Brilliant. Thought provoking. I used to repair fairly complicated mechanisms, so thought a clock would be easy to repair, didn't go well, but I will persevere.

Richard, I have been a practicing artist for 48 years. All of what you have just said rings true. But I also must say longevity is 9/10ths of the battle. Your story is extraordinary…good on you!
Great advice Richard. My Grandfather was a Watchmaker, still repairing Clocks and Watches well into his 80's. I'm 66 now and only recently took an interest, should have shown more interest when I had the chance.
I am 70 years old with one good eye. I have always loved quality mechanical watches. I decided this year to have a go at taking old movements apart and rebuilding. There is so much to learn and it is a very satisfying and relaxing thing to do.

@@richardperrettwatchmaker Not me, I was born in 92. but we did same thing, bothering UNPROFOR soldiers for bonbons and chocolate, sometime during 95.,96.,97...cos as I remember soldiers were there still couple of years after war. I lived in village near to dam by the Rama lake, unprofor vehicle would come with two soldiers and they would just stand there for hours, sometimes trying to communicate with me and my friends, crazy times but I have good memories beacuse I was child....Anyway I like your channel, great content! I like vintage watches, hope I will menage to buy some vintage Rolex in near future. Daniel
Being good at what you do, be it at individual or corporate level, seems harder to find these days. Some of the latest overcomplicated and unreliable German cars are an example of businesses getting lost on this journey. Short sighted management often only focus on cost reduction. Great video Richard - Obviously most people who watch your channel are interested in watches (my latest passion is design and DIY). Your videos are also calming and theraputic . . . The ideas are great . . . So why don't more people do this . . . Teach yourself something, sell the service 1) Paying the mortgauge 2) Would like to preserve their personal dream - not put it to the test - will not fail . . . 3) Courage to step out and do something new . . . . . . this is realy a big challenge (they need lots of courage) 4) Depends whether the person is content doing a routine work 5) Creative people struggle to stay in a process orientated job . . . (creative people NEED to use their skills) 6) Usually the new venture involves being proficient across a broader range of skills and possible industries 7) The existing systems will try to manage your business within their framework - lots of marketing needed. 8) Would help if you are a second generation person in your skill - parents provided lots of background insight Was it worth the struggle and challenges -- yes absolutely 🙂🙂

Somepeople become very wealthy . . . my thoughts so far 1) It is difficult entering a market selling very expensive products to wealthy clients 2) Examples -- private builders providing luxury homes, unique sculptures (e.g. Henry Moore) and contemporary art (Banksy). 3) There are RUclips channels with approximately - 1.5 million subscribers e.g. *Itchy Boots* Dedication - would you be happy sitting on a motorbike - with the engine switched off - with 3 male lions approx 60 feet away?

I’ve spent many years in auto racing and have friends who have won a Daytona (or two) and have been allowed to wear one from time to time at a track and there is a difference in that watch from others. I’m still a Heuer collector and love the brand and maybe some day I’ll get a Sub… someday😊 Enjoyed the video and thanks for posting.
If I were the head of education in the UK, I would have gardening as a chief subject in primary and junior schools. It would put minds in the slow and patient process of nature. Then it would be this kind of activity - watchmaking for example - at more senior levels

Make what do in your own unique personal way, kind of "the Rolex way". Even if ultimatively maybe nothing what you do is that special, others do that too. But only Rolex can do things the Rolex-way. not everyone can afford a rolex, but we all can afford a good watch. I feel that rolex are blown out of proportion, the people I see wearing rolex are people who cannot afford them (got a loan) just look around at the money people and they are not (for the most part) wearing a high dollar watch, even the people who can afford them. I have an atomic watch that is more accurate than ANY rolex and not breaking the bank. my thoughts are that it is for the prestige of saying, It's a Rolex. save your money for what is more important things in life, just living comfortably for an example

10:24 Ouch I felt that having mangled the balance spring (and probably the balance shaft) of my early 1940s Ingersoll Mickey Mouse watch!! 😭😭😭 It was extremely inaccurate before but at least it was working. It will never run again due to my cackhandedness 😭😭😭
I only found out the other week that 90% of Rolex profit goes to charity .Changed my mind about their tactics for keeping demand and price at the absolute peak.
Since Rolex never disclose that information because as a charity they don't have to and no company could survive if they gave away that much of their profits. Sounds like more Rolex BS.

After a while I was so fed up with those remarks I sold the damned watch and bought a Grand Seiko. Problem solved. Now, who's ridiculous ?
There is a body of evidence to say that Rolex Marketing is shooting itself in the foot with the endless persuit of exclusivity. Technically, there is a view that Omega are better watches but Rolex has made a policy of marketing to secure the brand image. This is now resulting in a vacuum in the supply which is being filled by the replica makers. There are now replicas that test even a Rolex expert. Once people can't tell a fake from real without a loop and disassembly, more and more will buy a replica if they are refused, in a Rolex dealer's shop, when trying to purchase the real thing.... 😕
Rolex is seen everywhere and that irritates me.Also the high price.I own a Tudor Black Bay GMT and a Seiko Blue Monster.Both are much cheaper than Rolex,but every bit as good
The posers with no taste decided Rolex was the watch to be seen it. Most decided on a diving watch. Everyone knows about the vast numbers of new divers . What they are diving into is open to speculation!
I'm never a fan of the overrated brand in any category. Be it Rolex, Apple, Glock, or Toyota, the fanboy cults that overhype the products and make them out to be more than they are always steer me away.

Good message, well told. As a practicing picky old git, might I refer you to two spelling errors in Habit #7 at 21:50, namely a missing "r" in Nurturing, and a missing "n" in Romantic. There might be some others I missed. 😉

In mitigation I was probably working on it at 2 am as I am the watchmaker, the film maker, the editor, the marketing guy and everything else ... I often drop the odd ball but always keep moving forward. But the spelling in this one was spectacularly bad! Richard

I'm never a fan of the overrated brand in any category. Be it Rolex, Apple, Glock, or Toyota, the fanboy cults that overhype the products and make them out to be more than they are always steer me away.

(B)olex. a famous 16mm camera maker
(S)olex. a well known little french motor bike and a famous german carburettor

As a practicing picky old git, might I refer you to two spelling errors in Habit #7 at 21:50, namely a missing "r" in Nurturing, and a missing "n" in Romantic. There might be some others I missed. 😉
Hi Russell ... You are so right to pick me up on the grammar in this video. It's rubbish! In mitigation I was probably working on it at 2 am as I am the watchmaker, the film maker, the editor, the marketing guy and everything else ... I often drop the odd ball but always keep moving forward. But the spelling in this one was spectacularly bad! Richard

On another note, I worked with some former British Army retirees on a large construction project, and was impressed with the programmes for transitioning servicemen to alternative civilian occupations. The lads were top notch, to a man.
