My brother in Alberta put me on to your channel. My hubby and I used to live aboard, both out at Sidney and at West Bay Marina. I recall those westerlies in the winter. We were on a big old converted seiner, sitting broadside to the wind. We had quite a few sleepless nights. That wind sounded like a freight train coming toward us. Our most valued installation was our Dickinson diesel heater. So cozy!
12:40 Some off-grid folk use a small propane or butane torch on a pound bottle. Apparently, the flame is hotter and can be directed into the woodpile instead of merely the exterior. . 2003, engineering our ExpeditionVehicle, we insulated massively, with dead-air gaps between layers. We heat using one Wave 3 catalytic heater on 'LOW', and we always open two windows on opposite walls. The escaping warm air carries humidity and odors.
Been such a cold and snowy winter in our area! I got too excited about spring because I saw my bulbs peeking through, and planted a bunch of flowers in my railing boxes, then a foot of snow fell! LOL Surprisingly I think they may have survived!
I wish you guys did a video on how you got into boat life and buying your boat. As young as you guys are it makes me wonder how this all happened. Myself if I could go back in time, I don’t think I would change much. I have lived on the coast of Texas most of my life, never got into sailing or boat life. I would like to now, but money is the problem for me.
I'm having the same issue with my chimney cap. There's a Canadian based company (FAMCO) that sells wind directional and vacuum based chimney caps. You can get a galvanized vacuum based one for $15, stainless is $50.00.
I’ve thought about how the wind blows out west and it’s a lot like eastern Montana, South Dakota, North Dakota and Wyoming where there are no mountains to stop the wind. Where I live there are high mountains that lift the wind so we can live in a pocket of dead air. I don’t like the wind. Living on the coast wind is good because that’s the power of a Sailboat.
00:52 When bad weather is coming, the coffee stock should be full to the lid 😂. Yeah, it’s not the nicest weather to live and work from a yacht. But, it seem to me, you’re dealing with it fine. “Slowing down with this weather”, why not! Spring will come and the energy will come with it! Hibernation on a boat, better than somewhere in a hole underground!
The reality of winter living on the water is pretty harsh. If your trying it in a summer recreational craft it is harsher still. Good luck for the next two months.
I definitely feel for you in these weather conditions, boats are not made for the cold, wind yes, not cold. With winds of that magnitude, the noise through the rigging must really howl. Hopefully things have improved a lot. Take care, be safe and stay warm.
Hey John! Yes they really aren't the best at keeping heat in, but we're finding ways to work around it :) things are starting to warm up which has been a treat! Thanks :D Take care!
I grew up on an island where in autumn and winter we would get big storms (Orkan) and back then even full power outages for days. Although it may sound scary, but making food on propane cookers and sitting in blankets with warm drinks is one of my fondest memories. Also this episode was amazingly long ;) 18:10 min plus 41 minutes in advertising, which I all dutifully "watched". Hope you are feeling fine and the spring comes soon. :D
Yes it really does make for the best memories! Those sound like amazing times to look back on :D oh my goodness, that is a lot of ads! Thank you so much for your support!
When the weather goes rogue, the usual worry is other people's things going awol and paying a thumping visit. On the plus side, when the weather does that, you get new things like it's still Christmas. The secondary worry is running out of coffee, beer, crackers and cheese: that's bad, scary bad.
Aaaww...I was watching your video in a warm room... and felt sorry for you 🙂 It was here in the Netherlands 7 degrees C. and for the first time we had snow this year this is highly unusual so late In the season. TC you two okay? x x
In your cold and isolated situation, you should take your idle time and learn as much about weather. For example, why does the wind blow and why won’t it go away? A good sailor can look at the sky and provide a simple forecast to the next day. Do you have a barometer on the boat? Do you know how to read it. I love playing around with weather.
You do know that avocados grow into trees, right? That is funny. Life on the boat = editing. 🙂 Do you have hazel eyes, you know, they change color pending what you are wearing?
I’m in the market for a new computer and I’m torn between a computer tower or a laptop. I want a tower so I can use the computer through the television and watch movies and such. But then I think about a laptop so I have a computer to use if I’m homeless or traveling. You should look up Mars rovers to see the life on Mars they’ve found. We know now that there’s life on Mars but the question is, what do these Martians eat?
I allow the commercials to run while I read the comments. Today's video took nearly an hour with commercials. . I realize you have a lot to share... could this be three videos of six minutes each?
They're pretty young, and largely self taught. You can hardly blame them for being cautious. There are a couple of videos posted recently by highly experienced sailors coming into Victoria Harbor who wished they'd waited a day or so for better weather. From what I've seen the Blue Moon folks are pretty calm under stress.

Here's a tip. Put a little bit of vegetable oil on the paper when using it for kindling. The oiled paper burns for a lot longer then dry paper.
Hey Mark, thanks for the tip! I completely forgot about that and will have to try it!
Thank you so much for letting us see a peek in to the amazing life and area you both live and live in.
Corn chips make a great fire starter. Plus they're delicious.
The coffee making edits on the videos are brilliant!

I'm giving u a hug from cold and snowy Minnesota! Smile!
You vicariously help me relive my wife and my younger days. Thank you so much!
What a winter we all are having.
Yes it's definitely been a weird one!
Hunker down as Steve W would say

I guess that's where the expression "snug berth" comes from. I'm glad you were not out in a bay somewhere worrying about the anchor dragging.
Yes we are so glad that we can safely moore at a dock during these storms!

You've had a rough winter it's spring down here in Alabama..we have not had much of a winter...we never do...
Blown the Dogs off the leaches...great to be on a boat that is toasty warm with the wind Howlin thru the Hallards.

Would a diesel heater be able to keep up with the cold up there? I got one for my Pearson 30 but haven't put it in yet
