: alternative rap, abstract rap, art rap etc etc
+Daniel C 9 months later but I just read your comment and my first thought was "Dude, let me show you Atmosphere!" I love opening people up to my music, or trying to at least. I dont feel like I have many opportunities. Put it this way though, this shit needs a new name for a genre because when I say I like rap, I ALWAYS feel the need to explain the kind of rap i listen to, vs what most people think of when they hear the word "rap"
I guess if I was Slug though, I wouldn't care for it much either, but that's exactly what makes him so special is that he knows he can move people with his pain and though it hurts him dearly...he continues to, and it's because he knows that it's the only way for it to manifest into something positive and leave the antithesis realm.
This song is what you make it about that is what good art is. Fame, drug addict, work addict, losing friends to bullshit. You decide what means most to you.
It's one of those songs that can be related to multiple things IMO. I personally look at it as a methaphor for a girl he met that talks about being the hunted/prey (taken advantage of, used, whatever) and he learns she's actually one of them and took advantage of him "you're not the hunted, you're not the aim, you're just another dog with hunger pains". Personal expirence i can relate it to anyway.
Jesus what a verse....Slug really puts a lot of heart into his music..all of it actually, which is why sometimes I don't understand why he'll say he didn't like a song or an album he did. Why not? Maybe you don't like the subconscious feeling it brings back, maybe it taps at some memory, but how can you say you don't like it!?
That's cool man, i could see that, i honestly like this song just because anybody can relate to it regardless of whats going on in their life. Its cool to see how other people interpret the song.
the album focused on family and eyedea... i'm sure he's still got some fire stored away. And if not, I eternally respect that man like an older brother and a therapist. He showed me a different way to look at music and life.
Some of them I came up with myself, others I read elsewhere. The snow / cocaine bit wasn't my own. Such a deep song, the metaphors are used so well. Slug is really a lyrical genius.
Man Atmosphere should sell some music note books of all the beats the guitarist plays on his guitar, that guitar dude has great beats i"m down to play atmosphere's notes
I came back to read answers to my questions from other users and now i fucking love this song its awesome. I liked it before but the second time has cemented it into my brain. Thanks for helping me understand it You Tubers
The first part of the track is about someone waking up camping to find a friend wandered of knowing what they're doing and following that person only to discover the same trail has been followed by wolves. Then he refers the the wolves being fans, fame and beibg famous...in my opinion its about slug and his view on being chased by fame. The person he was running for was himself
Coming back home To You, never knew what album it was from or anything, didnt even know it was a group, thought it was cool Slugs name was Sean, cause mine is =), I rap myself, so Atmosphere is a great inspritaion, not just rap wise but even just musically. The instrumentals on this album alone are astonishing, Slug just completes that equation with the writtens.
One of the sad clown bad springs, first cd I ever went out and bought in support was seven's travels. I've only been listening to him for a few years but seriously one of the only artists that I actually bought discs from haha
he said "It's not that tragic it's not a shame You're not the hunted you're not the aim You're just another dog with hunger pains I was so afraid that you'd become the game I forgot to worry about what you became" slug started seeing eyedea more as competition in the rap game instead of what he was becoming
I have no clue why, but everytime i want to listen to Became, i always come to hear this live version. Just something about the way Slug makes it sound live is fantastic. Same with The Woman With The Tattooed Hands.
Check out -the river live. He gets mad emotional in it. I think he's only performed it live once or twice.
Yeah, this one hits me every time I listen to it
I feel the same about "not another day" jus wonder what other songs would feel with an acoustic vibe
Slug is one of the few mc's left who sings with this much emotion with a crowd or no crowd... and that's why I love him
One of the best story tellers EVER.
dozens of listens, chills every time.
Every time
Whenever I hear this song, I live through it. It is too real.
This song is a masterpiece. Thank you Sean, for making music for the advanced listeners.
Mikey, I look forward to seeing you again in paradise.
I clicked on this randomly, and i must say I was positively surprised. This was great!
This is phenomenal song writing. Truly incredible.

+Zachary Maser I love this interpretation! I never looked at it that way!
that's a great interpretation
yea. think about this too. He worried that the person was taken by wolves. They wondered into something ugly. I see nothing but leafless frozen trees. One of the best (hiphop) songs ever written.
I was turned on to this by NPR's "All Things Considered," 10 March 2017.
Can I just point out how fucking adorable the faces he makes are.
Yess! I fully agree with this.
I could stare at him all damn day.
Ikr haha
+Kayla Duprey Can I point out how adorable you are?
" fun fact. "became" isn’t about a woman or a dog. it's about a homie on a negative path. fear for him. eventually, fear him. #thefamilysign "
This song actually seems to be based around the idea of a person going down the wrong path due to a drug addiction. So grateful for these venues / media outlets that give slug this chance to shine, so incredible to hear these tracks in this format.
He tweeted saying that this song is about watching a friend go down the wrong path.
yeah, eyedea
@@mccarthyc12 RIP🙏Mikey
Yeah.... I'm Going thru that exact thing. This song is too real
I always tied it to a relationship with a lover, and them taking off to a new one
Such a sad message, totally stellar performance
Heard this the first time the other day, it had me in suspense throughout the whole song. Never concentrated on a song so much.
Kyle same. I always thought it was about a dog who was eaten by wolves, until I actually heard it carefully. I almost cried the first time, since I misheard it
Such a powerful performance
Wow!! This live version is amazing!
he puts so much of his soul into it...slug, the best one out there.
wow, passionate, heartfelt, multilayered, dope!
Such powerful lyrics.... a true master of words is Slug.
Ohh Slug... One of the few rappers who seems to get into character to make a song even better.

You guys always have the best videos, thank you so much.
God played this song for me one night. I wonder what he’s trying to tell me
It's time to change
I hope you found your way out from going towards the wrong path.
When I first heard this, I really, really wanted it to literally be about a camping trip lol I had a feeling that it was more complex than that. The entire album is great.

Thank you so much RUclips for suggesting this video to me. You're awesome.

Daniel C haha I think Slug is the only person who can pull off a soul patch.
+AaronHDodge he didn't invent the sub-genre, but he did set a standard for it

+CLYDE FROG You should say "hip hop" instead of "rap." Slug is hip hop
I come here every year. For my brother Kyle.
i hate it when people say there is no real hip hop out anymore...youre just not looking in the right places...its here.
This is brilliant; all of Atmosphere shines. The Current did a lovely job too.
one of the best live performances ive heard by slug for sure
Awesome song loved it
Love Atmosphere
I feel Mikey caused a lot of pain. he is in every song.
Who's Mikey?
bitch Mike Larsen aka Eyedea. Super talented, tormented rapper
@@minifridge8315 that eyedea. Real name
@@maryannappiagyei4277 oh yes I’m finalllly a big fan of Eyedea now… the original comment sounds pretty resentful
This makes my heart beat in ways I didn’t know it could. ❤️🔥❤️🔥

once again atmosphere has proved they are better live.
Great song
RIP friend many of us saw those tracks. I wish we could’ve talked about it before it was too late
Two years Michael's been gone. We miss you, man. I hope there is a heaven, and a part for Eyedea.

Too much.. makes me cry every time
i love bands like the bronx, tool, ricaine, fugazi.. this dude has , and shows the passion of these bands l;ike no other in this genre

Towards the end of the song it really feels like he's talking to him. It sounds like disappointment, anger, and acceptance all in one verse.
Atmosphere will be classic later on.
2023 this is the best shit out
He sounds like he's holding back from crying through the whole song.
I cried for him
I'm pretty sure that this song was for his dead friend eyedea
I sure as hell didn't. Lol
how refreshing to listen to a rapper you can understand..?
thank you
Great story teller
I love this

The way Slug rips the cable at the end!
There might not be a song greater than this

This song is like a very suspensful movie but ten times better because slug is rapping it

he said "It's not that tragic it's not a shame
You're not the hunted you're not the aim
You're just another dog with hunger pains
I was so afraid that you'd become the game
I forgot to worry about what you became"
slug started seeing eyedea more as competition in the rap game instead of what he was becoming
I did simplify that quite a lot because of character limit, but listen to the song and it'll make sense hopefully :)
