  • Mr Aashutosh Barahi is a dedicated content creator who has undertaken projects aimed at highlighting and preserving the cultural wealth of Newa community. At the 53rd session of The Story Yellers, Mr Barahi recounted his journey from a human being with a sense of cultural disconnection to finding his life’s purpose in embracing his cultural identity.
During early childhood, his life was marked by a strong resistance towards Newa culture as his parents, against his will, forced him to participate in worship and rituals. While his friends played outside, he was often busy with household chores associated with these activities which became a leading cause behind his frustration and irritation. Furthermore, his inquisitive mind questioned the activities of rituals and not getting satisfactory answers fueled his skepticism. He never understood the reason behind cultural activities he was compelled to participate in which gradually led to a sense of disconnect.
On the other hand, people used to tease him because of his Newa accent, a struggle that took him considerable time to overcome. Due to these feelings of alienation, he decided to pursue his Masters abroad and applied for a visa to the US. But, to his disappointment, his visa got rejected, although now he feels grateful towards the individual who made that decision. After this event, lockdown began which prevented him from applying for a visa again.
During the initial days of COVID lockdown, Mr Barahi had a close group of friends with whom he used to discuss content creation. However, he gradually felt excluded when his friends began uploading content without him. This started happening regularly and he started thinking if he had done something wrong. This prompted him to confront them but still nothing changed. He felt bad about his friends swaying away but his other friend encouraged him not to dwell on it and instead suggested that he should create his own content independently.
Mr Barahi started uploading content but again to his disappointment, those videos were not performing well. But one day, he decided to create content in the Nepal language. He was doubtful about whether his content would connect with young audiences, given the declining interest in Nepal language. But anyway, he did what he had to do. This time, to his surprise and delight, his videos resonated widely, striking a chord with viewers who found his content both relatable and entertaining.

I wanted to learn the Newari language, but as we lived in a mixed community, my mom did not know how to speak it fluently. She could understand conversations but couldn't reply. My father knows the Newari language, but since we lived in a mixed community, we were not taught it, thinking it was not necessary. There were no Newari classes available for me to learn the language, which made it almost impossible for me to learn it. Now I am abroad, but I am still interested in learning it. If there were an online platform like Duolingo to learn Newari and other languages, it would help preserve these languages.

The experience you shared about gurung community losing our tradition is so sad but true. At the moment about 60% of the members of our community in my opinion is living abroad. The next gen is not even gonna properly learn Nepali language let alone Gurung language. Moreover their own parents dont speak fluently as to teach their kids. Community is slowly losing its authenticity. When a language is lost a part of it is lost. So honestly 16:13 you inspired me to take a step forward and to learn and be fluent at it myself, spread it around the family and show them that it is an important aspect of the heritage. THANK YOU Aashutosh dai. Not only you’re protecting nepal bhasa but inspiring other community to save theirs. If I learn my language, i can be closer to my grandma and pass the language to my coming generation.❤
