It’s good to see kids liking Elvis and knowing what true talent and taste is, and good clean fun. Unfortunately today, there’s much more than just simple music being sold to our youth. I’ve been introducing Elvis to my niece. For our ppl who pray and believe, lift my nieces and nephew up in prayers. It’s not easy being a child and coming up in today’s world. Thank you and God bless. Our Elvis believed in the love and power of prayer as well. Love our Elvis fans all around the world. 💕

Thanks again for a wonderful video. Another poece of Elvis history that would be lost if not for you. A few years back; I bought several books about Elvis early travels called, Did Elvis Sing in Your Hometown, And Roadside Elvis. Has some great Elvis road trips. I would be glad to let you borrow them if you like. A lot of the places he performed in 54, 55 and 56 are long gone. But a lot are still there.

I live near where Elvis played the White River Water Carnival in 1955. It is still there and accessable. I have taken many pics there. According to the book Elvis Day by Day he was quite a controversy and a letter was sent to Col. Parker that his client wasn’t welcome back.

Dear Mr. Stallings, Thank you so much for writing this piece on the Von Theatre and Seth Pounds Auditorium. My late father owned the Von Theater when he booked Elvis there, and Seth Pounds is my late grandfather. My last couple of visits to the site of the Von were a little disheartinig, so I am pleased to see the building renovations completed, and much of the original brick remaining intact. He told me that television had started taking revenue away from his theaters, so he started bringing country and western revues to the theater to keep the theater financially viable. He had the likes of Conway Twitty, Buddy Holly, and obviously Johnny Cash as well as Elvis at the Von. He also had local acts that included Hayden Thompson, Lloyd McCullough, and Everett Clifton and gave them promotional backing. The best story he shared with me, was apparently Buddy Holly arrived in Booneville in less than good shape. My dad took him to his nearby men's clothing store and got him into a suit before he got on stage. Apparently, Buddy Holly skip town without paying for the suit or returning it to my dad, lol! As to one of your questions, I understand that the Elvis, Johnny Cash, David Houston Show got moved from the Von to the Seth Pounds auditorium because of very brisk ticket sales for the triple bill. Elvis did return at a later date as part of the music rotation at the Von. Still doing research on who all recorded music at the Von and I have found 45 size demos that were cut from the aforementioned local artist also known at the Driftin' Hillbillies. I also found in my research that David Houston, who was on the bill with Johnny and Elvis was a Canadian country music singer that went onto win a Grammy award in the country music category. It was truly the start of rockabilly at it's very grass roots, and I am so blessed that my dad was part of the music history in the making. Thank you again for your research, interest, and getting this done. Sincerely, Bill (Buddy) Crawford

That was, again, another interesting look into Elvis' early years. Von's looks to be one of the smallest theatres I've seen. He probably played the larger auditorium first because it was sponsored by the Kiwanis club. A year later, I'm thinking, he's got Colonel Tom helping with the booking. Larger venues may have been too expensive for Parker at the time. IDK - just a hunch. Anyway, thanx again for another fascinating glimpse into the early days. Also - did that radio station look like a mansion back then? That's a nice looking place for such a small town. Take care.

Another great piece of the Elvis puzzle SG. The Headquarters (now) eatery is a cool place it looks like. The Pounds Auditorium is a neat place as well with the radiused entry ways by front door. Still working on the WayBak machine out in the shed here,,When it is functional we'll dial back to 1954 or little earlier and relive this cool stuff.
Hard to imagine how Elvis , along with the rest of the Sun recording artists were really revolutionizing radio music in this era. Found a local Elvis concert advertisement circa 1956 to play at a local Amusement Park/auditorium .The ad at bottom said" The nations only atomic powered singer" :) Thanks again.

Hey bill. What I'm going to say has nothing and about elvis Presley playing in the buildings. Do you know that when vernon and the family left tupelo and moved to Memphis he left some depts so they had to move in the night time. But vernon had planned to come back and pay the debts he had left behind. I think when elvis Presley come back in 55 and 56 elvis paid the debts.

Did you know Vernon wrote a bad check in Tupelo at a local grocery store for food b/c they were hungry and he went back to tell the owner he found some work and would pay him back but the owner pressed charges calling him "white trash" and Vernon was sentence to serve a year in Parchmon prison and released in 9 months due to good behavior? My step mother worked at Parchmon at the time of his arrest.

In 1955 I THINK Scotty was doing the management and bookings(Correct me if Im wrong) and I wonder how Scotty found these places to play their Gigs?
Ive played alot of different sized clubs and venues in my time, so I would guess the acoustics in that odd shaped red brick building with a high ceiling probably werent that good.
I wonder what type of a P.A. system they would have used in those days? I have seen pictures of a few speakers back then and they werent very big. Like at the Tupelo out door concert, he sang through sound HORNS instead of speakers. Hahahah Man they were gritty and over modulated. BUT Elvis still sounded good with his blue velvet shirt on. LOL I guess they didnt even have monitors on stage back then, as in some videos we can see Elvis with his finger in one ear trying to hear his own voice over the sound of the band and screaming fans. :)
That could possibly be some thing old musicians like you & I would find interesting, the types of PA & amps they used back then in a video. (?)
Thank you for all these videos guys, Yall are the best! :) Herb
