Fender '57 Custom Champ (Tiny amp HUGE sound)

- Hi, and thanks for watching this video.
Im trying to give you an idea what the Champ can sound like. I bought this amp not knowing what I had got myself into. At first I was pretty underwhelmed by the sound of the amp it self, I had no experience with an 8" speaker, and I immediately wanted it to sound larger than was physically possible with such a tiny cab and speaker. But when I got around to record it, I started to really appreciate what this amp (for me) is all about. It's a perfect studio tool for someone who wants great vintage class A tube sounds, and I do think this demo shows that it's perfectly capable of doing modern sounds, especially with a few effects. This will be a part of my mainstable and homestudio for years to come. It's easily serviced, you can run it though a bigger cab, it doesn't blow up your neighbors ears when used and recored at low levels. Dave Cobb, a highly praised Nashville producer swears by the Champ, using it with the volume at 3. It's not a budget friendly amp for sure, but if you can find one used, and this amp is your style, I wouldn't hold back.

Thanks for helping inspire me to invest in one of these. Something so special about them. After years of not spending any money of instruments i recently got the Chris Stapleton Princeton, and I'll be combining it with the champ via my new UA stereo delay and reverb. I usually give myself a hard time about spending money on these things but I feel nothing but happiness. Writing and playing music is so important to me and I feel like I showed that part of myself the respect it deserves. Even though I'm the only one that hears my stuff Im glad I treated myself to this after all these years. The issues with supply over here in Australia recently helped make it happen too. Felt like if I don't get them now I might never do it. Thanks again. 👍
Magic music again Chris. So beautiful. You have a unique sound.
I really appreciate your kindness Bill. Thank you
Absolute artwork!! Nothing better...
Beautiful demo music and helping decide on getting this jewel.
Love it!! I have one, might just be my favorite amp.
My fav amp by far. 🖤 mine. Enjoy yours Chris!
This came up on my feed, and, wow, what a sound you have! I like it a lot. Nice.
Thanks brother
Hello I have one and everything you say is true bro lovely playing
Found you thru the Eastman DC junior video - great videos. You have a great feel 🎸
Thank you Simon, Sincerely 🙏
great video man
Thank you very much Ahmet
Nice sounds 🎶👌
Thanks man
Hello some people laugh at the price of these amps. But when you get it home and you get to know it you wount let it go
Exactly, it’s easily mistaken for something it is not meant to be
Tweed tolex really catches the eye!
It looks like nothing else. Love the look too!
Great video. After a lot of study, comparison and deliberation, I just got mine (for practice, recording, small gigs). I absolutely LOVE the tone! But… there’s a low hum that is always there. Does yours have that?
Thanks man! Yeah there was an inherent idle hum noise in mine as well, but not loud enough to really annoy me.
Excellence
Thank you very much
I have a waza delay before a flint as well🙂 I really love this little amp. I don’t know that I will ever be able to afford one though lol Have you played p-90’s through it?
Those two pedals are just wonderful. They are mainstays on my board for sure. Simple and effective. I ended up selling this little Champ. Great sounding and looking amp, but I didn’t use it all that much. I did try p90’s with it, Lollars in a full hollow ES style guitar. The neck pickup could get a little woofey, but the bridge pickup sounds immense!
Would you recommend The Champ for a low volume home amp (basement) if I were to get pedals? Or do pedals defeat the purpose? Would I be better off with a lower cost amp like the Blues Jr with pedals? Is a tube amp just the wrong solution for low volume playing?
Hi Paul
Thanks for your comment.
The champ sounds great when recorded. It’s a classic, it’s looks apart, but in my experience I don’t get satisfied playing it all by itself. And even a 5 watt tube amp is loud. In all seriousness, my favorite do it all amp is the Fender tonemaster deluxe. It’s got the attenuator, it’s light, takes pedals really well, can run directly into your audio interface for even lower volume playing. I mean, it’s such a great piece of gear - and especially after fender released the firmware to bypass the bright cap. That’d be my recommendation.
Thanks for the feedback.
Please read the description for a more detailed insight. Take care
Fantastic sound and very artistic playing! Hope you do many more such videos.
I purchased the 57 Custom Champ after several years of curiosity and wondering how such a simple little amp could possibly be worth what it costs. Well.....it is worth every cent to me - so inspiring and satisfying to play. I play mostly clean/edge of breakup with single coils and just a reverb pedal. Surprisingly big full sound and incredibly touch sensitive.
Hi,
How is the champ for home / bedroom level use?
Thanks in advance.
Greetings
Nic
Hi Niko
It’s great if you want just the clean tone . If you want tube breakup it’s way way to loud for bedroom levels. I live in an apartment, and with the volume at 3 I could record great clean tones at a non disturbing level.
@@ChrisEffort thx for the reply
How is the clean tone btw?
@@nikolaubtopou If you mean the clean tone it self just for practicing and not recording? - it’s good, but a little restricted since it’s just that 8 inch speaker. I personally wouldn’t buy it just for bedroom level playing. But it all depends on your needs. Without any pedals on low volume it can be a pretty dry experience for some people.
@@ChrisEffort thx for your reply
Precious info
Lovely playing, jumped to this after watching your J Mascis video! Earnt a subscribe frome me!
Thank you John, means a lot!
I have one but I think my tweed pro jr is just as good
I’d would probably find the pro junior much more useful too. I just got a Super Champ X2, and that amp has exceeded all my expectations, blown away tbh.
